From a professional Interior Designer's perspective, there HAS to be a distinction between being called an Interior DESIGNER and an Interior DECORATOR since there is no other "Official" title for those of us who have Education Examination and Experience. The term "Interior Architect" is a lot closer to what we professionals do. I went to school for 4+ years for my Architectural degree. I've taken and passed a test, I know structural construction, I know how plumbing works, I know how mechanical systems work in buildings, I can provide drawings for custom stainless steel equipment, I can provide drawings for millworkers to build cabinets and other custom furniture. If you are just someone who has a flair for making pretty things, you are a decorator. Glad you took time to differentiate between the two terms.

I'm studying Interior Design. The difference is that we will take the ASID board exam to get certified. Once we have those permits we allowed to eliminate or add non-bearing (non structural) walls, stairs, add mezzanines ECT. If a client is feeling unhappy with their house, let's say there's a wall in between the kitchen and the dining room that they hate for it might make their place crowded, and interior decorator will use techniques such as shapes, texture and color to make the wall seem lighter to eliminate that crowded feeling. (ex. paint it white) On the other hand, an Interior Designer has the permits to demolish the wall and give the client and open concept kitchen. Both are very beautiful is just that one is more involved than the other. Also Interior Designers are responsible for those cool and weird shapes that extrude off ceilings or walls in most commercial design. As an interior Designer you may specialize in residential, commercial, hospitality or all 3. Hope this helped a lil more. We also overview how the construction project is going. we work alongside architects and contractors as the voice of our clients and make sure everything is how it was planned.

Mr. Kate, In my high school design and fabrication class, my teacher always encourages me and tells me I’m very talented in the course. For one project we had to design a floor plan for a house as an architect and I took my floor plan to another level by adding furniture and designing the interior of the entire house, which wasn’t required, and my teacher presented me with the idea of me becoming an interior designer, which I thought was a pretty cool idea but never thought too much about it. a few months later I found your channel and now I genuinely am considering going in the direction of interior design/decorating as a career and I owe it to my teacher, and to you and Joey, thank you for that!!!

As someone who is getting a 4 year degree in Interior Design, I would just like to say that this is how you would become an Interior Decorator. Designers work with floorplans and codes and have to get accredited by the state they work in, while a decorator gets to pick out pillows and paint colors.

Im in school for interior design & we barely decorate its all about making floor plans & designing spaces using autocad & revit to please the clients needs. You can either do commercial or residential design plus learn about the building codes for both. We have whole classes about lighting, drafting, autocad/revit/adobe products, and much more. Its a lot of hard work & you need to be driven and passionate about it

I'm gonna pop in and be weird because I majored in Interior Design. I haven't read any comments so idk if it's been said, but there's definitely a more technical definition to being a designer or decorator. Designers deal with floor plans and the actual making of residential/commercial buildings and they have to have a degree because they're dealing with those bigger, more complicated aspects of a building (such as how big a hallway has to be, where the doors go, where lighting goes and the wiring routes and if it will run into other pipes or be in a dangerous spot, etc). Whereas decorators deal with any interior changes or decor that's in a space. Obviously both can decorate, but if you want to be an Interior Designer, you definitely have to go to get a degree. As for decorating, you can get certified for it, but I'm not sure if it's a requirement (it does help others see your professionalism). I hope this helps!

in addition, only a person with an Interior Designer License can present herself as an Interior Designer, if a person only have a bachelor degree in Interior Design she can not present herself as an Interior Designer to paying clients but she can work under the authority of a licensed Interior Designer...what this girl in the video is talking about is just like an interior decorator..or stager...

As someone who went to school for Interior Architecture sometimes it is really frustrating when people assume they can be an interior designer without much work. While some people do have a natural knack for it, most firms now won't hire someone without a degree unless they have at least a decade of proven experience and an extremely strong portfolio. For example, if Mr. Kate were to apply to a firm, I'm sure she would get the job because she has a thorough self-taught knowledge on the topic and a strong portfolio, but that doesn't mean you can just wake up one day and be a designer. Not to sound totally horrible, but there are a lot of people who have been studying design for years and years and it's frustrating when people assume all it entails is picking out paint colours and cute furniture. There is a lot that goes into designing a room; budgeting, an understanding of the history of design, art movements, architecture, etc, material study, room layouts, ADA, safety and fire codes, HVAC, basic to advanced construction, plans, RCPs, schedules, orders, etc. To anyone thinking of studying interior design or architecture, do it! But just remember that it is a lot more difficult to get residential design jobs than commercial or hospitality. Also, when studying, it's not all about what is trendy now. Most designs in school and after probably won't incorporate anything from West Elm's catalog or an unlimited or even high budget. Being an interior designer is usually much more boring than Mr. Kate's life seems to be.

Shelby Van Horn I think it's important to note the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator. Mr. Kate does more of interior decorating. As someone in their Masters for Interior Design. It used to bug me but it no longer does. I guess I just feel bad that people think it's easy and it's not. Its a long road with a long education to be an Interior Designer. Interior Decorator though. I believe a lot of colleges offer 1 year programs.

Nichelle Christine yeah, I can definitely see that. I think a lot lottaf people see what she does and think it is really easy to get into and especially residential is difficult work to find. I really love Me. Kate's work, but I think she is in a very unique situation that most people aren't going to find themselves in. I don't want to discourage people from trying, but it is a competitive field, as all creative fields are, and like you said there's a lot of work involved. :)

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS! The reason I started mentoring interior designers to start their own businesses by using their own experience is because the existing industry is so secretive and makes the job look cryptic when it really isn't! Pretty much EVERYWHERE around the world (except for some states in the USA) you do not need a license to call yourself an interior designer and the title interior designer is not protected such as that of engineer or architect. Yes if you want to work on commercial interiors I would suggest getting a formal degree, however, they will still require YEARS of practical work experience which can be gained by working on domestic interiors (and for yourself rather than very low wages for someone else)! Love your show, good for you!
@MilitaryTVgirl
@MilitaryTVgirl 2 жыл бұрын
Ok folks... Two things you need to understand. Interior Design and Interior Decorating are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! To be an interior DECORATOR, you only need GOOD TASTE. No upper-education or certification. To be an Interior Designer (think Interior Architect) you need at least a 2 year degree or certificate in the field of Interior Design. Then you may join ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) and receive your membership number. Both of which require a degree or certificate. But what does an interior designer learn? We have to know AutoCAD (that's the software program that Architects use to design houses.) We have to learn City and County building codes, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, types of lighting/bulb output, wall placement, Space Planning (That's NOT where furniture goes... it's where things like doors, windows, appliances, lighting are placed. Ever seen someone place an oven in an island across from the fridge and you can't open both at the same time or they will hit each other? How about someone putting the dishwasher to the left of the sink, but you're right-handed and needed it on the right side of the sink?) We use other software today, like Chief Architect Premier, to get exact measurement of your home, enter then into the software and create new layouts, appliance placement, correct lighting over your "workspace." We also can use the same software to put in exact cabinets that actually exist (there is a manufacturer catalog that comes with the software). So if I'm designing your bathroom, in the software I can design a new layout, and even put in that freestanding Kohler tub you've been drooling over. So you see exactly what your renovation will look like. I can put actual tiles in your design that currently exist for purchase. So you see the renderings and get to visualize what it will look like when it's complete. But that's NOT the main purpose for our existence. After I've created a design that you like, I have to create construction documents (previously in AutoCAD but now can be done in Chief Architect). Those huge construction documents are also architectural plans. That tells the general contractor exactly where the sink goes, right down to a 16th of an inch! It tells the plumber where to put the plumbing, and exactly what showerhead I've chosen, and what is required for that finish. I have an "electrical plan" (Reflected ceiling plan) that tells the contractor exactly where to place that light, or "elevations" showing exactly where to put the electrical outlets. If they are in your kitchen, I will need to specify the GFCI outlets that will trip the breaker if water gets in them. Regular outlets would short out. Folks, there is a gigantic difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator. Who do you really want designing that very expensive renovation?

I really wanted to thank you Mr. Kate for actually talking about Interior Designers vs. Interior Decorators and the exams registered Designers take. I'm in my final year of an accredited university so I can take the first part of my exam next summer and I just subscribed to your channel. So many people think that Designers and Decorators are the same and it can be really discouraging when someone thinks all we can do is pick paint colours and furniture when in reality we do so much more. I've noticed a lot of people who run channels on KZbin who do more of the decorating side of the spectrum will call it "interior design" rather than "interior decorating" and that just perpetuates those misconceptions. Again, thank you for actually addressing everything in such a clear way with the whole spectrum of our profession. Much love!

I'm currently enrolled in a bachelor of interior design program in Canada. Interior decorating on the other hand is a term that can be used more openly to express what you are doing.

Here are some tips for those of you considering the field of Interior Decorating/Design: First thing first- If you're going into this field know the difference between an Interior DESIGNER and an Interior DECORATOR. You cannot call yourself an Interior Designer without accreditation, in certain States/Provinces you can be fined for this. Second- you'll never do mood boards for clients if you're professional- you may get the odd client ask for one, but don't go into a meeting with a mood board unless you're in school and or presenting to a large group...It's all about renderings- get to know AUTOCAD or Sketchup Pro. Know your stuff! I worked for five years in a paint store selling paint, stain, wallpaper, furniture, blinds, fabric, custom drapery etc...It has elevated my ability to give sound advice, and clients respect that and seek me out because of that. I also worked for a year in a high-end tile store, designing bathrooms and kitchens with other designers and retail clients. This taught me a lot about harder textiles- including tile application, trims (Schluter) and what looks good together and what doesn't. It's also super beneficial to have a customer service background. It will only help your career. I find that's where people lack skills, not in design aesthetic, but knowing how to handle clients-specially difficult ones- and build a rapport with your clients. Learn building codes, and how to read blueprints. Also, I see a lot of Designers/Decorators with really bad math skills- learn how to calculate sqft and how to take measurements. I also find knowing how to calculate yardage required for fabric projects and wallpaper a helpful tool. Its made things easier for me. You're never going to graduate and be a full-on Designer/Decorator right out of the gate, so you might as well work part-time in a place where you're going to learn practical skills that will only help you in your career. Look at local decorating stores like paint stores, window covering stores, furniture etc. I also worked in Film as a set decorator, it wasn't glamorous at all- and the days were very long- I wouldn't recommend this path unless you're okay with being married to your career. I'm 31 now and I spend my entire twenties educating myself and setting myself up for a successful career by continuing with my education even after graduation. Only now am I able to finally work full time (comfortably) as a designer- which is rare in my city. Those of you looking to start upon graduating, try and get into work with a big builder/contractor company. Oh! And Network, network, network! Best of luck XOXO

You can model homes, interiors etc. in 3D with a lot of detail and it's pretty easy to use too. You can pay for a Pro version but I haven't found it to be too different from the free! I always find matted/framed work adds infinite value to whatever is inside it- you could pick up some nice sleek frames or build your own/thrift some shabby chic ones and maybe do a linen matte inside as well, to make it fit your theme if you find it too difficult to get rid of. You could also scan them, and maybe filter them in an editing program and have them reprinted to match your color story if theirs isn't going as well- or find an unseen space- like inside a closet for them to go. You could even go on etsy or elsewhere and get custom art of whatever your posters are of- but in whatever color palette YOU choose! That way it reflects your love of your posters but in a way personalized to your design. The best part is that's then totally unique to you and your space, and your supporting local or small artists and not big corporations that take all the profit like most common places to buy posters! I don't know too much about your other obstacles but those were my ideas for your poster struggle! 😊💜 Much luck to you!

Ashley Ainsworth I love having posters all over my room because they inspire me so I wouldn't get rid of mine. I also have an aquarium because I have a painted turtle and I decorated his tank by putting Christmas lights from dollar tree on it. And then around Christmas I put some garland around it too. I think it's really fun to do that and it makes it look nice!😁

You could also find a trophy case or something along those lines maybe something that has a door on it and you can store your collectibles in it! My dad has a lot of toy cars not really child's toys but those toy cars that are a lot bigger and he puts them in this trophy case he bought and it looks really nice and the cool thing about it is it has a little light in there!

Let me start by saying that I love Mr. Kate and the work that she does, along with her team. However, she IS NOT a designer. There is nothing wrong with the decorator, but there is a difference. As defined by the NCIDQ: "Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive. Designs are created in response to and coordinated with the building shell and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project. Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements, and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals. Interior design includes a scope of services performed by a professional design practitioner, qualified by means of education, experience and examination, to protect and enhance the health, life safety and welfare of the public..." My colleagues and I work INCREDIBLY hard to distinguish ourselves from decorators because there is a difference in our skill set, clientele, projects we will take on, and especially our education. Due to the fact that we are certified, we are held liable for any issues that may endanger the inhabitants of that space. Therefore, we go through a 4-year degree program and 2 years learning under a licensed professional before taking the NCIDQ certification examination. Decorators do not need formal education, but may obtain an associate's degree.

Yeah...as an interior design graduate with a four year degree from an accredited university..ugh. Depending on what state she lives, it is illegal to market herself as an interior designer without a NCIDQ certification. Even I can’t do that without passing my exams, and I’ve worked in commercial healthcare for 3 years.

Loved the video! yes I'm in college now for interior design and if you want to work at an actual architecture/ID firm you'll have to pass the exam. Mr. Kate is an entrepreneur and a self made designer which is awesome! But if that intimidates you and you love floorpans and creating the interior of spaces while have a steady/firm job then going to college is good too. Make sure wherever you go though is has a a program that is CIDA accredited and you constantly build your portfolio as soon as you can. when you are in an creative field your resume and degree means almost nothing, focus on your PORTFOLIO. hope this helps some of you guys as well!

You might want to give more justice to those Interior Designers that go through a whole lot of education (bachelors degree) to become a licensed Interior Designer. Being an Interior Design student myself, we go through a whole process and education to learn more complicated stuff than just furnishing an already existing space. Interior designers are interior architects. There’s a big difference. Interior decorators cannot call themselves interior designers. Interior designers need to have a license to call themselves an interior designer. I’m not sure how an “interior designer” can be self-taught since there are more things to consider than colours, furnitures, finishes. Just please give more justice to actual Interior Designers. A lot of people nowadays degrade Interior Designers because they are often mistaken for a profession that just chooses colours, furniture, finishes, etc., when in fact they do so much more than just dressing up an already existing space.

I'm getting the feeling that you're now just getting to know Kate... She's wonderful at what she does! She knows what looks good on a space and sees the concepts behind her designs. She's not the typical "interior designer wannabe" because she takes in consideration the feel of the space that she'll put her hands on. She puts in consideration different perspectives and different styles. I don't see a problem with her calling herself a professional interior designer too because she identifies to what she defines as a "professional interior designer". If your problem with Kate is how she doesn't credit the hard work of interior designers who actually have a degree, then I gues the only logical thing to say to you is to chill out. Kate never mentioned that it was easy to do what interior designers with a degree does on a daily. She never mentioned that she's much more hard working compared to interior designers with a degree? The video title says it all... this is a story of how SHE became an interior designer, not how low this profession is. Don't feel offended by Kate because of a video she made about how she came into the profession, instead, focus your mind and be the best interior designer!

It's important to differentiate between designer and decorator and Mr. Kate is a decorator. Even if a person is really good at debating doesn't make them a lawyer. There's a reason there are laws in place in a lot of areas that prevent people from using the title "Designer" if they aren't educated and licensed. It's not snobbery - it's safety. Designers can create construction drawings, know building codes and keep interiors safe. What Mr. Kate does is decorate. She's a great decorator, too. But not a designer, and I don't understand why, if she knew that, she still chose to title herself that way. And before you say "what do you care?" look through the comments - look at how many people are taking this advice to heart and are looking to enter the industry the same way. When you have such a huge following you have a responsibility to research your content.

you know, theres a difference between decorating and designing. decoration is art, design is more than decoration, its human behavioural science. “Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer - that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs and in other countries, people can sue you if you call yourself an interior designer without a license.

I know for a fact one does not need a degree to be able to become a professional at anything. it's like a book author. You don't need to major in English to write a book. But I do also think Ms.K is a decorator because interior designers are mainly to start from scratch. But then again the designer can do both those jobs. Ms.K you are very talented and love your personality btw.

However, as an interior designer who did earn a bachelors degree in interior design it feels like a slap at the hard work and money I invested in that degree when someone who isn't professionally educated on codes, textiles, space planning, etc calls themselves an interior designer. I love and respect all creative freedoms and people who are left brained like me...I do think a little respect should be paid to those who are licensed to be a designer. Because technically, unless you have that degree and/or license..you are a decorator - no matter how many clients or how much money you make. That being said - thank you for being a ray of sunshine and always bringing a smile to your viewers faces. I mean no disrespect, just an honest comment from a long time viewer. ❤

I'm sure someone else said this already, but your definition of interior designer vs. decorator is absolutely incorrect. An interior designer has education, accreditation and a thorough knowledge of legal building codes in the state in which they practice. An interior decorator does not require an education. Both are great but it's like a nurse and a doctor, if you are a nurse you shouldn't call yourself a doctor.

There is nothing wrong with being an interior decorator, and you are an AWESOME and talented one! But, even after you distinguish between designer and decorator, you still are not a designer in the professional meaning of the word, you are a professional interior decorator. I hate to be the one to add, but being an interior design major myself it is completely different than what you do and it is not fair to call yourself that repeatedly. Hi Mr. Kate. I really admire your decor skills and creativity (which i still am working on) but unless you took up a major in Interior design, did your major's thesis, graduated and took an exam for licensing, you aren't qualified to be called an Interior Designer. just an Interior decorator. i hope you don't get offended, but you also might offend other professionals who really worked hard (not to mention our sleepless nights just to pass) to finish their degree. I'm on my 4th year now currently taking up my thesis and it's really freaking hard just to get to 4th year. every work we do is criticized by the professor (starting 1st yr) and it's like we're doing thesis everyday just to defend our design and if its cohesive, practical, budget, eco friendly etc. how it's constructed, the detailing of construction, the materials. Designing is really different from decorating. for one thing, Interior designers must always -do floor plans -do electrical plans -plumbing plans -cctv plans -acu plans -do 3D planning and modelling for renos and construction work -moodboards, material sourcing, cost estimate -a lot of sleepless nights just to edit your clients preferences -furniture detailing, specifications, costing etc and many more. and that's only half of it. there's still conceptual designing, application of design theories, history etc. I hope you take this as a grain of salt. it's not to offend but to inform. You are really talented Mr. Kate. one of my inspirations actually. you have a much brighter future with your creativity if you'll take up a degree in Interior design. it's never too late to learn anyway. God bless you. :)

An interior designer is usually involved with a building project from the beginning, perhaps even working with the architect. His job is to help create functional interior space by understanding how the inhabitants will use each room. He may consider light, sound and other design aspects but is also well versed in building codes and structural considerations. Because of this, in most states, designers need official training and a license. • An interior decorator isn't involved with the design of the building or the layout of the interior space. He is focused entirely on the furniture, colors, textiles and textures of a room. His job is to capture the personality and style of the residents and express it in their space. A decorator doesn't need any official training to adopt the title. -According to another Designer

Little late to this video but next year (my junior year) I'm taking an interior design class. It's been an interest to me since I was in fifth grade, in some ways It's like a combination of things I love: Art, Organization, photography, and making others happy. And I can get paid for it! I've always loved room makeover videos, etc, and I remember stumbling across your video and binge watched them constantly, and that's been my biggest motivation since then. Thank you for joy only inspiring me but others❤️😊 Edit: I meant Not instead of Joy

Legally she can only call herself an Interior Decorator. Legally you need a license and degree in Interior Designing to call yourself an Interior Designer. However, that doesn't mean you cant be self taught about things , have a natural talent and become a professional. In her case that's what happend. As far as coding etc...that's why you can work with a professional team who are licensed to follow through with your plan and check coding etc to execute plans!

Amen! That's the biggest difference and it's important not to confuse the 2 so clients know what you're really able to do for them. Both are talented, but only 1 can actually communicate accurate plans to subcontractors that are understood to adhere to construction code.

THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR ENCOURAGING SCHOOL FOR INTERIOR DESIGN! As a young collage graduate in interior design i am tired of “decorators” who think a Designer is just fluffing pillows ! Interior design programs will teach you fundamentals of art, history and space planning. Also love your “know your worth”’!! So many young designers are working for free! This shouldn’t go on for long. If you have talent you should find a place who will appreciate it !

Hi, After being a professional interior designer for over 8 years, there is so much more to an Interior Designer than described in this video. I have recently published a book describing the essentials for any up and coming ID, including the different types of pricing for a project. Enjoy :) www.dclaxtoninteriors.com/marketplace/interiordesignhandbook

I really enjoyed this video! I love what you and how creative you are! I'm studying interior architecture, second year and I have 3 more to go. We study a lot of history, some kind of mathematics, we drawing a lot and we have many projects but non of this is compare with what I'm learning from you. The most of our teachers are old and they don't have this creative and crazy (in a good way) perspective about architecture and design and sometimes we can't be so creative but your channel is helpeing me a lot to stay positive and focused on finishing university and become a creative interior architect. Thank you for being here and for all the good vibes you're giving to us. Hugs and kisses from Romania!

I am so glad I stumbled upon your videos, Mr. Kate, you really helped me figure out exactly what I want to do with my life. I have thought about becoming an interior designer before, but I never really looked into it enough to see all the possibilities. However, now I feel like this is my calling; decorating, and showing off my room has always been super satisfying. Thank you for helping me fully realize this about myself. Keep up the fantastic work!

@@_roqui_ that's the thing. We won't be doing the same. Interior DESIGN is not interior DECORATION. There's a lot more to it than decorating a space. My problem lies exactly in the education of the public who ear her saying she's a designer and believe design is the same as decorating. And for that they won't even consider hiring a designer for the work they need and will go to someone else. Because they don't realize our education isn't on choosing furniture or picking color combinations for their house. It's actual architectural and actual designing of every little detail that goes into making a space. It's solving problems not hiding it and making it look good. I am not criticizing her work, it's as much valid as mine or an architect or an engineer or even the painter and builders. But they're not the same.
