Congratulations Ada!!! I was born in Mexico, but became a U.S. citizen in 1993, but they made me give up my Mexico citizenship then. And then three years ago my wife said she wasn’t to move to Mexico after visiting Mexico several times. So I found out I could get my Mexican citizenship back and dual citizenship as well. I gathered my original birth certificate, my original U.S. citizenship paperwork, had what needed translated and apostiled and then made my appointment at the Mexican consulate here in my city, and while there received my Mexican passport as well, one stop shop. Because I paused at following up on some items, it took two months, all of this could have been done in three weeks. My wife now wants her Mexican citizenship, I told her we need to wait for our move to Puerto Vallarta. Very happy for you!!!

Yeah, there was a Supreme Court decision in Mexico that said a Mexican by birth can not be forced to give up their citizenship. Even if the other country tells you to give up citizenship.

Stefan here. Congrats on your plans to move! I think you’ll be fine as long as you stay out of trouble. 🤗 remember, you will still be a US citizen. I do believe if you get into trouble as a Mexican citizen and get thrown in jail, it would be an internal Mexican issue, but that I think is a rare situation if you are a good person and more of a worry than a reality. If you would get in trouble as a US-only citizen, I suspect the only real benefit would be that they’d give you a visit, provide referrals, and help contact folks in the states (based on books that I’ve read). They may be able to apply a little pressure to get you out, but if you broke the law or are accused of breaking the law, you’d have to follow the process like anyone else. Hope this helps! ❤️

My parents were married in Mexico and divorced in the USA, but I didn’t need to provide the divorce papers, but I did provide their marriage certificate. I had her birth certificate and his death certificate (since I didn’t have his birth certificate). If you can get your Mexican parent’s birth certificate and their names are on your birth certificate, you should be in good shape.

In Ada’s case, only one of her parents was a Mexican citizen. It is important though to obtain all the documentation that Ada describes in the video … that really is the important part- to prove your lineage. Hope that helps!

I know your pain. I think there are nuances that depend on which one you go to. I originally went to SF but it ended up that just doing it in PV was simpler all around. Key thing is that your parent(s) need to have a CURP. If I would have had that, it would have been easier to do in SF. However, since my mom was born in Jalisco, it was simpler for me to just get hers down here.

Hey Grace, Stefan here. Expenses were minimal as Ada did the work herself versus hiring a service. She spent $100 incorrectly on expedited translation in the US when they didn’t accepted it and had to redo this in Mexico for $40USD. The other costs are are getting apostilled official documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses that are relatively minimal and the costs are based on where you need to get them from. The true cost is time to get this all in order and correct any typos. As far as benefits, the biggest (although we did not take advantage of it) is the ability to own property near the coast or border without having a trust (trust costs about $400-$600 USD per year), ability to work legally in Mexico, and ability to have reduced taxes when selling property. Other benefits include reduction in airline taxes when flying into the country and also potential reduced visa fees when traveling to other countries using your Mexican passport. Also, I think there are other benefits when moving your belongings to Mexico without some import taxes. With recent Mexican changes, our daughter may also benefit from citizenship and I think there are tax benefits when she inherits our Mexican house someday. Also for me, I think it helps getting my residency. Right now I fly so frequently back and forth it is not an issue for me. Hope this helps!

Good question. I recall seeing specifics on that on the consulate’s website in SF but don’t remember. I had an old birth certificate for my mom but was able to get a new one for her from the Puerto Vallarta Civil registry office because she was born in Jalisco so she was in the system. You might try searching that way on your next trip to Mexico.

It says California. They just needed an official Mexican version of it. Key was Ada’s mom’s citizenship, her mom’s marriage, and the proof that Ada was born to her mom. Hope this helps!

Congrats! You should be able to, although each bank is different. An Intercam bank account is easy to setup for instance - you can even go there with a tourist visa!

Congrats! It’s a pretty amazing feeling when it’s done. I think the documentation depends on the financial institution. Your CURP should do it. You’ll need to get your RFC if you don’t already have one and that will help.

The house we bought was purchased directly from a Mexican Citizen and it was very rustic so it might be more of a “boots on the ground” search but while there are “for sale by owner” places, those can be sketchy as there may be multiple family members that own the property and establishing the paper trail to make everything legit can delay things.

Stefan here as Ada is quite busy… definitely have all the paperwork in order tying names and people together. Also, we found there were typos and misspellings in official documents, so that can be an added complexity. Get as many things in order as you can and apostilled where necessary, but expect a couple of visits as they’ll likely find a few gaps. We found the San Francisco Consulate extremely helpful.

Hey Stefan here, spoke to Ada. She basically said apostiled documents are needed when documents are from a foreign country like from the US…. Applies to US birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc. We found that translation was only good from an approved, local translator in Mexico. Hope this helps!

I had an old copy of my mom’s birth certificate that I brought in when I needed an updated version (with the CURP) when I was in PV. I would think that if you Bring in your birth certificate too and request a current copy they may grant it to you but I don’t know their rules.

Stefan here - Ada's citizenship was based exclusively off of her mother being born in Mexico and originally her mom being a citizen of Mexico. Up until recently, only the next generation could get citizenship back, but as of this year, following generations can also be considered for citizenship. The real work is in establishing the paper trail to (birth certificates and marriage licenses) that are often times not 100% accurate in government systems. On my end (Stefan), I would have to be a resident to get citizenship after a long process. Since we travel so frequently in and out of the country, it is doesn't impact me much as my tourist visa resets. The long term impact really has to do with taxes and where we'll spend a majority of time as we get older.... that will be another video I am sure!

I hear you on that. That was part of the reason the guy at the Mexican consulate in SF actually suggested having one of my relatives help out in Jalisco because the info was not all inputted into the computers and given these certificates (mom’s birth certificate and parent’s marriage certificate) were issued in Jalisco and he figured it would be easier. He was right. Since my mom’s hometown was so small, they had to put in a phone call to the town to verify records.

They know the church in tijuana but no one wants to go there. Surprisingly when her dad was working in Boise the Mex consulate there said they could help him get the cert copy. I spoke to the consulate in KC whick is the closest and easiest for us and they didn't act like once we had her dad's cert it was any big deal. But they also never mentioned her parents marriage cert and I don't think after their divorce 25-30 yrs ago the records were kept. So we will see. I know you may address it later but are you on a land trust now? And will you switch it now? We found a steal on a off the beach mountain view condo about 5 yrs ago but didn't want to deal with the land trust and I read it's hard to switch it from that to Mex citizen title

@@RA-fm8wr We do own land on a trust and will keep it that way for now. On the marriage certificate, this was helpful since it was another piece of documentation that they were my parents.

Unfortunately we don’t have a name, but go to the civil registry near the Malecon and at the information desk ask for the list of approved/certified translators - they’ll have a full list there that they’ll give you. Good luck!

I just recently got my Mexican birth certificate at el registro civil in Pvr getting the exact documents you guys said Without this video I would’ve given up on this journey , as most consulates in The US make it almost impossible with little to no appointments to register a birth over 18 yrs

Fourth way of becoming a México citizen is by having a child in México. The child would automatically give both parents citizenship in México.
