Another great video. Recently, I have become interested in construction claims / delay analyst roles. Wondering whether you have any background knowledge in this area and if so it would be great to see how a QS with the appropriate experience can make a transition into the above later in their career.

Hey, thank you for your comment :) like most job roles people tend to start near the bottom and work their way up. Having an acute and sound knowledge of construction contracts such as NEC and JCT is absolutely essential and you need to have meticulous attention to detail. So naturally, Quantity Surveyor's have very transferrable skills which is a great plus as oppose to someone who has no knowledge of construction processes and contracts. check out the link below which provides further information on what you're looking to do! www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-start-being-delay-analyst-mike-testro/

Hi Raja, thank you for your kind comment, it's great to hear that you are well on your way with your QS education :) For anyone to obtain the MRICS qualification they must complete the APC. In order to enrol on the APC and start the MRICS journey you must either hold a relevant RICS-accredited degree or have enough years of relevant work experience under your belt. It is hard for us to comment on exactly what you need as it's so subjective but from what you have said you will need to complete your RICS accredited masters before being able to start the APC unless you have relevant work experience.

Hello. What is the difference between CDP record and structured training ?
@Metroun
@Metroun 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Minh Hieu, thanks for your comment! CPD is the overall record of your structured training. RICS state that "Formal CPD can be any form of structured learning that has clear learning objectives and outcomes, such as a professional course or structured online training. It could also be learning that includes an assessment measure."

Hi! Your videos are very informative and I learned a lot from them. I still need a little help on which route should I choose to get the membership as I have a recent RICS accredited master's degree + 3 years of full-time experience in construction which includes QS. However, the problem is that these relevant experiences were made four years ago (2015 to 2018), I was not employed from 2018 to 2020, and in 2020 I have worked on a part-time basis in design coordination (I have a BSc in Architecture). Could you please guide me on whether I am eligible to pursue MRICS or if I should start with AssocRICS? I am considering the Building Control Path.

Hi Eman, thank you so much for your kind comment. It's great to hear that our videos are helping you. Despite taking a break in QSing it sounds like what you were working on was still within the construction industry? So this may leave both routes open to you. Unfortunately we cannot say for certain what would be the best route for you to take as this would need to come from RICS themselves. If someone within your organisation is RICS chartered maybe try asking them to be your mentor and they should be able to guide you through the process!

Hello, this is a difficult question for us to answer as we do not know enough about your circumstances. However, RICS is primarily an institution for Quantity Surveyors / Cost Managers on construction projects. Therefore, if your role contains responsibilities of cost management, AssocRICS may be something you could pursue

Hi, I have a BSc (Honours) Quantity Surveying graduate - RICS accredited. I am currently considering working with a Specialist Claim Consultancy firm - in the Quantum Claims division. However, I would like to attain RICS membership in Quantity Surveying as well. I am aware of the 3 routes mentioned to attain RICS chartership namely APC Structured Training 12/24, APC Other - Non-Structured Training and APC Preliminary Review. However, these are suitable for those working with traditional Quantity Surveying practices as they can match all the required competencies. My concern is whether the working experience within a Specialist Claim Consultancy firm - in the Quantum Claims division (where exposure to various core & optional competencies might be limited) would be sufficient to attain MRICS. I am aware that there are specialist assessment routes. Will this route be applicable in my case? Are there any other candidates who have acquired MRICS through this pathway? In addition, please advise if there are any other options available, if any.

Hey Booven, thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch our video. Congratulations on obtaining your BSc in Quantity Surveying, it sounds like your fully on your way to becoming a fully fledged QS! In relation to your particular circumstance it is hard for us to say definitively what route would be best for you to take due to all of the variables and so would need to come from RICS themselves. However, based on what you have said we believe a good first step would be to get a description of the probable day-to-day tasks you would be responsible for within the firm you are considering and see if they relate to any of the RICS skills and competencies. Further information can be found here: www.rics.org/globalassets/rics-website/media/qualify/pathway-guides/pathway-guides-requirements-and-competencies/#:~:text=The%20competencies%20are%20in%20three,and%20mandatory%20for%20all%20candidates. Perhaps also ask the firm you are thinking of joining if they help people obtain their MRICS status and whether they are happy to provide a RICS Mentor? As they would be able to guide you through the process and provide further information on your next steps.

Hi, I am a civil engineering graduate from Institution of Engineers (India) and have 11 years of work experience. I would like to became a Member of RICS. Can you suggest the way forward.
@Metroun
@Metroun 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, without knowing your complete background it is not possible to advise on exact steps forward with RICS as it differs on a case by case basis. However, if you have 10 years relevant work experience you are eligible to enrol on their APC (Assessment of Personal Competence) programme. This takes 2 years on average to complete, but by completing you will obtain RICS Chartership status.

@Metroun
@Metroun 3 жыл бұрын
The main way to become a member of RICS is to complete what they call the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). In order to enrol on the APC you must meet one of the following criteria: 1) Hold relevant work experience (minimum 2 years) and a RICS-accredited degree 2) 5 years of relevant experience and any bachelor’s degree 3) 10 years of relevant experience operating at an advanced level by seniority, specialisation, or in academia. Going by what you have told us, you have 10 years relevant work experience so would be eligible to enrol on the APC. Once enrolled you would need to complete the list of requirements as details within the video - we hope this helps! :)

I have a couple of questions. If I am doing a RICS accredited degree with a sandwich degree where I do a year in industry working as a QS between my second and third years, assuming I can meet the requirements (find a RICS member to become my counsellor etc.) can this year in industry count as the 12 months work experience with a RICS degree needed for my AssocRICS? Secondly, is the five years of work experience with 24-months of structured training in addition to the year of experience needed for the AssocRICS? Would the pathway to full membership look more like a 3 year university degree, one year of work experience meeting all requirements to achieve AssocRICS, then five additional years of work experience including 24-months of structed training to achieve MRICS?
@Metroun
@Metroun 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Tom, We hope you're well, thank you for your questions! In response to your first question, in theory you are absolutely right and your year in a professional company could count towards your experience and help with your AssocRICS membership. For your particular circumstance that you have provided, then yes you could achieve MRICS in that time period. On the condition that you are also able to complete the other requirements of the APC. As mentioned in the video, there are a lot of variances and entry points to MRICS depending on a persons individual circumstances. From what you have said in your comment, in seems you have got your personal timescale correct. However, your RICS counsellor would be able to provide much better advise based on your individual circumstances in your education and career when you get to that point.
