This is my theory: There was no “evil” their mom was just crazy. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing supernatural going on. I think their mom’s spirit lingered in the house, following her death and latched onto her favorite son. After all almost everything happening after her death could be explained away by saying the older kid is just going crazy as well, but she can’t really fake the picture.

It’s kinda a little confusing at first like it seems like the mom has sort of mental illness but I think with most woods being extremely haunted so when they said their grandfather built the house probably for some reason and he thought the location was nice it was only later did they discover the hard way that the place is haunted and it messed with their heads and so they believed they were the only ones left But that now begs the question who is their father exactly if they haven’t had contact with the real world in decades then would that be her brother When the hiker showed up we start to see it wasn’t in the mom’s head it’s just some haunted woods and unfortunately after the hiker died his daughter was left alone and was possessed Oh and the reason why the dog wasn’t affected was because most animals can’t be
