Hi Eric! Thank you for all your work. I am in my first year of teaching ESL and I find this very useful. I have some issues with a 8 grade class (15 years old students), they becoming pretty rude and less engaged. Do you have any advice?

I’m a first year teacher teaching elementary esl and I feel like my personality doesn’t match their age. I’m in a Montessori system with multiple ages in the same class. The students do not like me and I feel like this week it escalated a lot they are avoiding me and work. They say that they don’t like English. They don’t even listen to me anymore .. I’m trying to be a fun teacher and a fun class but it’s not working - is jt too late to get my class back? What to do?
@etacude2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the later reply, Hamade. :( Building report with your students is important, it helps if they like you. But it is not necessary. Respect and the fact that they do their work is your ultimate goal. Tell them that their like or dislike of you or English does not matter. They are your students, and as such they are expected to do their best. As a sidenote - You will try to make things fun, but they have to apply effort and do their best. That way they will also learn better. I hope that your past month has been good and things have improved.

I disagree with your point about greeting students with hugs, high-fives etc. These do not waste time, they foster positive relationships between the students and teachers and can help create a safe atmosphere in the class. If that's wasting time in your opinion, then isn't meditation too?
@etacude3 жыл бұрын
Post-edit I felt the same way. That I didn't bring up the value it has in building relationships with students. Also, many kids out there really need a hug. So I was too severe and didn't mention these positives, unfortunately it was too late to add them. But, when teachers watch this I want them to be conscious of why they are doing things. I don't want the entrance method just to be used cause they see it on social media, but think about why they would do it. I disagree about meditation being similar to the entrance game. The entrance is good for building relationships and fostering comfort. Meditation is a skill that can be practiced and improved with many benefits to life. Thank you for calling me out on my views! I hope other teachers do the same because it allows me to reflect and reconsider. 😃🙏
