22 November 22, 2023 Try the double frogging type hook of a comparable size to the original treble hook or a size or two bigger without the split ring on the belly position hook point riding up like a recommended inline tail hook. When retrieved the hooks ride closer to the body, and less likely to snag on anything. This will work on any stick type lure. Best of Luck, and Stay Strong, Will

I have done this upgrade but I didn't cut the hook. I used a split ring on both ends. I have not found that the hook will get tied up on the lip yet but I have not caught a fish with this upgrade yet. I have done better on the out the package set up. I landed 5 stripers and dropped 3 due to the hooks it came with. I now have three SP's and they all have VMC 2/0 hooks

+Shaka Antoine I really think that's the way to go. I mean, if we are talking about big fish that can straighten the hooks it sounds like a joke to use a treble hook that is cut... it's like changing something bad by something worse. Maybe that cut hook has worked... but in long term I am sure many will tell how the fish got away with the hook in their mouths. So I am totally agree with you Shaka; that's the option common sense calls. Besides, two rings offer enough rotation so not much need for a swivel... and one can also increase their size (strength) of these rings if need it.

Everyone doubting the cut hook should try to understand the chain that connects you to a fish. I make my own plugs and for a LONG time you couldn’t pay me to cut them. In fact even after seeing the actual evidence, both on the water, and by standardized testing. Look at custom plug builders like Gary Soldati of Big Water lures, Beachmaster plug, Plug Lab etc....These guy cuts all their hooks and tons of fish over 50lbs have been taken on them. Plug Lab is almost exclusively canal focused with his line of pencils and I’ve personally seen his torture tests and was extremely humbled by the results. I’m talking over 100 pounds direct pull pressure and if cut correctly***, for whatever ungodly reason, the damn hooks hold. Or if you’re like me and wouldn’t take the word of some random turd on the comments section, and you want to see the actual testing go to the Stripers Online and see the tests that show split rings rated at 150lbs deforming and opening on a 4x VMC well before the hook showed any signs of failing. The shank of the hook was bending before the eyelet. Not to mention Toby was using a 2/0 6x VMC. It was explained that the radius of curvature of the eye is so much smaller than the radius of the hook bend that the eye is stronger even with one side cut, just like a Siwash single hook has one end “open” but yet when’s the last time you heard of the eye of a Siwash single hook opening? www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/533481-various-split-rings-cut-hooks-pull-test-results/.

I think you can use use two good split rings so you don't have to cut the treble to compromise the hook....just saying.

Wow, you put the ring on so fast! I have the VMC rings and it took like 3 minutes to get just that on. Not sure I wanna cut my hooks tho...

Why not use a more heavy duty split ring?
@caliisbtk8 жыл бұрын
Cutting the eye of the hook will compromise the hook won't it? A big fish would open the eye.
@ia28358 жыл бұрын
They can, but a good cut hook won't open. The split rings would bend first. I don't do this modification, I still use split rings

Yes, it works on the floater and the sinker.

I would not put a swivel on my hook, that hook is gonna swing all over the place. hook will damage the body with that swivel, plus with all that play that increases the chances of losing a fish.

@johnschaub78109 жыл бұрын
megasif the sp's are a bigger plug. 6inches- 1 1/9oz for the floating sp. 5 3/4inches 11/16 oz for the large saltiga

john schaub That's it? Why the price hike on the saltigas?
@johnschaub78109 жыл бұрын
megasif maybe they are through wired or better hooks im not sure , it doesnt make much sense to me why theyd cost so much more. ive had plenty of success with the cheaper sp minnows. definitely a good idea to upgrade the hooks if yours going after big bluefish or bass, though.
@johnschaub78109 жыл бұрын
megasif another great casting lure in this class is the savage gear manic prey. ive had success with them on bass and blues, and they seem to be tougher the the stock sp's
@megasif9 жыл бұрын
john schaub I have the saltiga...I was recommended it by a good fisherman..but it cost a heck of a lot for me. My nephew did pretty well with the SP's...I think the only advantage the saltiga has is smaller size w/ weight transfer bearings for longer casts. I think Japanese lures tend to be expensive no matter what. Pretty sure the saltigas are not wire through. The saltigas run too high for me...I've only managed to catch bass, not my intended species. thanks for the suggestion. Savage Gear is turning into an awesome company.

No offence but your guys must stop using treble hooks. They cause a lot of damage to fish. Inline jigging hooks are a better option. Try Mustad new KAIJU HOOKS
