I would recommend reading the manga after watching this. It will give you more information, more characters and a badass lady. There are other plots and everything will somewhat make sense. The plot also gets darker and more complicated.

The animation is top notch and the plot is extraordinary but it falls flat in establishing characters. The only 3 dimensional character is Tetsuo. Kaneda is your typical anime protagonist. The supporting characters are also one dimensional. The story also doesn't explain anything. It also doesn't give you the satisfactory answer to why Kaneda cares so much about Tetsuo. But, I will agree it is a visual masterpiece.

Yes. Technically, both Kaneda and Tetsuo are both the protagonist to this story. However, Tetsuo becoming hungry for more powerful psychic abilities is what turned him into an antagonist by the end of the film. That and we never really "see" Akira. We just hear about his uncontrollable psychic abilities through past tense. This video doesn't really dive deep into the backstory of the psychic children. In a flashback, we are shown that the children were experimental research test subjects on the limits of the human brain and psychic powers that the government hoped to use as a weapon. After the incident with Akira, the project was shut down.
