WOOOOOOOW ,you made this video just in time.I was first considering becoming a cardiologist then gyno then radiologist or going into diagnostic imaging.I always wanted to do something in the medical where I knew for certain i could help someone to the best of my ability but didnt know what to specialize.That was until I learnt of OT and PT then I became sure THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO DO.A video I saw years ago of a young boy learning to walk with a prosthetic leghad resurfaced and it touched my heart seeing him giving it all to learn to walk and I also kept thinking of the people who were there to help him overcome this issue.Thank God I found you and thank you for making these videos.

Thanks so much for this video! I'm in San Diego and looking at DH for the OT program. My Bachelors is in Hospitality Management and all of my science and psych classes were taken right out of high school so I've probably forgotten everything and will be taking on all of the prereqs. I'm strategizing to be able to apply Spring 2021. I was so excited to see that you went to Cal State, too, so this video was super relevant for me. :) Thanks again!

Thank you so much for posting this. I am in a place in my life where I am at a cross roads with my career, and its so stressful. I have a Bachelors in Health Science, and am a School teacher. I have been looking into Sonography as well, and then recently stumbled across Occupational Therapy - so I thought I would do more research on if I think its a career choice that fits me. I stumbled across this, and you have answered so many questions for me, and also given me a really good insight into how to get into it. I am from Australia, so obviously there will be some differences. But you have sparked a passion in me for this. Thank you for sharing, God Bless xx

TieshaTiana I’m studying OT in Australia! We’re super lucky here because it’s so much easier to get into OT - no pre-requisites, not nearly as competitive, can become registered with the 4yr undergraduate degree etc. And amazing projected job growth for us in Aus too ^_^ Oh, and no letters of recommendation either!! I did 2 years of Science before switching to OT and it’s been the best choice ever.

Yay you went to CSUDH so did I Go Toros! I just got my BA in Psychology from CSUDH. Now I’m taking my prerequisites so I can apply for MSOT at CSUDH, WCU, and USC. Keeping my fingers crossed and praying I get in. Thanks more videos please. Any tips on shadowing an OT? Letters of Recommendation, GRE scores, how to study for GRE, recommended GPA? After my dad had a stroke I took him to the Carson center and the CSUDH OT students would help him. I took Intro to OT with Professor Paul he’s awesome too! That’s how I fell in love with OT. Thanks!!!
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Elizabeth! So cool connecting with a fellow Toro! Paul is the man!! :) What a fascinating story you have. As far as tips go: if you have an idea of places you might be interested in working or checking out, give the facility a call and see if they allow prospective students to volunteer/shadow. That is what I did. I called my local hospital and it was relatively easy to set up. If you are in the LA area, this should be even easier as (im sure you know) the two main OT schools are located in LA and you're certainly not the first person to inquire about volunteering. Letters of recommendation and GPA recommendations i mention in the video but 3.0 is a the minimum GPA to be considered. I didn't do so hot on the GRE so I can't speak to that haha. But with that being said, it's about the entire picture, not just any one area. So if you shine in other areas to make up for a not so great one, they certainly will take that into consideration. Best of luck to you!!

I'm currently a second year OTA student in my second rotation of fieldwork! I'm assuming by this video that you went straight into OT, correct? I've been going back and forth with deciding if I want to get my masters to become an OTR. I know I have some time to think about that because when I graudate in May, I still have to return to complete my bachelors. Do you think you could do a video on your view of a COTA and OTR, how their days differ, what you think would make someone want to continue on to become an OTR, and maybe even pay differences? I'm new to your channel and just subscribed! :)

Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I have been recently considering studying to become an OT. I also have a degree in Communications (Advertising, 2012) and have been working in a mix of hospitality/management and sales since then. I want to help people and do something that is rewarding. Find my "Ikigai!" So your video really inspired me :) I was actually looking into becoming a PT, and my good friend who is a social worker recommended I look into OT and I'm sucked in. I will have to take the prerequisites at my local community college but the OT coursework looks both far more interesting and far more "up my alley" than PT which I can imagine will translate to a better fit professionally, too. I'm in FL so will ideally be looking for a program around here, as my fiance works here full time. I think the prereqs are pretty similar to what you mentioned. How did you go about connecting with an OT for your volunteer hours? Other than beginning the prereqs at community college and studying for the GRE - the obvious steps - I'm a little stuck on where to start!

@oxdeekofskyxo

Julie Lewis hey Julie! I’m pleased to say I have begun my journey :) I am currently taking prerequisites at my local community college and should have them fulfilled, in addition to GRE done and observation hours, in time to apply in January for a program next fall. I would not be able to get everything ready so quickly if I were working FT, but I’ve dropped down to about 20 hours a week (nights, at a restaurant) to accomplish all of this. Most traditional advice I found for finding observation hours suggests cold-calling or dropping in to local institutions with OTs and just asking- schools, hospitals, rehabs etc. However, I used the AOTA website and found a Facebook group for my local chapter. This was an incredible resource! I posted on the group and there were several OTs happy to help. I’m currently completing some hours in two diverse settings- one with early childhood and the other general population. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hi Blanca! I'm sure you will make a fantastic OT. Looks like you will have a nice head start with an associates in psychology in terms of the required pre-reqs! Thats is awesome. Definitely make an appointment with a college counselor. They should be able to offer you literature on the OT schools you are interested in and the requirements, etc. That should help you narrow your choices. I would also suggest looking into shadowing OTs in your area when you have some time. You can call local hospitals, pediatric outpatient clinics, hand clinics, etc. This will give you a nice idea of what to expect. Hope that helps!! Best of luck to you. :)

One of my really good friends is SO very shy, and is also an OT. In fact, if you watch the video "Therapeutic Outdoor Play| Timbernook" she is in the video with me. It seems as though when you are doing something you love and are passionate about, it is easier to overcome that shy-ness and you naturally start to blossom. I definitely wouldn't worry too much about it. There are so many different types of OTs, I'm sure you would make a fantastic one. :)

Thank you very much for explaining this field. This might be an interesting question but I was curious if you thought this career was achievable for someone with a visual impairment (20/200). I am able to see well within 3 feet of someone, use technology on a computer (simple zoom or audio for large amounts of text) and have great communication skills. I do not yet know enough about how my visual impairment would affect me in this field but I am highly interested as I know exactly what it’s like to think differently and adjust to what life throws at you. Thank you very much!
@nekoleamber

I love that you asked! It would be pretty hypocritical for this career to NOT be achievable for you! So YES I definitely think there are settings that could potentially suit you very well and adaptations that can be made. There are so many different sub-settings, and you may have to do some research to find ones that you would be interested in or feel is a good fit. I know there is driver rehabilitation settings for patients who suffer stroke, etc. A hand rehab setting would be another area to look into. You would be such an asset to your clients and co-workers as you have learned how to adapt your activities of daily living on a regular basis. Go for it! :)

Hi! I’m in a similar boat. Earned a BS in Biology years back and am unhappy with my sales job. I have a few of the prerequisite courses completed from my college days, but need to take a couple more and get my volunteer hours. My question is about the GPA required. I spent my first 2 years of college in a major I hated, and it wreaked havoc on my overall GPA. Will this be a big factor? After I changed to biology I maintained a 3.26 overall.

Congratulations to you, that is awesome! It's actually funny you mention that because I actually used to work in sales too and found it monotonous, unfulfilling, and strenuous. Likewise, I also wanted to study diagnostic medical sonography but decided against it when I found an OTA program at a junior college. I will be applying next semester and my chances look good, however, my question to you is whether you know of any COTAs that became OTRs eventually? I want to finish my undergrad first but for me it is beneficial to become a COTA to save up for my bachelor's degree and pay off some loans and get experience for a few years. Would you say this is a sound plan? Also, what types of GPAs have you seen be accepted into OT programs?

Jace Ontiveros Hi, I am not an occupational therapist, but have been looking at programs. There are a few OTA to OT programs, I would recommend just looking at the University’s that interest you and contact them. GPA requirements are usually 3.0, but I’d say strive to get a little higher, hope I helped some and good luck!
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 5 жыл бұрын
Jace Ontiveros hi there! That sounds like a solid plan and plenty of COTAs go on to be OTRs. And yes, there are programs that will bridge you from COTA to OTR. GPA is typically a minimum of 3.0 and it gets more competitive as time passes. My best advice is to go at your pace and do what feels right for you. Becoming a COTA will give you lots of experience and prepare you for OTR when you decide its time. 😊

I notice you said you completed your prerequisites in 6-7 months, which is generally the length of one semester. Here in Texas, Human Anatomy and Physiology are combined and you must take Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 (plus lab for a total of 4 credits )as a prerequisite for Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 (plus lab for a total of 4 credits). Did you take all of those courses you mentioned in one semester? If so, girl props to you. You are my new source of inspiration. I'm so happy I found your channel.

Ch MS haha I don’t know that I’m that cool! They were also combined (anatomy and physiology) but we only had to take one set of A&P where it sounds like you are taking two?? Wow! Also, those classes were full in my closest community colleges so I had to pony up and sign up for University of Phoenix (online course). That was a much easier course to power through and it was only about 12 weeks. Expensive, but it was my only option to meet the application deadline. Best of luck! You’ve got this!! ❤️💜

I'm bouncing back and forth between applying to OT school or Speech Path. school. Ahhhhh so much to think about. Hey Jenelle! Good for you for making a change! I obviously love OT, but I also know many SLPs who are happy with their decision too haha. When looking at OT, PT, and SLP I was drawn to the fact that OTs look at the entire person, not just any one aspect of a person. I believe you should believe you should be ok with your pre-requisites. At least at CSUDH you could count classes that were less than 7 years old. :)

Would I have to do over my bachelors degree? Or are there courses I can take that are equivalent to a degree? Not sure what to do.

This helped out so much I’m going into my senior year of high school and due to personal experiences within my family, I’ve decided I want to pursue a career in OT but in my college search it’s not a lot of schools that offer ot related majors courses etc. so my question is what do you think would be good to major in if you want to become a occupational therapist? I was thinking about majoring in Psychology but I don’t know.

Hi Sydney! Good for you for knowing what you're passionate about doing so early on! That is a great question. A lot of the courses in other majors simply won't transfer. Psychology can be a great option! Do you have any idea what population you'd like to work with as an OT? If mental health is a consideration, than psychology seems like a no-brainer. If not, other science degrees like kinesiology or something similar would really help you excel when getting into the anatomy and physiology aspects of the program. Hope that helps! :)

Thank you so much for the informative video filled with positive energy. I have 1 question - I'm interested in helping people mentally and it's coming down to either pursuing education in Mental Health & Addictions or OT. OT seems like it has more opportunity however Mental Health is directly my niche. is there enough of an avenue to do OT and help people on a psychological level or should I follow my passion?

Hey Nekole, I love your content, especially around OT! I recently graduated my Masters in Occupational Therapy in England, U.K. I am keen to work in Los Angeles, but not sure how to go about getting the visa, or how the process would work in general. I have looked into recruitment agencies who walk you through the process such as MEDPRO and Conexus, but they seem to only recruit nurses. I need a recruiter who can help with sourcing the OT job in my area of specialism, apartment, car rental, visa/ permits/ any pre exams I would need to take for AOTA.. etc.. Do you have any advice please? Or know of anyone who has relocated (even for 12 months) from the U.K. to the states to work?

Hi! I’m a soon to be college senior and I have been very interested in pursuing a career as an OT since high school. In fact, I want to apply to OT school right after I graduate, however, I am doubtful of my prerequisite grades/GPA since I barely make a little above the minimum GPA in terms of my prerequisites, but my overall GPA is rather high. Would you mind sharing any advice on this particular subject? Such as if I should wait on applying and retake classes to boost my prereq GPA or leave it as is and just take a shot at applying since they consider everything rather than just prerequisites. Thank you!

Hi Jocelyne! Congrats on almost being done with college! I say you should go for it!! Generally, colleges tend to look at all aspects that make up the applicant, instead of overly focusing on any one area. If you have an overall high GPA and get stellar letters of recommendations in combination with high GRE scores, you look pretty good on paper. Some colleges will even interview you. So there are plenty of opportunities to show that you are a qualified OTS candidate. :) Good luck to you!!

I asked this question earlier and the answer I got was no, but yes? Im graduating with a degree in psychology, but im taking the prerequisite classes for my SJSU program. If I was you, I would find an OT program, and look around for opportunities to shadow. If you really want to go the OTA to OT route, find a bridge program. Otherwise, you have a bachelors, and it would be costly to do a complete OTA program and then a whole different OT program if it wasn't bridged. (meaning your units would not count and you would be paying two different bills)

What I meant to say is that I hadn't completed any of the required pre-requisite courses (with the exception of statistics) because my undergraduate major was unrelated. If you are a psychology major or choose a major related to health, chances are you will have taken at least some of the required pre-requisite courses giving you a bit of a head start. :) It doesn't matter what undergraduate degree you have, so long as it is from an accredited college.

@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Johnathan!! That is so exciting! I really enjoyed the program and I made some lifelong friends as well - so in my opinion, money well spent! ;) As far as volunteering goes, if you have time to check out a few settings I would recommend that! It will give you the best idea of what to expect as an OT and where you may potentially be interested in working. There are SOO many options in your area, and most have worked with plenty of future OT students. I would recommend looking at a hospital near by, a pediatric clinic, hand clinic, etc. I was short on time so only volunteered in a hospital but there are so many aspects to explore in the hospital (acute, nicu, inpatient rehab, etc). As far as resources go, you'll want to join your cohort's facebook group. Great resource for everyone posting literature, tips, etc. Once you are in the program and you have your tour, you will get linked up with a "buddy" from the prior cohort. They will be an amazing resource for you. You can email them about which books you reeeaaally need and which ones you might be able to get by without haha and whatever else you may need. All the important stuff. In fact, your buddy may even sell some of their books to you at a discounted rate. I'm sure I am missing some stuff, but if you ever need anything feel free to shoot me an email hello@kidsOThelp.com. :)

Hi, I have 2 question. Do I need an occupational therapy licence when working or is the degree good enough when looking for a job. My other question is can I just go back to a community college and get a certificate in occupational therapy if I allready have a BA or do I need to go back to the university. Reason I said that is because college classes can b cheaper.
