Thank you for putting this information together. I'm changing career paths now at 30 and it took trying different avenues in my 20s to find out that I'm probably best suited for a career in the trades rather than a life behind a desk in an office.

Back in 2006-07 I took the Master Plumber's test for the state of New Jersey. I failed 2 out of 3 parts of the test, and this is after having 4 years of schooling in the National Standard Plumbing code in Bucks county,Pa. and having around 20 years of experience as a Master Plumber in the state of Pa. I took the Jersey test with many Plumbers who were taking it after multiple attempts to pass. I should of known the fix was in, when I passed on taking a $600.00 crash course right before the exam, as I felt I didn't need it because I already had 4 years of schooling for National Standard, and passed my Journeyman's in Bucks county that implemented National Standard back in the 90's. As it was told me from others who took the N.J. State Master Plumber's test...they frown upon out of staters coming into the state to get licensed, where Pa was always reciprocal Jersey Plumber's (except Philly). But it was always known here in Pa. that...getting a Master Plumbers license from New Jersey is like getting a bar of gold. It's one of the toughest Plumbing licenses to get in the country. I don't even want to get started on New Jersey's Plumbing board....they were tough as hell.

I took the NJ Master Plumbers exam in 2012 and passed on my first attempt. I spent a lot of time studying and preparing for it. I didn't think it was that difficult, probably due to how much time and effort I put into preparing. So the more time you spend studying the easier it will be. Keep in mind the business law section is open book but you still need to study the book so you know where to find the answers in the allotted time, it seemed there were a lot of people who struggled with that section.

I want to be a plumber. I’m not really into anything but blue collar jobs, like my parents want me to have a white collar one. I feel like why waste time in school when I can get money while I learn and have a job basically for life. I have been interested in blue collar jobs such as electrician, chef, and construction worker. I’ve been thinking about plumbing and actually heard that plumbing is actually a common job in my dads side of the family lol. I guess it runs in the jeans or something. I am too young to even get a job but I feel like this will be the plan. I also am interested in things like science and math so I think being good at these subjects would help me. Sadly there are no classes for plumbing in school but I am taking Spanish so that will help me big time when I get into the plumbing industry.

@@ChuckBarron Thank you for this great video 👍 I'm 38 and want to shift careers (I'm a lawyer in NYC right now). My grandfather was a plumber and I'd really like to follow in his footsteps. I'm no stranger to hard work or studying, very used to good & bad bosses, and I'm in a position financially to do an apprenticeship. I'm wondering if the steps to become an apprentice are similar in NYC. Do I need to apply to the Union first? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. Thank you, Sir, in advance.

Wow, amazing value! Keep up the great content! Question; I have a friend that works for an old fashioned, luddite NJ licensed plumber. Does he need to have some sort of registration/license to perform plumbing work under the owner's license, or just be a registered emoloyee for the entity that was created by the owner/license holder? I should note, he does want to obtain a license but he has no help with his employer. He also doesn't want to create any extra work, stress, or liabilities for the owner's.
