How to beat Pokemon Yellow in

This is a tutorial on a bizarre and mind boggling glitch that allows you to complete Pokemon Yellow with an in-game clock of 0:00. Even with the glitch, this does need to be performed quite quickly or else you will end up with a 0:01, 0:02, etc. Additionally, this glitch has you complete the game with a completed Pokedex, how's that for awesome?
I am not the founder of this glitch, and take no credit for finding it. However, as hard as I looked online I could not find a video or text guide that clearly laid out how to perform this glitch, so I decided to make a tutorial myself after figuring out how to do it.

Debugging :D Emulators, a memory-watch-window and knowledge of what the hell you're doing is the way to go :D You can basically "reprogram" any game by shutting the gameboy down during the save-process, but there's a pretty high chance you just corrupt your save-file. Thank god the game's code is stored in read-only-memory :D

yep, if someone looks at the code (or reverse engineers it) they can see which actions provoke which bug. It's still hard as fuck because you have to go through it in your head, but not nearly as hard as trying out random things to see if something glitches :D

The reason you can access the broken Pokemon Menu is this: When you have no save file, the entire save file is written with blank data. The entire section with Pokemon Data is filled with FF (used as -1, NULL or 255). When you're interrupting the save like this, you save that you "have pokemon" because it overwrites part of the blank data, but not all of it. Data strangely gets re-arranged when saving and this process doesn't get finished. So there are space for 6 pokemon in memory, but there's some space after that for nicknames. (This is why Pokemon slots 7-9 still work as well: They have data like your rival's nickname as well too which is why your rival's name changes). Pokemon number 10 has info about how many items you have. The Item Data has space for 20 items. Scrolling past that references other data, things like which map you're on, where and what events are loaded, wild pokemon encounters and other things. Swapping them around allows you to change what does what. Basically, you change the current map to the Hall Of Fame, so when you go out the door, it attempts to reload the 'current map' since the Hall Of Fame doesn't have any exit points. There's another method where you can trigger the Hall Of Fame cutscene without even going downstairs but I can't figure out how it works. It does something very similar though, changing the current map but it also writes the event required in as well somewhere.

Also, the reason the hall of fame is accessed anyways, is that those items were corrupted and they were counted as map values, and if you add the Master ball value with 68 escape ropes, there's the Hall of Fame. Of course, all of these are assumptions, but I'm taking an educated guess.

GamingLink Having more items than you're meant to have means you're editing RAM values that you're not supposed to change, such as the "Current Map ID". Change it to the Hall of Fame and walk through a door to beat the game.

So one day, someone just said, 'Hey! Let's delete our file, start a new game, choose ash as our name and blue as our partner walk down to 1 tile below the left bottom corner of the table and click save and after the save menu closes and just before the text changes we switch off the game and right after that go into our pokemon menu and move a pokemon from the slot 1-9 and swap it with slot 10, after that take a pokemon from slot 11 and swap it with slot 9 and then exit the pokemon menu going to the items menu and holding a key down till the arrow turns solid and then press A, afterwards we press down+a twice and then grab the randomly named item below the master ball and then swap it with the masterball and then selecting the item toss 68 of it, then exiting the menu we are for some reason in the hall of fame.'

What usually happens is people's batteries die at that exact save moment, and when they see the corruption, they press random buttons. Or, they use ROM dumps to find the correct memory addresses they need to change.

If u use an editor to look at the code, the only thing u'll ever see are 1's & 0's, meaning that u have to sit for days looking at the code, following all the steps, and decoding all the bits as u scroll down/up following the jumps/calls on the code. If the games are exceedingly popular, some glitches are found by chance, and many attempts to replicate them ensue. Good old trial and error. In the more extreme cases, it's usually reverse-engineering. Understand the code, find possible bugs and unwanted behavior, and start getting mathematical. (Check out "How to beat Dire Dire Docks in 0.5 A botton presses", which takes this to its hilarious and fascinating extreme.) Usually, it's a combination of both.

+Shieldlesscap The default names "Ash" and "Blue" are technically not needed at all. It's just fast to pick the default names rather than entering a new name. Additionally, you don't even have to swap the random item (which actually depends on your Trainer ID byte 2; D359) into where the second Master Ball (item 36) is. This just makes completing the game quicker, because the quantity of that random item (which is supposed to read the index number of the music - Pallet Town) would be BA (dec:186) instead of 0 (dec:256). The quantity of the Master Ball item (item 36) reads your exit warp location, and if it's 118 (hex:76), going through the exit will take you to the Hall of Fame. Scykoh had to toss 68 of the item because 186-118 is 68. If you didn't swap the random item into the place of the Master Ball, then you could just toss 138, because 256-138=118 (hex:76).

Perhaps you have 152 pokemon from the start of the game, but the counter resets, since it's one higher than the intended maximum, this being done to prevent Prof. Oak from giving his soft-locking Dex Entries count before you even have a starter, and due to a lack of a 0 variable. Don't ask me, I could be way off and this is just me guessing.

Basically, you're changing the variables in the game code to somehow spit you out at the victory hall, and the people who discovered this knew of these variables (they most likely had a plug-in or some emulator add-on to see the values of them) and using knowledge of coding and programming to do it, needless to say they didn't press random buttons :p

+Daniel Thirion I don't think that is true. The glitch works by editing the RAM. I don't believe Pokemon ever executes code from the RAM. You can't edit the ROM, which has the code. Unless you can somehow trick the ROM to jump to a RAM address (if that's even technically possible the way the Gameboy is wired up), you cannot execute arbitrary code. Only code that's already in the game's ROM. As far as my understanding goes, this glitch does not require arbitrary code execution. You only have to overwrite the location from which you entered the building in the RAM. Then upon leaving the building, the game will jump back to that location. So you're editing the game's *state*, but not the game's code.

While I'm not one of these people (I'm maybe SLIGHTLY less lost than you are...maybe), I think it's less a matter of dicking around with your game until you find this out and more about knowing programming. Since what makes this work has to do with the game identifying everything with HEX codes (which is also partially the reason Misingno works like it does), I feel like people just figure out some bugs (like the menu thing here) and understand how to exploit that based on the game's hardware. Or something. I hope that made more sense than I'm afraid it did.

CasaiAgicap In other words it's hacking the game through glitching. Not the same as hacking the game with an external device, but I mean... If he actually beat Gary (fairly) then this would've been more legit. But even then, one might argue that you still broke the Pokemon League rules by not beating all 8 gym leaders and all of the elite 4 members, therefore you're disqualified and it doesn't count.

satan915 I prefer to more interpret it as "exploiting" than hacking; hacking tends to imply that external aspect to it (IE, using a GameShark), whereas this is all just a flaw in the game's coding. Would you argue that Misingno is found from hacking? That said, sure, in-game Professor Oak should certainly wonder how the kid who lived in the same town as him not ten seconds ago is suddenly the champion. A real rags to riches story, that one.

Which includes the amount of Pokémon in your party. *I don't play too much Pokémon, so past this point, I might get things wrong, but this is what seems to happen.* But, the game only has 6 places to keep Pokemon, so it overlaps with other data values, which once you go into your inventory, lets you change the bit which stores the room you are in.

Thanks for the video! I'm a pretty big fan of Pokemon. Today's my birthday, and I got this game and a Gameboy Light (that Japan exclusive Gameboy with a backlight), so I tried it on the the game, playing it on my new Light, since it's region free. It took a lot of tries to succeed. Oddly enough, I only failed on two of my attempts by not turning my Light off at the right time. Of course I got one if the wrong results from turning your game on, but something odd that happened was that when I scrolled down on the items, it brought up these weird shape things, and when I selected one of them, my game crashed. Another time, this time when I succeeded at that part, I almost got to where you had to toss the item, but it was too important to toss.

For everyone that's still confused, the glitch that is done in this video is called a Wrong Warp. By restarting the game right before saving, we confuse the game, allowing us to manipulate it into sending us to the Hall Of Fame. When you're at the point where you have to toss exactly 68 items, it tells the game that the exit leads to the Hall Of Fame, so you just have to leave your house, and you've already beaten the game.
