You deserve way more subscribers, great video as usual! Everything you said is so true. The mental aspects of climbing play a bigger role than I ever thought. I can imagine it's easy to just focus on strength/technique and forget the mental part (especially as a beginner). Sure strength/good technique can give you lots of confidence but sooner or later you will face a creepy crux and risky movements that require strong mentality in order to get it done!

this is so true. I'm so freaked out about falling. I know I could do climbs easy top rope ( even if I have done the climb ) I don't feel as confidant doing it lead and don't do the same moves. and of course doing that makes me fall earlier or where I haven't ever before. I'm determined to take big falls.... ( well start smallish and work my way up). Awesome as always....

Cheers from Luxembourg..! I´m on my personal journey of climbing my very first 7a Boulder.. After 15 years of climbing more or less beyond of what I feel what might be possible I want to give it all I have once in my live... I´m 34 now. Pretty much is going on in my live (lots of responsibilities and stuff). I´d realised that I will need to focus on a very holistic perspective to reach my goal of getting stronger and climb my very first font 7a. Maybe you´re happy to hear that I REALLY enjoy all of your videos that help me to think about all the different aspects of becoming a better (and healthier) climber! ... and yes... also I´m not super weak, I´ve gained some weight over the last years, and so your first advice in this video here will be my new Mantra! :) Thank you for your informative and well reasoned chanel! nice tips but concerning the diet i would not agree with the low fat high carb suggestion. carbs are converted to glucose in our bodies and excess glucose is stored as fat, lots of carbs come in unhealthy forms with little to no nutrirional value eg. processed sugar and grains like white bread and pasta. better to limit carbs to a much lower percentage of daily intake and increase consumption of fats, unsaturated but also saturated fats which are not as bad as their reputation suggests.
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
It is way harder for our body to store ingested carbohydrates as fat than ingested fat. The fat you eat is literally the fat you wear. Just get them carbs from whole plant foods, and you'll be fine.
@climbscience48138 жыл бұрын
I think it boils down to calories in vs. calories out. Whether these calories are fat or carbs may have an influence on how you feel and how well you can adhere to a 'diet' (or rather way of eating), but your weight ultimately depends on calory balance. The body is very smart in using the fuel it has available, it will use what you give it. If you feel better with carbs, use carbs, if fats feel better, use fats!
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, we as human individuals are not that different when it comes to digestion, well being and fat storage, because in the end we are all human. In the meantime a lot of my close friends adopted my way of eating, at least when they wanted some reliable performance the next days, and they all experienced the same results. I can only explain it by supposing that carbs are burned more rapidly than fats. It's simply easier for the enzymes n stuff. A high carb diet lets you perform at your best, it makes your mind sharper, and it also makes the body lighter over time, as any redundant fat gets burned off as a side effect. Also you don't gain any fat simply because you rarely eat it. I've seen it also the other way around: People destroying their performance with high fat meals (including myself). I believe that this correlation is a big reason for "good" or "bad" days, as it is very significant.
@climbscience48138 жыл бұрын
Vegan Rockclimbing I totally believe your observation, especially when it comes to eating carbs the day before you train. My interpretation would be, that carbs are more efficient at replenishing glycogen stores, hence you have more energy when you train. About the long term effect, that's kind of a speculation, but I would imagine that you eat carb sources that are quite rich in fiber, which usually is not the case for most fatty foods (nuts etc.). It could be the satiating effect of the fiber, that makes you eat less total calories (?).
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
The same positive effects happen to occur with fiber less white rice or pasta, also very calorie dense, but high carb low fat foods. A calorie is not a calorie. The chance that a calorie gets stored as fat depends on its character, with fat being most likely stored as fat. An overdose of carbs can be easily burned off by adaptive thermogenesis for example. An overdose of carbs will also, unlike an overdose of fat, make you more active, let you do more, let you in turn burn even more calories. Bottom line: Carbs are your friends, fat makes you fat :)

4 years ago I had done an underwater weighing to determine my body fat percentage. I was 149.3 lb (67.7 kilo) with 5.25% body fat. Shortly after, I got a stomach bug and then went on a climbing trip right after. I weighed 144 lb after the climbing trip, my body fat percentage was around 2.5% at this time. Definitely unhealthfully underweight!
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын

Interesting video. Let me just say that I do not quite agree with the part about falling. Yes, you have to train falling in safe conditions to get used to it and overcome the fear of it but FALLING is always a MUST AVOID MOMENT. Falling is stressfull both for gear and people. . My approach to climbing is MEDITATION, BODY CONTROL, RELAXING JOURNEY, and PEACE. I do climb to feel the MOMENT, TO FEEL GOOD. I see many climbers shaking, bleeding, falling hard, getting furious, being stressed, yelling and forgetting that they are in the middle of Nature. First climbers did not have dynamics ropes and great equipment as we do nowadays so FALLING was a danger and AVOIDED. Today FALLING remains a danger, an UNCONTROLLED MOMENT. Great gear are made to ensure great safety. Do not take gear quality as an encouragement to fall. I train at home to be able to climb a higher level but when I go outdoor I always try to stay below my limits and never fall. If I fall I am ready for it but I will not search for it. If you fall you are trying something you are not ready for yet. Train at the gym, do fingerboards, try longer routes, try harder routes as a second and when you feel ready give it a try. I bought a panic sling just in case for exemple in case I miss that little bit to secure myself. Falling is a danger for the climber and for the people that are climbing with you. Please, enjoy climbing safe, take your time and breathe.

I've lost about 6-7 kilos over 3 months and while I can do more pullups and dips, I have noticed that I felt quite a bit weaker when using weights for the first couple of weeks until I kinda adjsted to the new weight. I still think I get exausted faster and am a bit weaker in total than before but strenght to weight ration deffinitely went up by some. I think I lost a bit too much weight in such a short ammount of time and that is why I lost some strenght but if you can lose weight I'd say lose max 1 kilo per month. good video all in all!

Ricardo8388 I have been climbing for 3 years and have to went climbing for 2 years but I started going again. I started of by learning to read the path of the wall you will climb. You said you have problems with reading the routes. Don't worry about that technique until you get the physical techniques done fluently. It's simple, which would you rather choose, be able to read routes very fast and well but no good technique or be able to use all good techniques but no skill of reading routes? You would obviously choose the second option. You have to also get your tendons very strong in your fingers. The stronger your tendons are in your fingers, the better because you will be able to grip and hook your fingers into or onto the smallest gashes and gaps. My suggestion is learn everything physical before you get to the technical things because that requires you to have the physical techniques as first nature along with the route reading, which should be first nature too. Complex but you cannot make it that simple to explain.

Is it really the fear of falling or the fear of failure? I do not think anyone will climb with a belayer they do not trust. When I climb, I do not worry about my belayer because I know he/she will do her/his job then I can concentrate on doing my job. I definitely do not want to die but I have been active outdoors and in sports to know everything has a risk and danger to it. In my case, it is more of not completing a climb without a fall or two or three.
@chra34278 жыл бұрын
Hey, nice Channel you've got here :) Why is low sodium important for a climber? My impression on that topic by now is, that my body tells me how much salt it needs. I like those kind of simple approches, but I'm open for new imput ;)
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that low sodium is "important for a climber" :) but it is definitely a very quick and easy tool of conditioning. If a heavy salt user cuts it out, he will be significantly lighter (talking about 1-3 kg depending on whole body weight and genetics) 2-3 days after, due to the release of water from his body, which the salt was holding due to water retention. And that of course is something a progress oriented climber should at least be aware of.
@chra34278 жыл бұрын
But doesn't that also effect your muscle strenght negatively? My knowledge at this topic is not that profound, but I'm interested :) (Why I think so: As I know, for exemple the often discussed use of Creatin in sports results in a strenght benefit, resulting from a waterloaded muscle and in most cases rising bodyweight.)
@ManitheMonkey8 жыл бұрын
No. Creatine is a pretty good source of energy for muscle contraction, which is why it's used in many sports and is associated with strength gain. The downside: It acts like a salt, thus it causes water retention. No performance oriented athlete would want that (lighter and stronger is always better), but mirror posers on the contrary like it because they look buffer (but not "dry"). Therefore, water retention is not associated with strength, but the energetic properties of creatine of course are.
@chra34278 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your Answer

nope, the waterretention is a sideeffect of the high dose... supplementing a small amount over a longer period works, with ver little to no sideeffects...

I'm not a fan of the common "have no fear rule" at all. In my opinion there should always be respect in climbing when doing risky moves. Most of the time when I'm climbing I'm taking a look before I do a risky move: When I fall what does this imply? What are the possible injuries? If there are potentials of injuries and it is likely that i fail the move I won't do it. Point. As an example: An injury potential are large volumes which are in the line of fall. A friend of mine broke a leg and a arm when falling from 1,5m while bouldering because of the "no fear rule" and tried to push that last move even though he felt insecure at that moment and he already felt that it would be better to not try it.

Cheers from Romania. I made some observations on some of the points you made during the video. Loosing weight (if you have extraweight on your body) is a fast method to get in shape. I lost almost 10 kg in 2 months and I got from 7a (on second or third tries) to 7c and a 7b+ onsight. But I made a few mistakes loosing weight too fast and in the long run it didn;t do any good. So ... for those who wan to lose weight I'd recommend to do it in a more patient way. Best wishes P.S. Glad somebody is making a good quality vlog :D keep up the serious work
