The Steinitz defense is the response I see most often while dabbling in the Ruy Lopez at my level

Oh, interesting. If you don't mind me asking, what level is that? I would assume that lower levels would face this opening more often -- and it is certainly not the most testing defense from black, and white can get very pleasant positions.

thanks for the ruy lopez series, i have studied a bunch of chessable courses, but you still have some interesting options for both sides included ;)

Oh nice! I am sure especially the bigger chessable courses would be deeper than this video, but I do try my best to be complete and give a whole rep!

I have been avoiding using the Ruy Lopez, but thanks to you, I'm excited to deepen my understanding of the Ruy Lopez and finally be able to use it in practice! Thank you so much!😆

Man, I played these types of english attack openings against Sicilian and Pirc for so long... If only I knew earlier I could do that against the Old Steinitz defense as well lol. Thanks for the video

Im curious if youll address the Open Ruy with 4. Nxe4, i know the main main lines are complicated but the Open Ruy Lopez is something im nervous of facing, its weird and complicated for white, and maybe a way to avoid the Berlin endgame

Check out the introduction video to see what lines I will explore and why. (Against Nf6 I am actually playing quick d3-based setups, avoiding mainline, but still getting typical Ruy Lopez positions!

@@ChessGeek1 I think it's nice you focused on sidelines but there's actually one more kinda respectable one I think it's called the Lucena variation with the immediate 3. Be7, so I thought that was interesting because I play that myself as black. The engine itself according to lichess doesn't think it's horrible either with +0.4-0.5

The only problem with d4 is they have the potential to pin the knight which I know isnt a big deal but I still play h3 which I’m worried at higher levels may be a wasted move.
