Fast forward to present day, I am running my own business since 22+ years and everything had been paid by writing code, specs, and stuff related to code in this beauty of a place I would never ever have dreamed of when I was debugging low level concurrent serial port code in the corner of the bedroom. @@bassplayer807 It depends on many factors. What do you want to learn, where do you want to work, what background do you have and how can you represent yourself? Also how smart are you and how used to teaching yourself are you? Search for a promising technology and start to learn it. Maybe think about a small project you'd like to do and work on it. At the same time you should learn about coding fundamentals and good coding practices. Good luck and keep on it. Learning to code is hard in the beginning, but the longer you keep going the more rewarding it will be :)

For example - what is / when would you use a deque vs a vector, and how are they implemented under the hood? - How would you implement a simple consumer/producer program using two threads? Have you ever encountered questions such as these, and what part of your learning process would you say prepared you for these questions? ie. the courses, the pet projects, etc

@@CodingJesus I did. You talked about projects, I'm commenting on the fact that that much leetcode isn't necessary. You can get good enough for interviews with just doing a couple a day until you're sufficiently good. You're setting people up to think they have to do 10x more work then what's necessary. It largely depends where you're applying. If you want a FAANG job maybe. Anything else, no.

The best advice that I can give you is that you need a project. If I had to guess, you'd most likely be applying to entry level positions due to not having a CS, CE/EE, SWE degree when entering grad school. That means that you're going to need to a good project. From everything I've seen from practitioners and well respected individuals in the field I'm interested in, you need something that you spent more than a few weeks on. 6 months seems to be the time that is most thrown around, but the numerical time doesn't matter. Your project should be a display of your interest, desire to go deep on a topic, and problem solving skills. If you're able to talk about what you did by framing it around the obstacles that you had to go through, code wise, then you can convey to whoever you're trying to "impress" that you're knowledgeable. CS and anything software/programming isn't going away anytime soon. What is does mean, is that due to the giant influx of cs majors from 2020 - now, and the huge layoffs of recent time, you're going to need to be better than just getting a 4.0 in class.

The gift that you have, and I'm sure you're aware of this on some level, is that you know what you want (you knew you didn't want to do front-end web development, and that you wanted something specifically related to finance), and you have the drive and the wherewithal to do it. I want to learn to code really mainly to move on from the retail job that I have, and also to hopefully be involved in game development someday. Is there a language you would recommend for that specifically? C++ is intimidating to me and I've also been given to understand that you should really know more than one anyway, so I've already bought a book on Python, but like you, I don't really want to do web development.

Thats the simplest problem ever. Get a job and please your parents so that they'll keep their mouth shut.
