No problem Matt: Q1. whilst I am waiting to find out the results of the interview, do you recommend I read any additional materials to learn more about your Train Operating Company or the role? I am keen to learn as much as possible. Q2. I noticed on your website you have a new batch of rolling stock being delivered soon (or another relevant news story from their website). Has this been an enjoyable project to roll out? I recommend only asking a maximum of 2 questions. I hope the above helps and make sure you check out my website here: traindriver.org Cheers, Richard

I have been a mainline passenger driver as well as a Duty Operations Manager, A Traincrew Supervisor and a Performance Manager and have had a 25 year railway career. Everything you are saying is utter nonsense. The drivers role isn't customer centric, its operationally focused, the passengers are just a retail aspect, but ALL drivers are Operations staff, so square that circle! A seasoned manager can sniff out bullshit and non genuine applicants from 100 yards and what counts is people who are aware the standard to drive trains is very high with a 9 in 10 failure rate and that's just the assessment test. Train drivers get paid for what they know and their ability to react to emergency situations and do the right thing instantly as an instinct. You have to stay calm in any emergency as you have the responsibility of as many as 800 lives at any one time, that's more than can fit on an Airbus 380.
@CareerVidz4 жыл бұрын
Wow, which TOC did you work for that didn't have a focus on the customer? Agree with your second part of the comment, you will get asked questions on handling emergency situations, handling pressure, and staying calm, and focussed 👍

Thanks - useful video. The only thing I'd contest is the answer to encountering an obstacle on the track. If you're travelling at speed and encounter something you will be acting on instinct and split second decision-making - you are not going to have time to be thinking consciously of the people on the train. I would also say you first need to assess the obstacle before then following procedure. If the obstacle is minor then maybe you are going to carry on as tho it wasn't there. Assessment is the first step.
@CareerVidz6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your thoughts. I'm not sure I agree, but I respect your view. The priority is safety of the passengers, yourself and the rolling stock. It's also very important to follow your trainee train driver safety training and use an appriproaite dynamic risk assessment whilst assessing the situation.
@galacticambitions12776 жыл бұрын
@@CareerVidz Thanks for your reply. I don't really know what I'm talking about as I've never driven a train, I drive artics for a living. But even as a car driver I don't think I'd have extra thoughts about who might be in the car with me when encountering something at speed, all my attention would be outside the vehicle. But maybe it's not the same for everyone. As for separating out assessing and then subsequent responses, I guess you could roll them all together under the heading of training. You're definitely right that you can't spin that answer out any more than the basics when you have no experience, but I think separating out assessment would be a safe bet and would allow for a slightly fuller answer. I am cynical about a lot of 'corporate values' stuff. The people who actually invented trains in the first place never thought about such things, they just got on with it, and the more 'customer focused' the industry has become, the more I think the public has come to hate it. I realise I have to play the game and spout the jargon if I'd have a hope of making my face fit if applying for a job as a train driver, but inside I'll know it's a lot of HR created gumph.
@mistofoles4 жыл бұрын
Well, I thought common sense would dictate that if you come across an obstacle on the track, you stop the train and immediately call it in before another another loco smashes into the back of you.
@CareerVidz4 жыл бұрын
How many people do you know that have common sense?

I think it's the train station staff, cleaners/maintence signallers etc that are striking, because of this the trains can't run. Not acctually the drivers striking.
