Training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy enabled me to beat my flying phobia. Understanding exactly how flying phobia works was they key to beating it. In this video I explain why you have such a fear of flying and what you can do to reduce and eliminate that fear so that you can prevent a panic attack when you fly.

Folks try to reassure the panic struck person that flying is safe. This does not work because the panic is not being fueled by probability but by possibility: in other words, is it probable that the door will fly off the plane as recently happened? No but it is possible proven by the fact that it DID happen. So acknowledging that the thinngs that scare folks about flying have indeed happened is an important step because if one just talks about probability being low, the panicked person will not be able to ingest that. I know because many have tried this on me and it makes me more upset that they can not understand why I am scared/panicked.

Same here. I do not give a FUCK about statistics! You can tell me all day driving is more dangerous but I won’t fall 30k feet out of the air if I crash in my car! I am extremely afraid of dying but I’m even more scared of skydiving until I go splat, I hate heights and the feeling of my stomach dropping.

My hesitation for flying is the thought of having a panic attack and being “stuck” on the plane. I used to travel quite a bit for work. But when I started having panic attacks the thought of having one on a plane has prevented me from going on trips. How can I desensitize in my case? Since in my situation, I am not worried about things like what you pointed out but rather just having a panic attack while in flight. And thank you for your wonderful videos!! I have watched several already…very informative, helpful and well made! Watching the drawings is satisfying 😊.

Hi Claudia. What you are describing sounds like panic disorder rather than a flying phobia so its is treated differently and takes a lot longer to overcome. My series on panic attacks will teach you how to overcome the fear of panic attacks. When you no longer fear the panic attack you will find that you can fly again but its not easy. Phobias can be overcome in just a few weeks but anxiety disorders like panic disorder take anywhere between a few months to many years depending on the severity and how long you have had it.

Thank you for sharing! I love flying in the past UNTILL… One day, on a plane from San Francisco to Japan. It was a long flight and I almost couldn’t make it. Luckily I flew with my 7 yrs old son who turned into a life saver for the flight. He told me that it will be ok mom, and tomorrow will be even better. I couldn’t believe how sweet words could help comfort me to our final destination. However, back to the San Francisco while we were at ours seat. I suddenly feel afraid to fly I couldn’t breathe well. I felt terrified that I may have to go back to the gate with my son. Then, I told the gentleman next to me that I’m not feeling well and could not breathe. He said “ OK “ then he went back to sleep. I told myself I have to make it because it’s about me not something else. It was hard but I made it. I finally found that I have claustrophobic. I afraid to be in a place that I feel trapped. Its happened in my bedroom, car, Car wash places, long tunnel, Trains, MRI. Yes, I still flying from time to time and I have prepared before flying. I will hop on board again this summer! I knew how people who have been through this fear and it wasn’t easy to get through. 💐💐💐

While I've caught myself doing some of the behaviours, I've taught myself not to. But my main problem when flying is the sensation. I hate when the plane is taking off, I hate when the thrust is cut in half after the first part of the descent, I hate when the plane turns and like most people I hate turbulence. All of these things make me feel dizzy, like I might pass out. I get this in buses and cars too but without feeling panicky). I've read how planes work and have friends who are avgeeks (two have degrees in aeronautical engineering) and despite understanding it all and rationalising it all (and feeling calm in my own head), my body still freaks out every time. I feel like I have no control over it. The plane bumps and I hear myself gasp or curse or like I'm about to have a wobbly. I'm flying in a few hours and I'm so stressed out.

Takeoff is the worst for me. I fear that the plane won't be able to lift properly. I usually close my eyes and feel like I'm going to die. I prefer the landings, because those mean that I'll soon be able to leave the plane. But even then I'm a bit frightened. I may look out through the window, see that the ground is really close and think that the plane will miss the runway. Before the flights I usually drink or take a pill to fight the panic. One time, I drank about 5-6 beers and felt quite relaxed, but another time the beer just made me panic more.
@sussydogelikesplanes
@sussydogelikesplanes 3 ай бұрын
planes dont do that. planes on their first certified flight, have their tanks fully filled and payload set up to the maximum weight. the point of positive rate (lifting off the ground) is then put as the runway requirement. a plane is not legally allowed to fly a runway too short for it to take off from. most airports have extra area for planes in the VERY unlikely chance that they do overrun, and this is also shown in the recent tui overrun at leeds bradford airport. hope this helps ❤

The last time I flew was nearly 40 yrs ago. I had flown many times internationally as a child till older teenager with my mom and sister to visit my maternal relatives in Germany every summer. I hated flying as a kid and got my butt beat onto all 3 flights there and all 3 coming back. I would cry and carry on the entire summer dreading the fact that we had to fly back. My last flight was returning to Chicago from Phoenix. There was a problem shortly after take off with the plane and it was terrifying, we had to make an emergency landing in Denver and get on another plane. ABSOLUTELY no way in hell would I do it. I demanded a refund, rented a car and drove back to Chicago. I haven't flown since. The problem is that my relatives in Germany want to see me, in Germany, so badly. Some of them have visited here a few times and my cousin's son visited us twice this past year while he was in the US for work. He extended his trip just to see us. He and his mother especially, she's the cousin I was closest to growing up, want me to visit so badly. I've agreed to do it but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if at the last minute I just won't do it. Even though it would be a huge financial waste to me I'd figure the ticket cost the same whether I use it or not once it's bought. Or if I actually got on the plane I'd probably get kicked off before take off bc I just know I'll have a massive anxiety attack and act like a psycho. I hate even seeing planes in the sky. I worry about random flights, flights my adult kids are on and flight in general. Intellectually I know that it's safer than driving and all those things BUT in a lifetime of driving all over the country I've never been in an accident, never gotten a ticket, never had any issue, AND I'm at least somewhat in control. I think of random stuff like I wonder how many people on the 9/11 planes, or any planes that have ever crashed, were terrified fliers who finally got on a plane and then came to a catastrophic end. I think about those minutes when you'd know you're going to die in a terrible way and can do nothing to stop it and wished you'd never gotten on the plane. There's just no way I'm going to be able to do it. Mainly because there's not a single thought important enough to make me feel like it's worth it. I wish i could get over this overwhelming fear, but i just don't see how. My husband is very understanding and doesn't think I'm stupid. He says he won't try and talk me into it although he'd really love to go. He wants to see where i spent all my childhood summers and meet all my relatives that haven't visited. I want to do it for him, but i don't know if i can.

@mateo10734 if it wasn't crazy expensive and time consuming I'd consider doing that. But at the end of the day I've been to see my relatives many times and thanks to technology I'm in contact with them regularly. They can come here anytime, we have plenty of space to accommodate them. But sure if money and time aren't any issue you should totally do it! Thank you for commenting, at least I know there's someone else that gets it!!!

@Ellen-85 I'm sure any normal person walking onto a plane has had that fear of flying at some point. Let me tell you now, get that first flight out of the way and you will be hooked. Take off just blows your mind it's so cool the speed you get and watching through the window as it goes up. During a flight you may experience some slight drops or bumps but it is completely normal. Remember knowledge is power, do your research and see that it is the safest form of travel. The aircraft is designed to withstand many kinds of turbulence. As for fear of being in an enclosed space chat to someone on board, read a book, listen to podcasts, all tips you can use to focus your brain somewhere else. Just tell yourself it's a nit a journey that will last forever, even if you only experience this once make a short flight so you don't regret it.

Do you feel the same claustrophobia when on a coach, underground train or bus? I am also scared of flying too even though I have flown a few dozen times before. I have been worried each time..Not because of flying but because if turbulence and the lack of surface to ride on, be it land or sea. Plus with train and ferries, at least there are evacuation measures if something was to go wrong (lifeboats, coastguards, and the firebregade and emergency services for trains and coaches on land. But which service can save you at 30,000 feet? That is what scares me

This might be the weirdest one you hear or read about in terms of how I developed my phobia. I used to be perfectly fine on planes considering I love roller coasters and I’m not scared of heights whatsoever. However one day on a flight I was looking out the window and a guy behind me was snoring super loud and at a fast pace and my brain completely tricked me into breathing at his rhythm and it was so freaky and unnatural I panicked right away and couldn’t control my breathing. I wasn’t breathing naturally but manually thinking I had to control it otherwise I’d run out of air. Ever since I’ve been super anxious on flights and I don’t go to the bathroom drink or eat on a plane cause I’m afraid I’ll choke. 😊

I check off all the boxes and then some for fear of flying. I haven't flown in 30 yrs, the last time I flew i didn't enjoy the visit at all I was asking the woman next to me the time every 5 mins, to where she literally gave me her watch to use. I rented a car back. It doesn't help that a friend back in the day was a maintenance mechanic at O'hare, who told me that if i new the "mechanicals" that happened with planes I wouldn't want to fly. i got details. I can't do heights, plane noises, the feeling of falling as the plane descends. i'm ok if i'm connected to the ground. I just finished up a long career I purposely chose that didn't involve any travel. My sister works for an airline and it is of no help. I would never fly in the winter due to the deicing problems i see. My reference may be framed by crashes in my formative years in the 80s. Nevertheless, i did see a "counselor" who was of no help and i didn't even pay the bill. My excuse has been i live in florida, i don't need to go anywhere. Now that i have more time and married an asian, i wouldn't mind travelling, have been looking into amtrak, but i know this is limited and it ain't cheap. and amtrak doesn't go to asia. So we're looking at cruises. i'm get really insecure and depressed when i think about it, so i just block it out. I don't care what/who the pilot is. Mentally I can probably handle an hour tops, but there are few that are that short. I don't know what to do with this, and most of these videos don't help at all. Air travel does seem safer now, but still. I'm willing to try baby steps.

I made this video 3 years ago and it got very few views so I didn't make any more but recently it has taken off so I may do another one. Maybe an hypnosis video because that is good for phobias. But the best advice I can give is be very aware of the safety behaviours that I mention in the video. Its difficult, but try not to give in to them because they put the mind into a high state of alert that can trigger a panic attack and a flood of catastrophic thoughts that are totally irrational but very believable when in the panic state. (I was so convinced we were being hijacked). If the panic comes, just accept it and remind yourself that the thoughts are just thoughts. They are not facts. So don't seek reassurance that the plane isn't going to crash. Just try to accept them and let the thoughts pass. Its hard but if you can let them pass the anxiety will come down much quicker. The weeks before the flight are crucial. Try to stay off google as it fuels the phobia. I know its really hard not to give in to these behaviours as I used to do it myself but if you can just reduce your safety behaviours by 25%, the next flight will be just a little bit easier. Then reduce them more and more with each flight. When the safety behaviours are gone the phobia will be gone also and you will be able to sleep on a flight just like me. The good news is that phobias are completely reversible but it takes a lot of will power at first.
@ac-uh5lo

@@TheAnxietyAttic This was so motivating :') And actually not a lot of people make the link of staying away from the behaviors you seek for reassurance e.g. googling flying safety stats etc. Some people almost encourage it by suggesting you can research into why planes are safe etc. But actually, so far that's not worked for me. I do that more than ever and I am more scared then ever. So I will try your way. I won't Google anything. My flight is on the 18th. I will avert my eyes from looking at the wings and engine etc when I'm on the flight. I will try to ignore the flight attendants (because I hyper focus on them normally).

I laughed when 737 popped up😂 that’s the exact reason why I’m Terrified of flying. I’m a QC engineer and know the corners that people cut. It’ll be blind drunk for me before my flight tomorrow 😬

These are all reasons except one reason that I have is what It just falls out of the air like a ball of something and I’m also worried about the take off feeling

It's not possible for an aircraft to just "fall out of the air" the wings and engines help you stay afloat, if worst case scenario, let's say both engines fail the plane is just going to keep flying. The wings create lift. The takeoff feeling on the other hand, yeah me too I hate it. But it's actually just your mind playing tricks on you, it might feel like you're falling for a split second or two but in reality you're climbing up into the air as fast as you originally were before you felt that feeling.

My panic attacks are caused by not being allowed to go to the bathroom, like at times on a plane. And of course panic attacks can cause diarrhea, and the diarrhea can cause panic attacks. Never had this problem when I was young.

I’m sorry but I didn’t find this video nor the tips mentioned so useful. I’ve flown over 50times through 12years and I don’t think it gets better each time. Besides, the points you mentioned about the brain, we are humans, we are definitely not able to control how we receive danger, and I don’t think asking such questions as “are you able to recognize plane defects better than engineer team?” will make you more comfortable. Yes, flying may be the safest mode of transport but there are more than hundreds of crashes throughout the history

The question "are you able to recognize plane defects better than engineer team" is not intended to make you feel more comfortable, it is intended to show the futility of safety behaviours. In most phobias and anxiety disorders people seek certainty. In the case of aerophobia people want certainty that the plane will not crash but as you said, planes do crash. But in an attempt to get certainty, aerophobes employ safety behaviours such as checking the plane, checking the passengers for hijackers or checking the air hostesses face for signs of something wrong. But not only do these behaviours fail to bring certainty (or make you safer) they send a signal to the fear processing part of the brain that there is a danger so it goes into fight or flight mode. It also reinforces the belief that flying is dangerous. Although statistically you are much more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash aerophobes experience much higher anxiety in a plane than a car. The reason for that is that in a car they have no safety behaviours but in a plane they have many. It doesn't matter how many times you fly, if you use safety behaviours the fear will never go. Dropping safety behaviours is tough but I managed to eventually drop all of mine. That will not effect whether I die in a plane crash or not but it will mean that I can fly comfortably every time.

The video (at the 2 minute point) explains how your safety behaviours drive not just the physical symptoms of panic but the catastrophic thoughts. If you stop the safety behaviours the negative thoughts and physical symptoms of anxiety reduce. It doesn't happen instantly but over time your phobia will disappear if you manage to resist your safety behaviours. This relationship between thoughts behaviours physical symptoms and anxiety is taught in CBT using the anxiety cycle model. If you would like to understand more about the anxiety cycle I have 200+ videos on my channel. I have a playlist specifically for phobias. kzbin.info/aero/PLLLHgjmNNVTFri8DF7xbnwqxPOG3wLsR7

How can something be a phobia if countless people have been hurt and lost there lives doing it? Fear is there to protect us. If the track record for flying without incident was 100% that would be one thing, but it’s far from that. No one is talking about the factor of human error which is at the root of the majority of incidents.

100% this is why I find it so hard to get over my fear. These statistics matter only in a perfect setting. I’ve worked on cars and know we can make mistakes very easily, so can airplane mechanics. Another example would be first responders and medical personnel; they make mistakes all the time! Shit happens and I don’t want to be not in control, and 30k feet in the air when shit happens lol. I’m trying so hard to get over my fear though that I’ve even been getting dreams of going on plane rides lol. I want to travel around with my family so bad but I can’t stop thinking the worst. When my loved ones go on planes I pray and pray, I get so scared something is going to happen to them.
