Stick with it all of you ,it's a great job , career , vocation you need dedication and discipline and don't think you know it all , you never will , and don't buy £25 or £30 cutters ,you will lose them that goes for all the most expensive tools , pay mid range , mine are £10 Irwin ,if I lose them buy another set and buy a metal tool box ,last you a lifetime don't buy plastic they are all crap , and lastly understand your trade , don't turn up and say what do you want me do , you should know ! Stay in and do the maths + science it will pay you off big time , don't scrimp on your knowledge ever , and do your testing 2391 ,take pride in your work and try be the best , its life long learning if you fail any exam DO IT AGAIN, you will have knocks up and down but stick with it

I did a domestic course at trade skills 4u at 64 years old and I am always on youtube watching every post to do with electrics I have checked all the electrics in my house and corrected every thing that is not to regs ie no gromets in any back boxes. To many to list but all fine now. I bought a kewtech 63 plus that cjr uses and all tests out fine. Also had pull swich in bathroom so moved it outside and connected it to a normal light switch much better. and no problem with zones as outside the bathroom. I don't have a problem now with any domestic electrics. Great course but must learn yourself by watching and reading.

i know the way im currently doing it is probally not very popular with the sparky community however it was pretty much the only option for me, im doing it through one of these " new trades " companys , you pay monthly and get sent books and get access to material and have to do the C&G exams when you complete the criteria, i simply cant afford to go back to college (they are all closed atm anyway)or be an apprentice.... i have a mortgage and a newborn, so this "home study" approach works much better, and before everyone shoots me down saying i will have the quals but not the experience, im working with a sparky for free 1 day a week, and will be until i qualify in 3/4 years, just putting another option out there :)

Thanks for the video! I am looking to become an electrician as a 2nd career and also keep my 1st career too. I plan to do the lv2/3 2365 at college with home study and move into the Level 3 NVQ. Am I unrealistic to think I could gain the experience for the NVQ under voluntary work 1 day a week? I appreciate this will take a lot longer to complete but I understand that. Appreciate your advice on this. Thanks

Presumably to get the qualification you actually have to take a test/exam and that's what counts, not attending a course? Can you book the exams separately (for people who reckon they know enough of this stuff already?) e.g. I have an engineering degree and a lifetime of DIY and I've read some books and the regs and plenty of discussion online between electricians about less clear-cut things. I'm sure there are some holes in my knowledge but I don't think I need a 2-yr college course. A bit of swotting and some example papers seems like the right sort of approach. What's the right route in for someone like that (for domestic work)?

What is the point of NIC and NAPIT? It lets you sign off part P work. That applies to installations in dwellings not commercial settings. I guess also a nice badge for your van along with other warning notices such as CheckATrade and Chas. Part P was heavily relaxed in 2013 leaving only a sprinkling of jobs in dwellings that require notification. On a full rewire you could simply notify via local authority so no need for NAPIT. So what “scheme” covers commercial work? The Electricity at Work Act 1989.

@montystelevision3238

There are three items of notifiable work under Part P. The CPS permits a member to give assent the work meets the requirements of building regs and 7671:18. But other aspects of electrical work touch on other building regs but can be un-notifiable. Those works should also be in accordance with 7671:18 and any other regs applicable. Such as cutting holes in rafters. Who even issues minor works certificates? Work undertaken by CPS persons in the blocks I manage rarely get them. And a DIYer wouldn’t issue one.

Could you do a video on Periodic inspections? I manage three blocks of flats and have seen some shocking reports from Landlord owners having EICRs. Including results showing a near full rewire is needed but my MFT shows otherwise. Another berating a dodgy outside socket on a 4the floor dwelling with no garden. All from competent persons scheme “electricians”.

Thanks. I recently completed 2391-52 for this reason. But come from a specialist industrial background. I am seeking an EICR on my own home to calibrate my findings against a competent persons electrician. That perhaps would make an interesting KZbin video.

whats the cost of the courses to go on? does it vary region to region within the UK? even the cost of entry can be prohibitive enough, especially to adults wanting to go back and train. manufacturing has taken a massive dive in the past 18 months and has shrunk into very concentrated pockets throughout the UK and unless you can relocate or willing to travel galactic miles everyday, you may consider a career change.... case in point. Downturn and disillusionment are driving a diversification in career path but the upheaval is brutal to say the least. It's now down to a choice of either something in IT or Fintech, or going trades based.... neither is ideal.

3-5k a year, depends on college not region really (except in london I'd imagine) Government pays up to the age of 25, after that you got to convince someone that you are worth paying an extra 3-5 grand a year for... it's rare but it does happen.

If you get a level 3 this can be imported (RPL) into your apprenticeship qualification but get this confirmed from your training provider because some start you back at year 1 of your apprenticeship so they can drawdown more funding (not great practice). Hope this help. Gaz 👍🏻

Hi Gary , I’ve finished my level 2 diploma , just finished my level 3 diploma , and doing my 18th edition on Thursday , at my college on level 3 I have done the 8202 testing and inspection and 2365 but I’m worried that the 2391 testing and inspection is more recognised , I have already got an apprenticeship lined up and have been working with the guy for just under a year not on my apprenticeship and I’m starting my apprenticeship in September which will be a year and half , but I’m still worried that the 8202 won’t be as well recognised . (We didn’t get a choice to do 2391) , any help appreciated

Is the whole of the electrical industry in the UK tied to city and guilds? I've found the whole experience of 2365 to feel like a massive money making scam, as they gate keep access to the industry the course structure and schedule has been condensed so much to maximise profits from delivering the course you pretty much get processed like livestock in the shortest time possible. Actually learning something doesnt seem to matter, your handed mock exams with all the answers to question you get in your actual exams and shown a bunch of brief power point slides relating to answer to question in the current question pool. Understanding the subject didn't seem to matter. Since the cps lock down and requirements of a level 3 diploma & nvq to take an AM2 the whole training industry has turn into a money making ripoff zone. What Actually option do you have other than a c&g couse stripped back to half the amount of time it would realistically take to deliver the content, government funding for the course now has made the snatch and grab attitude of training schools even worse... I've not even worked in the industry and im already done with it.
