I landed into database administration by getting a computing degree. Started my first IT job as a QA Tester and when the opportunity came up internally at work I managed to land the role. Feel quite fortunate as its a good job.

Thank you very much for the video! 3rd year CS degree student here and so far I've really enjoyed designing databases, working with MSSQL and designing information systems. I am currently trying to find what possible career path may suit me most and I think it's either DBA or System Analyst. I dont enjoy working with physical stuff at all. May you please advise me on what to maybe try out or research to reach a decision with this problem?
@mariaxiil Жыл бұрын
These days, dbas rarely work on physical stuff but will always work closely with infra people. You may start as a developer (who codes in sql) or systems admin. Both can help to be a DBA. As mentioned here, DBAs are subject matter experts. You need to start somewhere. I started as a tier 3 support developer who use sql in MS and Oracle environment.

Hello, thanks for sharing your experience on different it related fields. I'm currently 37, working as an application support engineer, but not loving what I do. I love solving problems, and to do it with lots of creativity (and scripting as well :) ), and I don't know which IT path to follow. (Currently doing the google certificate for automation, considering doing the data analytics as well). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! I love your content =)

Thank you for your kind words. I think it will be important for you to narrow down areas of interest so that you can zoom in on those areas and identify if they are really for you or not. If that sounds challenging, start with a list of things that you do not like about your current role or job or even the company. The add to that list items for jobs you already know that you do not want to do. Coming from the opposite site may help to identify areas that may be of interest for you. As an example, for me I am done with being on-call. I just don't want to wake up in the middle of the night anymore because of an emergency at work. Any role that would come with that responsibility - I would not be interested in.

@kypdur47462 жыл бұрын
@@ITCareerGuide being on call is horrendous. It's a big reason why I resigned from being a DBA. The place I worked at wouldn't compromise and nor would I. It was originally voluntary and they forced us to sign new contracts or leave, using the fact that we had volunteered as a reason that we couldn't object. Hate HR people. Shame, I kind of liked the unpredictability of the job. Have no idea what to do next.
@kypdur47462 жыл бұрын
@@bigfatcrab you don't necessarily need to programme to be a dba. Being able to think around issues is the major skill as well as just getting things done. Programming does help, but if you can read scripts and understand what they are doing, you'll be okay.

Hello sir, thank you for this video. I am almost finished with my Associate's Degree in Computer Information Systems. I do not plan on continuing my college education beyond that. How would you recommend I become a DBA with just an Associate's fresh out of college? Should I focus on getting a certification? Should I try to get a help desk job to start? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it possible to become a DBA neither without a degree nor work-related experience but yes with IT certifications and/or non-college education? Or is it unimaginable? Thanks for any reply! Loved the video.
@ITCareerGuide Жыл бұрын
It is possible, but not with a few steps in between. You're not putting someone behind the steering wheel of a Nascar vehicle unless that person has earned that seat. You'll have to build up some experience or you may be better off buying a lottery ticket. Of course there are exceptions, but I would not count on it.

@ITCareerGuide11 ай бұрын
@@rahulanand9937 Self-taught? Of course, it is possible but not necessarily easy. Your overall professional background plays a role as well. I would start with taking a look at this Google course about data analytics. It is geared towards the junior data analyst role. imp.i384100.net/PyvMke - Go through the course to get a better understanding. Becoming certified is a good way to get started. As you go through the course there is also project related work in there and that is something I would expand on.

Yes, of course - but not coming from zero to hero. If you work at a company in IT already and progress in that direction, all is possible if you can proof yourself.

I do not in that regards. If you want to learn SQL basics, consider this course on Udemy (Partnerlink). bit.ly/3yZwizz - It is for the no longer existing Microsoft certification. The certification may not be available anymore, but the course content is still relevant and it gets you started.
