How do you become a high school teacher in Australia? And what is it really like to be a high school teacher in an Australian high school? In today's video, I'm answering those exact two questions including:
- University degrees to take to become a teacher
- Placement or professional experience in a high school
- Doing your DET interview
- Getting a permanent or temporary contract
- All of the daily obligations that teachers need to do: admin, meetings, drafts, reports etc.
I have been a high school English teacher now for nine years and it's still so hard! The challenges have changed from 'how do I manage students challenging behaviour?' and 'how can I learn all this new content myself?' to 'how the heck do I fit all this admin in with actually teaching?'. This job has been made even more difficult due to the pandemic, online learning and students missing so much content.

The other problem is that teachers have a pigeon hole that must be checked daily, usually at sign in. Then hopefully you have a desktop PC or laptop. Some schools require teachers buy a personal laptop to use in class. I had to check department emails early and then close to the bell as some send around updates late. Also I had to check MS Teams as some sent around info on this platform. Ditto for Facebook groups for teacher networks. Then some were Yammer enthusiasts and sent round notices on this platform. Fortunately our system did not use Zoom as this would need another platform. When I left, some were using LinkedIn. Then you had your faculty software like Sketchup and a few CAD systems, plus C++ and Python. You also had reporting software and welfare software (Hopefully the standard system, but other schools used different software). Had to learn them all. This was a lot of work.

And then every year, the old online platform was "out" and they wanted you to learn a whole new one 😔

Hey there! I'm not sure about University. But for primary or secondary school, you would need a Masters and then go through the application and accreditation process 😊

I've done a degree in Veterinary Technology and just got an offer for a Masters of Teaching at QUT. You definitely need either a Bach or Masters. QUT in QLD allows you to do a Bach for secondary as well

I have master's degree in horticulture + Bachelor's degree in education, so wanted to know if I can work in australian school or not? I was hoping to teach science. Your bachelor in education should enable you to teach. However, you would actually need to submit your transcript to see what subjects you would be approved to teach. This would only matter if you were going for a permanent position. You can casual teach any subject 😊

Hi Carly, I'm studying Secondary Education (History and PE) and can't thank you enough for your educational based videos. I have a question if that's okay. My dream has always been to become a S.O.S.E teacher (HSIE now), would that require me to major in both History and Geography in order to be considered for that position? With my current majors (History in particular), am I limited to just Modern History/Ancient History? And, is there a way to study an additional Secondary Education major post Diploma? Hey Joel! I know a heap of HSIE teachers who only have a major in history. However, to gain permanent employment, having as many HSIE codes as possible is great. In my school, all HSIE teachers teach both history and geography regardless of their qualifications. Hope that helps 🙏 🙂

Life in Australia is great. It's pretty normal to work from 8-3.30 as a teacher. You may need to do a bit of extra time in the arvo or weekend if marking or doing reports. I wouldn't be able to provide any advice on scholarships or doing a Phd while teaching because I don't have any experience with either of those sorry!

All Universities are private. And I honestly couldn't tell you about prices these days. When I did it it was about $800 per subject. Each Uni has a different score that they will let in.

Hey Vicky, I can't imagine it would matter. It's all about how you go in the classroom, your references and your ability to be involved in and lead projects. Your university degree sadly prepares you very little for the reality of teaching.

I've a question to ask regarding registering as a teacher in Australia as a foreigner - Is IELTS still required if I completed a 2 year postgraduate degree in Australia but a 4 year undergraduate degree (from Monash University Malaysia) which is outside Australia? Just wondering since a Monash Malaysia certificate is equivalent to a Monash Australia certificate.

Yes! I was a house keeper and I was doing casual work. A few days a week, a couple of hours a day!

The teaching world has changed a lot over the last ten years and continues to do so. I don't want to sugar-coat the struggle a lot of my friends and I have experienced in this industry. If you are a teacher and are valued, treated with respect and have positive mental health then more power to you 🙏😊 But from what I've seen and experienced, that is not the norm. Additionally, the workload just continues to grow and is pushing a lot I people out of the industry. I know it's not the sunshine and rainbows video you were hoping for, but certainly more an accurate representation 😔

Yes, one teacher teaches all subjects. You need to apply through TeachNSW and submit paperwork including your degree!

I wouldn't know exactly what you would have to do to transfer your qualifications. But we are certainly desperate fir teachers at the moment, so it would be pretty easy to get work.

@@MiraculousNithila you need to get 8,8,7,7 IELTS score. Considering you are English teacher, shouldn't be a problem. But listening test can offer accent issues. There is difference in American, British, or Australian accents. In IELTS you can get any or mix of them.

No unfortunately. It's easy to make the switch if you did it the other way around.

The reason I was asking is to know the scope of a primary teacher vs secondary teacher (commerce i.e. accounts, economics). I see secondary (maths and science) is in demand. How is the demand for commerce teachers?

@@andream6815 from what I know, you wouldn't need further study up to Year 10. Not sure that there would be a big demand for Commerce teachers. Especially since that would be taught by HSIE teachers and they are in good supply! Plus, Commerce is an elective, not a mandatory subject. Some schools may not even offer it.

I recently looked into studying teaching after doing a placement involving volunteering to mentor children in my bachelors of IT course, it seems like something i really enjoy and have passion for. I have a question regarding the course, do i study the four year masters in teaching course then do accreditstion afterwards?
