The worst part is, thanks to so many people claiming intolerance because it's trendy, people with Celiac disease who legitimately can't eat gluten constantly have to deal with skepticism and cynicism about their condition.

I think it balances itself out, due to crazy wannabe gluten intolerant morons, there's a lot more choices in gluten-free products out there for people with that condition legitimately. I'm pretty sure people who are actually gluten intolerant don't act like arrogant idiots like the video is mocking.

yakurimoe Comes with a down side. Now that it is no longer a small niche market, if something tastes like cardboard, the people who legit have no other choice but to eat it, can't do anything about it, as they are the small market.

groot mcgroot Are you sure it's explicitly wheat? Is it possible that you felt better because you were paying more attention to your diet and just generally eating healthier? Try this: go back to your old diet and follow it exactly but remove all wheat products. Then try whatever diet you're currently following but include wheat. See what changes you notice. All that aside, though, the placebo effect (and it's opposite, the nocebo effect) are powerful things. If you think something's going to make you feel better, there is a very good chance that it will.

Omg this is what fake food princesses do big time, because they NEED the conversation to be about them, so by providing adequate nutrition, you have taken their eating habits away as a point of focus and conversation. I have one actual gluten intolerant friend who straight up brings her own food to every event or eats first so nobody has to feel awkward, and one princess friend who always interrupts conversations with ‘sorry does this have X in it, I’ve been trying to avoid X lately I think I’m allergic I first noticed I was getting headaches last week and oh look we’re talking about me now”

Gluten foods do give me some issues, but not enough for me to bother people with, course my old injuries scream more than the bleh feeling. There is one problem with that: The person you were talking to was delivering a message for "gluten-intolerant" people. It might have just been that the gluten-intolerant people gave up on getting something gluten free, and were able to do so because their issue with it was benign, rather than hold everyone up. This might not have been visible when talking to the person placing the order for everyone, since messengers seldom ever convey the message 100% as it was intended, or felt, as is apparent from the game of telephone or Chinese whispers. I deal with the same problem trying to avoid chemical additives, GMOs, vegetable oils, corn syrup, refined sugars, and other bad stuff in food. There is just too much to consider, and I very infrequently have my meals the ideal way. Heck, I learned that olive oil adulterated 50% with vegetable oils like cottonseed and safflower can still pass as olive oil without any additional labeling here in America. The problem is that a perfect meal is so maddeningly impossible to consistently and affordably get, that sometimes, after trying hard, you just have to shrug your shoulders and tell yourself "It's better than starving" and eat what is less than ideal to your standards. Note: This is an example you don't have to read, but to add perspective to this problem: One time I was part of a camp group, and the meals were provided for everyone with the fee. But they were cheap and crappy. Not only were they very unsatisfying for a hard day out in the heat (The portion sizes were small and most of the time you couldn't even go for seconds), but they were almost entirely refined, processed foods, especially refined carbs and corn syrup, loaded with synthetic additives, vegetable oils, etc. and the produce that was available was never organic, and sometimes came canned, and the condiments to go with them were just as bad. I lost my vigor on those foods compared to before camp despite the exercise, but I had to get greedy in order to not starve, and at one point got so desperate I ate 2 tiny packets of peanut M&Ms to help satisfy my protein needs a little more (Since the meals were mostly refined carbs). It was way, way below standards for me, and my eczema got so unbearable that week it kept me up at night (When before camp it was very well under control, even in the heat). But I had to give up standards to avoid starving. So maybe the gluten-intolerant person just gave up on his standards for a bit so everyone could move on. I know I had to.

It is not likely gluten. It is the glyosphate used to dry wheat is the poison for us! Wheat is drenched with this round up for the drying process. Put pressure on the grain industry to not poision our food. People are not gluten intolerant just poison intolerant. It is the wheat with the added glyosphate that dries out the GMO wheat and non-organic wheat for processing. Glyosphate kills around 70% of the needed stomach flora and causes inflammation in the body especially the gut and brain.

I'm sorry but then how are you gluten intolerant or have gluten allergy...?

You are likely not gluten intolerant but poison intolerant.

My 7 year old daughter is allergic to wheat (not intolerant, allergic). If she is exposed to wheat, she gets large red hives all over her body and starts to wheeze. We can't even cook wheat pasta in our house because the steam makes her wheeze. We have to carry an EpiPen around with us because of this - it's a dangerous condition. it REALLY makes me angry when hipsters say that they are 'allergic' to wheat or gluten just because they have chosen not to eat it. Reading on forums etc, these people who have made a decision to avoid wheat often pretend to have an allergy so that people will take them seriously. All this does is further alienate people with genuine wheat allergy, and cause restaurants etc to take wheat allergy less seriously. A lot of people don't understand that wheat allergy is a real thing, and that it can be life threatening. I don't care about your quack medical beliefs or food phobias, you stupid fucking hipsters. Stop pretending you have an allergy, you are making the world more dangerous for people with real medical conditions.

James Beat Yes! I have celiac disease (blood and biopsy diagnosed) which is NOT an allergy. It is an autoimmune disorder. Every time I hear someone say they are “allergic” to gluten, I cringe. Wheat allergy is very, very real. Gluten allergy DOES NOT EXIST. I would much prefer to have Celiac than a wheat allergy, as horrible as it is at times. I get very frustrated with the whole trend because I feel like restaurants are so used to dealing with people who don’t actually have a problem with it, they might take less care with my food.

mk4break Actually, my daughter's allergy doctor told me that gluten is most likely the protein that is responsible for her wheat allergy, so you definitely can have a genuine allergy to gluten Genuine gluten allergy is extremely rare though. I'm sure that most people who claim to have a gluten allergy are just hipsters who want people to take their fad seriously. If my daughter eats food containing wheat, the reaction is unmistakable. She gets large red welts all over her body about 45 minutes after eating it. We can't cook wheat pasta in the house because the steam makes her wheeze. She was allergic to milk too, but thankfully she grew out of it. Her numbers for wheat are so high that the doctors say she will most likely always be allergic to it. Here's the difference between real allergies and food fads - I would give anything to be able to give my daughter a real birthday cake or send her to school with sandwiches. We don't like the fact that she has a wheat allergy, and nor does she. She doesn't feel special, she feels left out, despite our best efforts to give her a normal life.

I’m used to bloating when I eat any bread and get either diarrhea or constipation a lot before cutting it out but I started getting that again when I went back to eating it because fuck it I want a cheeseburger

There are levels of sensitivity. I began showing signs of intolerance a little over a year ago, but my mom has been severely intolerant for about 12 years. When I started showing signs, I knew I had to give up gluten, but don't (yet) have the full effects. For example, I can still tolerate Kellogg's Rice Krispies (made with malt flavor, a barley product). That doesn't mean I can just have a normal slice of cake or pizza. At Thanksgiving I accidentally forgot that gravy has a little flour in it, and got mildly sick the next day, but my mom would have been sick for well over a week if she'd messed up like that.

lol, this is funny because I have celiac disease and I will ask the server if they have a GF menu, then immediately order a beer, but ONLY if certain beers are on hand. I try to stick to coors light as I've heard from a few sources that it's essentially gluten free (this blog even tests beers for gluten and posts the results gluteninbeer.blogspot.com/2014/02/coors-light.html). Having a few coors lights doesn't seem to affect me, but if I eat food containing gluten I can definitely feel it pretty quickly. So, while I get your point at humor (I'm guessing many people that claim to be gluten intolerant are full of BS) it doesn't mean a beer is out of the question.

i can't stand those who act like it's bad for them when they don't have celiac disease. I've got it. I wasted away in the hospital. In 3 weeks, I lost 55 pounds. This was back before it was well understood.... And before it became a fad to think you have it (those idiots). They have to go in and remove a piece of intestines to make the diagnosis. It's caused by the same genetic mutation that causes Lupus, which my brother has. If you don't have it and act like you do, I seriously want to punch you.

Yep, sure am. It messed with my stomach lining, though. I've got "abnormal cell growth" which might one day turn to cancer, but those odds are pretty small. My intestines still don't absorb nutrients the way they should, so iron and b12 are screwy. But ya know, it beats dying. ;) Thanks for asking.

+bluestudio67 I know a person who has LEGIT celiac disease and gluten may mean a 911 call. When she got married, we had FUN putting together a neopolitan gelato "cake" for her with some tasty whipped cream frosting. She still giggles at the "diet cake" we made for them to celebrate the wedding. We ALSO know people caught up in the gluten-free fad who irritate us to no end!

Steve Slaughter It takes a creative mind, doesn't it? When I was diagnosed in 93, there were hardly any pre-made gluten-free foods, and what there was tasted like cardboard. Now, with all this fad diet demand, I have all kinds of things to eat. The price continues to drop. So, while I'd love to shake some sense into these whimps, I am grateful - in a way - for their persistent stupidity. ;)

Agreed. Having a variety of gluten-free options on the market and in restaurants is great. But the sad trade off is that people who actually have celliac disease are gonna be lumped in with the annoying fad-diet people when they order the gluten-free stuff.

I work at a country club, and the most frustrating part of this idiotic gluten trend is when a member sends a waitress into the kitchen to ask me what is safe for them to eat. I always recite the following: "I am not a doctor, and therefore not qualified to make those decisions. Please tell the customer that if is life threatening, they should consult with their doctor on what is safe to eat before walking into a restaurant that doesn't specialize in gluten free foods." I'm not going to pander to 200 people who have the delusion they suddenly developed gluten allergies overnight. That is our problem in society today. We pander to delusions.

Literally my cousin. You'd think we're getting ready for a funeral when she eats gluten, dairy or meat. But then often you find her munching on biscuits and giggling which later she vomits. It hurts too see your loved one going through it. But this makes me laugh 😂

My sibling was recently diagnosed with Coeliac disease - tbh if that were me I think I’d eat pizza anyway and just try to find a way to cope with the explosive diarrhea and damaged intestinal villi 🤷‍♀️

OMG love this. I have celiac disease and it drives me up the wall when I see people who are "gluten intolerant" chow down on things I know have gluten in front of me. When I point it out, they'll say, "oh really?" And check out the label. Drives me crazy!
