In my opinion, getting an entry level job within the legal field (file clerk, legal assistant, case coordinator, etc.) while taking paralegal courses is going to help you tremendously. I worked as a file clerk while in school and seeing pleadings all day helped me better understand litigation and civil procedures. My classmates that didn’t work in the field while in school, struggled ALOT.

I am with Barbri. My certificate will be from Auburn University. I must say, if someone can get through all the test and assignments in four months they will be doing nothing else, for example, working full-time. You will be actively researching a plethora of cases, crafting pleadings, and preparing an appellate brief. However, I have learned a great amount of valuable information. All that being said, It is difficult to find someone as dedicated as this super woman to guide our career.

I just started my Paralegal Studies program at Penn Foster, I started for just $20 and so far I absolutely love it. I could get done from anywhere between 11-13 months. But that's best case scenario. I would highly recommend it.

There’s not a lot of communication in terms of getting help on assignments if you’re confused. I waited DAYS for someone to get back to me. I may have jumped into it a little too soon.

I agree with the financial accessibility thing. My husband took money from our wedding gifts to buy me a laptop so I can do my Penn Foster Paralegal Certification and is paying for the courses for me. Without him though I wouldnt have been able to even afford this.

Degree useless. In Nevada, no law firm will hire you without practical experience working as Legal Assistant and they want 3 years experience. Spent 3grand on an online legal assistant program from a top 4 year college. Useless. Can't get hired. Submitted to near 400 law firms in Las vegas. They also wont hire any woman over 35. Ageism.

I was super nervous because it really did sound too good to be true but I finally pulled the trigger and started this program last week, my laptop comes in tomorrow. I only finished the first lesson but it is definitely legit so far. It provides a lot of the legal foundation that I would need to start a paralegal job. It isn’t ABA accredited but when researching jobs in my area none of them required an ABA certificate…and it was more within my budget to pay $1599 instead of $7500 at a local ABA institution for the same thing. I’m hoping the whole externship placement is actually legit and works out at the end as that’s what I’m relying on to get my foot in the door. Thank you so much for this recommendation Misty!

I appreciate that this course doesn’t waste my time, it actually dives right in and “trims out the fat” by teaching information that a paralegal would actually use as opposed to a bunch of fluff that no one understands and will probably never come in handy. I don’t care for some of the assignments I don’t see the point of them but I’m only in the beginning so hoping that will change. Haven’t had any issues so far so I can’t speak on the 24/7 support. The laptop they provide is a basic Chromebook nothing fancy it gets the job done. I love that I can click around to read ahead and work on several assignments together without following their specific syllabus…so far so good.

I am almost done taking all my paralegal classes but still have 3 more requirements for my associates. I have been trying to get an entry-level position on Indeed but everyone wants 1-2 years of experience. I also looked at working as a file clerk and legal assistant but the requirement is also at least one year in a legal setting. If anyone has advice on how to get your foot in, please share. I would love to read on more ideas and experiences.

Working with an agency may help. That’s how I got a job as a file clerk at a law firm. I don’t do it anymore because the pay was too low but it could be a good start

Hey, try intake coordinator/ customer service positions. Also, try legal intake specialist you’ll basically screen incoming calls from potential clients. Most law firms wants you to have customer service experience. I hope this helps!

When you were looking for someone to represent you and you want them passionately working for your interest and fight for your rights when you know they have represented landlord and tenants with much more money min much more regular braces how can one ever expect to be treated fairly in that environment and why should they trust somebody in that environment you as a paralegal wouldn’t so why should we

You don’t need to have any certificate to become paralegal. I got my paralegal job without any paralegal certification, and I do have Bachelor’s degree. However, having paralegal education is a game changer if you want to move further with your job

I always thought about working in an office when I was growing up in the building industry. I had to sit with a teacher to help me pass an exam to train for a career, which is why, knowing I'm from NSW Australia, this is probably beneficial for me. To get into this industry, is it wise for someone like me to first train at one of the College of Tafe Campuses (College of Tertiary Advance Further Education Campuses) to be a secretary, get some work experience, repeat the process to train to be a legal assistant and then rank in a higher position to train to be a paralegal, since I was an outdoors person. I know, there's a level 1 to train to be a secretary and a level 2, which is high up in the ranks to train to be a legal assistant; for to work as a paralegal, I'm wondering if a paralegal needs a legal assistant to work in the industry.

Can guys have the same chances of finding a job as a male paralegal. I notice many paralegals in my state are females. I don't want to go to law school, I'm a surgical tech but once I had a dream of becoming a criminal lawyer, I'm 33 yrs old, I don't want debt, no loans.
