Screenwriter thought the kid with asthma/night terrors/epilepsy/diabetes/autism trope was enough and decided to throw in "cannot function without (material item)" just to keep things fresh for a moment. Someone with "separation anxiety" really wouldn't let a personal item out of sight. It's an easy fix but kids seemingly take the reigns in some families while parents exacerbate the condition with enabling behavior.

I listened to the audio while driving, and without even the visuals, I felt frustrated hearing all the mistakes being made. Like, I totally understand the need for a special stuffed animal and stuff as the parent of a special needs child...but if I felt my family was in genuine danger, it would have to be a sacrifice. Like, sure it would suck having my kid scream like in the Babadook all the way home, but it was foolish to go back. It was foolish to go on the roof for it later as well, or be led into the shed after the tire was flat. Hell, as sad as it would have been...I'd have to have kept going after the kid was thrown in the pond. Like, with all the other weirdness, there's no way to know if he really couldn't swim. Even though he tried to warn the family, that could have even been part of seeing how far they could go with their victims. Nightmares for the rest of my life would be a fine price to pay to not see my family tortured or killed.
