Enrolled Agents are tax professionals who have unlimited practice rights before the IRS.
To receive this designation from the IRS the tax professional must take a 3 part comprehensive test that tests their knowledge of the tax law. These tests are given at Prometric testing centers and must be scheduled in advance. The 3 parts cover:
- Individuals
-Businesses
-Tax Law, Ethics, and Representation
Once all 3 sections of the exam are passed the tax professional can apply for enrollment before the IRS with Form 23. An enrollment fee must also be paid and a suitability check passed.
This involves the tax professional having a background check as well as making sure they are in tax compliance.
If you have outstanding tax debt you can still become an Enrolled Agent but you have to have an arrangement made to pay that debt. I talk about Installment Agreements in Episode 10 of the Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens podcast. You can stream it here:

Once the suitability check has been passed and the application has been approved the IRS will send the Enrolled Agent their Enrollment card and Enrolled Agent Certificate.

I personally used Passkey which is now licensed by HOCK. I will be doing a review of Gleim and HOCK the next week. Tuesday at 11 am EST I will be covering what I used.

For the PTIN do you have to have a business or work for a business to get it? Because that’s what the IRS requested when I was applying for it. I’m still in college and I was thinking I could get it an EA credential but I don’t have a job or a LLC yet to list a business .

You can work at different firms but if your intentions are to pass this year I recommend investing in a review course.

First, congratulations on passing the exam! It typically takes ~60 days. If it's already past that amount of time you can e-mail your full name and address to [e-mail].
