I am always really impressed that you passed this test because you have to spend such an amount of money for it and lots of people never pass the exam. I have always pretty good in learning new things from books but I never had to go working during my own studies and also I have tried many wines and spirits during the last 15 years I am still far from being good at describing them or finding out what it is in a blind tasting so its really great what you did and I am really thankful that you share your knowledge with us!

It is so much fun learning more about wines from a 'Master', who also happened to be someone you can trust. I definitetly will taste a few more of Konstantin's favorite wines and have fun doing it. Danke! Well deserved!

Cool - I also get attracted to wine by a burgundy, namely a Charmes Chambertin which was lacking the etiquette so I don‘t remember the producer. My father got it from there and returned about 50 bottles to Zurich in his american car, about 50 years ago when I still was a teenager. I will never forget that wine. Thanks for sharing your story.
@robswenson95983 жыл бұрын
That was really interesting. I hope you will do a video about how to taste and describe a quality wine to differentiate a cheap wine, a moderate wine, and a really nice wine. I have found some inexpensive wines that I enjoy, and I'd like to be able to describe why a $30 wine is so much more enjoyable for me than a $125 wine. I suspect there are several measures of quality, as well as subjective personal preferences that come I to play

Great story. My first wine tasting was back in 2001 at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk CT. Went with some friends who were already fairly knowledgeable. They talked me in to buying a bottle of 1996 Chateau Lynch Bages. Never spent $80 for a bottle of wine before and honestly thought it was crazy. That was my first taste and I’ve been hooked ever since. Also while there bought a set of Nachtmann Bordeaux stems and still have three.

Great video. Could you also explain, why you became interested in the Master of Wine program instead of the Master Sommelier? Since you were in hospitality at the time, it would have seemed the more natural choice? Your thoughts on the differences in these programs would be most interesting, would you consider one superior to the other?

Another great one, thank you! Many of your contemporaries have worked far harder, IMHO, for the same qualification that the big-name oldie MWs now admit, even a few decades ago, was based on knowledge of French wine, how the British merchants operated, and a 'bit of other stuff'. I don't think they're joking at all when they say they couldn't pass today. And finally an MW with an early career on the floor, and exemplifying it needn't be the other/or of restaurant professionals-> Court of Sommeliers and winemakers/wine merchants/the theory-minded-> WSET and Master of Wine....go 'hybrids'! (I find it more embarrassing than amusing when recently anointed Masters of Wine blurt out, every chance they get, how they'd spill wine over everybody if tasked with opening a bottle.) Personally am in two minds which way/how far to go - finishing WSET 3 now and starting WSET 4 later this year - but find your opinions very-very helpful.

I have a question. I am fairly new to the wine world. I am 57 years old, but have only drank wine for about 5 years. During the last 5 years I have done a LOT of reading and watching of documentaries that educate on the history of some varietals and the whole wine making process. I have learned a lot in the last 5 years but still have MUCH more to learn. Here is my question: I have noticed my palate has changed a LOT over the last couple of years and I am not sure that it is a good thing. Wines that I previously loved are now seeming too sweet. For example I used to love California Cab Savs and Merlots, but now many of the CA labels that I previously loved are just too sweet. I feel like I am sliding down a slippery hill to the dark side because I find myself almost exclusively buying French and Italian labels that are more dry. Is this just the natural progression of becoming a wine drinker or is there something else going on with my palate?
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine3 жыл бұрын
This sounds like the normal progression into wine geekdom... Fortunately, there are great structured and refreshing wines coming out of CA, Australia, and most other parts of the New World today as well.

this is some kind of crazynest. Maybe where people have big bussines, have a lot of money and don`t have a lot of time for shearching good wine this all make some sense. But in my life I just go to shop and look some good proposition on wine for today. Also I guess drinking wine all time is bad thing. My story of wine loving begun some bottle of wine from shop wich was from spain and it is show a wine like a qualited product because in my coutry with wine all time was a problem all people prefer vodka and 10-20 years ago in shops was almost only some trash wich was very hard to understend like solid product for man for example. Like for what me a unknown wine from peace of shit, alcohol and sugar if I can drink vodka. but with time my life was changed and I try some new solutions and now I guess I can`t leave a wine and change it on something else. But of course I am not always very happy with wine because sometime I drinking too many and sometime quality of wine from shop is very poor, but I anyway buying some wines from shop and drinking many of them even if I am already have my own wine wich I don`t drink often.
@vaporizer10002 жыл бұрын
I even can remind name of wine from spain wich was for me like a start it was manon tempranillo. of couse it is not premium wine for sure but for that time and that price it was something really new for me. Also in that time I drunk some wines from chile g7 produser entery level I guess but quality was bit floaty.
