I do remember the most cracked, respected dev, having terrible audio but everything they state - even though short - is always taken with so much focus and listening. Please do more informative but with this humour blended in. So good.

The best devs in the world, as discussed on Lex Friedman's podcast (Kaparthy and Carmack) both use a single monitor with laptop to the side. This is the case for the best devs I've seen as well. More than 2 screens means you're a trader or you're signaling that you're doing more than you actually are. - speakers -- what?

One has multiple monitors, a MacBook, a split keyboard and the Bose headphones, another one has Bose headphones and just codes on a windows laptop using vim and putty from his couch, and the other one has cheap headphones but a nice keyboard paired with the MacBook and multiple monitors and uses VSCode. I think this is sarcasm, but it seems you and I have a different opinion of what cracked means. Cracked to me doesn’t mean you know everything. A cracked dev is essentially a mini entrepreneur. Maybe they aren’t the fastest at coding, but they can find solutions others can’t. They can propose and execute on an optimization which saves their salary tenfold for the company. They find a sales funnel optimization which with a one line code change increases profits 2x. That low level stuff you mentioned IMO is helpful but can be learned in an afternoon with a big cs textbook. So I don’t really care about that. I care about things that are hard to teach.

C++ : core development, some firms use JAVA or Rust Python : research and quick analysis (like split traded volume per product, per tenor, per exchange, per trader ID...) and automation of "daily dynamic" variables used for trading Vim : all log files are very big and you can't really handle them without Vim / Emacs. They might not be super hard to navigate (just go to the end or find the pattern you want) but you just can't manipulate them with VSCode, Notepad or Excel (yikes !) KDB : Basically it's the C++ of databases, you do operations on columns super super fast. To give you an example, there are 10 millions of updates a day on the US 10Y future order book so you can't use Python Grafana : "Nooo exchange B has a big latency ! Shit product Z feed is completely off !" (usually an accident) Redhat : the only licence with a commercial support. Otherwise you better have a bearded Debian guru at your workplace Docker : basically a VM with the virtual version of Python the firm uses for production, this version doesn't include your billions of DS/custom optimization libs you download for your analysis
