TOEIC near perfect score in 3 months? From what level? I'm guessing from lots of informal self study / immersion to formally trying to learn to ace the test? Your imagination definitely limits or helps you with language learning. I couldn't really imagine learning any foreign languages until I had visited Europe. That experience blew my mind. And then later I decided to learn Japanese. I was even living in Japan and studied 2 years of grammar classes before going there but I totally felt a mental block like I used to feel about German before going to Germany. But just going to Japan didn't eliminate the block for me. I figured out because it was simply because I looked so different (and was taller than most Japanese people) that I just couldn't take on a Japanese identity. What really brought this to the front for me was when I watched some western shows/movies on Netflix dubbed into Japanese and seeing Japanese being spoken (well not really - it was dubbed) by all these white people was a bit of a mental shock for me. (Not broken Japanese like mine, but real fluent Japanese). I was also older, almost 40. Anyway, I'm totally past that now thank God. I think recognizing it helped and just trying over and over to speak and connect with Japanese people.
