I was lucky with my train job applications. The train company who was hiring is a company i had worked for many years in their none rail business. I had years of experience working for them in driving transit buses. I also had awards for customer service given by the company and all my references were current employees in the company. This gave me a huge edge in selection. Some of the process is just luck as I needed to beat a 1000 other applicants. I think the main reason I was selected is because of my experience in transit buses and the company knew me. I even screwed up some answers in my interview lol. Networking is very important in the rail industry. Another thing is if you can do some research on SPAD awareness and things you can do to avoid a SPAD this will help as companies are big on trying to bring their SPADS to zero. My advice to people is train companies are big on safety and customer service. You want to focus on selling those qualities

I’m a bus driver - I hope this helps me! I wanted to drive trains since I was 7 years old. Unusual for a girl I know but I love them. My grandparents lived in a house that backed onto a railway line. At first they terrified me (the old BR Thumpers sounded scary) but I went on one and was hooked! Tried applying for rail jobs but found it difficult. Met a guy thru a railway recruitment thing: he was a bus driver then got a guards job before qualifying as a train driver. He told me bus driving would help so I started doing that. That was 12 years ago! I now have 2 children and have stalled going onto the railways due to ill health. Last year I got a kidney transplant after waiting and now feel much better. Just scared of applying and I’ve got so comfortable in my job that I don’t want to leave my friends! But driving trains is still my passion and I understand Train Drivers work a lot less hours than bus drivers yet get paid ALOT more!!

I'm at DMI stage now (next Tuesday, as I write this). The TOC I applied to put the psychometrics and MMI before the DMI, but I have read that some TOCs do it the other way around. Keeping calm and making sure you understand the instructions are the keys to passing the psychometric tests. There was another guy there on the day I did mine that got kicked out after the paper tests because he didn’t understand the instructions on the search test and only got about halfway through the page. The assessors don't mind you asking as many questions as you have to, to be sure you fully understand.

@CareerVidz4 жыл бұрын
Hi, here is a page with tips for London Underground Train Driver: www.how2become.com/careers/london-underground-train-driver/
@NoddyMaccy3 жыл бұрын
The bulk of these are very much the same for London Underground. Our training is shorter than National Rail. The biggest tip I could give you, make sure you study the practice material you get when you’re applying, that will help you better prepare for the first assessment.
@NoddyMaccy3 жыл бұрын
My second tip, because I don’t know the future of Night Tube, it will be best to start off as a CSA (Customer Service Assistant) and then apply internally once you’re in. Working on stations really helps you gain knowledge on how we function and it helps in a lot of roles you apply for, on top of all the training you receive.

I have just finished the second process to become a train driver where I filled out an online questionnaire. After watching your very informative video I really believe I have many of the skills to become a train driver but it has left me with some concerns. My main concern is I have bad handwriting due to being dyslexic. Glad to say the dyslexia never stopped me from leaving school with a O level at maths, becoming a pro footballer or passing the Knowledge to becoming a London Taxi Driver, but I have always been somewhat embarrassed by my written skills. So my question is if I know my handwriting is poor & I know it will hold me back, is it worth going to the interview stage? Many thanks & hope you are safe & well.

@DeanoWheels4 жыл бұрын
@@lifeofcocobella8053 Not sure if all train companies do the same online tests. Im going for a Trainee Driver at GTR so will give my experience & how the process works with them. The first online test I did was a set of around 40 questions asking you about yourself. Ie Can you adapt to learning new things, are you ambitious, do you find you get irritated easily and so on. You then had to answer these questions by pressing on either - Strongly Disagree Disagree Neither agree or disagree Agree Strongly Agree I manage to get through that stage & then was sent my second online test (Mini Scaat) in early May. So there was two online tests in total. The mini scaat was just that. It took around 10 minutes. Wasnt difficult but I would say this you-tube channel (Thanks Richard) certainly give me some kind of edge. Heard back in late May that I passed the Scaat test & was told my next test (MMI) would be at the assessment centre in due course. Sadly not heard back from yet but they did tell me to be patient due to the pandemic. When have you got to complete the online test by the way? I know what you mean about being nervous. I have applied for at least 30 job ads as a trainee train driver over last year, and ALWAYS the response was that I did not pass the first stage!! A trainee I know was already been involved in a person under train incident and he had only be on track for 3 months
@CareerVidz3 жыл бұрын
First off, congratulations on becoming a trainee train driver! That is a tough question to answer, and you'll probably be best asking it to your mentor, or another driver who has been through it. It's incredibly sad and unfortunately an aspect of driving trains that does happen. My advice would be to make sure you are prepared it could happen, speak with your mentor, and make sure you have a good network of people around you. The railway company should also have a counselling service in place.

@@bmxphilosophy9805 I've been doing some research into some TOCs, and all Train Driver roles require the right to work in the UK. I don't unfortunately as a US citizen. It's not a job I would get visa sponsorship as well, since it's not a shortage occupation.

I see most drivers contracts are based on a 35 - 37.5 hour week. What are a drivers average hours per week? (Scheduled). I’m a HGV tanker driver. Due to Working Time Directive and ridiculous hours, I’ve been debating a career change for some time.

Hi Richard. I've applied to a TOC near me. I only found the advert quite late. So I applied within 48hours of the deadline. I'm a coach driver with 13 years experience. Do you think my application will be overlooked due to it's close call submission? Thanks Ben

Hi, you don't have to take any course. However, I just feel it will improve you understanding and knowledge of health and safety. You could choose any of them, providing the ratings are good and the cost is not too high.

@Engwish Muffin well not really slower brakes they are much heavier than a car meaning they take a lot longer to stop. 20 football pitches to be exact for some locomotives

My real name is on this post so I suppose if the train companies see my post, it will rule me out, but just to be fully honest... I have lived abroad teaching English (as a foreign language) for about 20 years now and have reached the age at which I have to decide to stay abroad forever, or go back to the UK before it's too late (no pension house. etc). Looking for possible opportunities back 'home' and I have found none that appeal, other than things I have no chance of getting, and by now I do NOT want to be a teacher any more, nor at my age can I afford to borrow the thirty grand required to do the PGCE. Loved the job but like many things, it has a shelf life. Train driver is the only thing I have seen which I fancy and which is financially viable, but when you have spent 20 years teaching English it doesn't give you a CV full of some of what this job seems to require. I have some strings to the bow yes, but train drivers don't need to know 14 languages, nor how to prepare people for exams. I have even been a TV presenter, newsreader, translator, musician, journalist, done voice-overs for the UN, and much much more... It's been a colossal few decades, but financially not so, I am watching this video and losing the will to live, not because it is a bad video, NO WAY, but because I just can't prove I can do half of this stuff from my working history. I suppose I can demonstrate flexibility and interpersonal skills, and ability to learn, but half of it I have just never had to do. Safety related? Team work, been freelance for a decade now. I think it's pretty much mind made up then, I will stay where I am.

Hello. I am currently 15 and really do want to work on the railway. Apparently it is getting harder to get into the industry because apparently they are starting to look for people only with experience on the railway already. Is this true? If so, what qualifications in education could help?
