The difference between measuring then marking and eyeballing is seconds and only a couple minutes at the end of the day. I’ve seen people put their eye balled box offsets next to each other. You can tell it was eyeballed. All my box offsets throughout a building are exactly the same, it’s called craftsmanship.

I’ve found that putting the conduit flush with the bender ovals the end of the conduit at least half the time, and it won’t go in the connector/ coupling. If you stick the conduit past the bender an inch you don’t have that issue.

It all depends on how the conduit is strapped to the wall, though. In my experience, a box offset is only required if the pipe is up against the wall, with one-hole straps. But if you use push clips or minis, the pipe is kept about 1/4" off the wall, so you can run the pipe straight into the box without any offset.

Absolutely correct. In the UK, we call it a dog leg. I use a Record Unibend Electrical Conduit Bender with vice. I start my bend 6" from the end so I don't flatten the tube as we fix by threading the end also as I am working at waste height I can look down it like looking down the barrel of a rifle to keep my bend true and then sight it to a straight edge to check its parallel.
@zierlyn

I was taught to (and have since always) put the connector on first before bending. The screw is the perfect indicator of the top of the bend, no need to try and eyeball the bend to make sure the offset isn't getting skewed sideways. Screw the connector on. Handle down, put the conduit in the bender with the screw pointing straight up. Pull down a bit to make the first bend. Slide the conduit forward 4ish inches with the screw pointing straight down. Make another bend by pulling down a bit. Done.

As my father told me never to start your bend at the beginning of the pipe as it oval the tip making it hard to go into connectors "especially the ones that are precise" we go about an inch in, then after we barely kick the pupe we position the bender face where the first bend ends and barly kick again This has worked for me for over 35 years And you can get precise bendes using marks or the way I explained and practice to speed up bending without marking and wasting time

Anyone insisting on marking twice then bending has never had to bend a lot of box offsets in one day or at the same time then had someone ask why you are taking so long. Do one big job and you wont be marking anymore you will just get a feel for how it should be. The only time its really worth taking the time to mark is when you are running several conduits into the same box and you want it to look the same because they are side by side.

Watch starting at the very end, 2" back gives me the look I like, but if you go to the very end depending on the bender or the quality of the conduit, you can flatten the conduit just enough to egg it so it won't fit in the connector. This is why it’s best to just use stand-off straps when running pipe on the wall IMO. Especially if you’re using compression fittings. No box offsets needed. And you don’t scuff up the wall tightening the compression couplings.

Those straps aren’t good everywhere like a school gym etc..

@@Zoe_yard in some situations the one hole straps are better, you’re right. But like I said, where compression fittings are required if you run your pipe flat against the wall you scuff up the wall tightening your couplings and a box offset is almost pointless because you’re gonna have a gap on either side of the coupling because the compression nut holds the pipe off the wall anyway. To me stand-off straps and no box offsets looks better when using comp fittings. To each their own though

I still mark the pipe, but I use my fingers and thumbs for quick measuring. I put my hand with my thumb in three different "poses" for 1/2, 3/4, and 1" pipe. I always bend box offsets in the air, and it's mainly a muscle memory thing, but it's usually a little shallow of 10 degrees. Not marking it and/or using measurements less than 4" between bends makes it hard to fix/adjust if you miss it. Mine always looks perfect and I don't need to use my tape but it's taken a couple years to perfect box offsets for all the various boxes and pipe sizes. It's amazing how simple it is to perform, but only mastered after countless repetitions.

If a lot of boxes with conduit runs. You can use the greenlee bender, it's a mold template bender. Result is very tight shaped offsets for the boxes. Perfect.

Here’s a video you should do because I have ran in to fixing these , wall surface mounted box in garage with conduit ti the rafters Romeo ran to the conduit then stripped and feed down the conduit to the box , the problem I keep running into is that here is no protection ate the conduit opening where the wire enters and the wire gets cut and shorts ! So you should show how to protect this situation?

Gonna be honest, the moment we got the tabletop offset bender in my old shop, there was no going back. Stick the conduit in, one pull, both bends done perfectly and exactly the same every time. I’ll never go back.

Im a 23 year journeyman electrician. I never put my pipe flush with the shoe. As often as not it will egg your pipe and make it hard to insert into your connector. Unfortunately many "electricians" dont even use box offsets these days. They use a one hole strap to force the pipe to the wall. It is good to see someone trying to be a craftsman, so please don't take my comments as negative.

Is there a way to get the conduit to come out of the box on the front for a light fixure. I found an old light from outside and it was connected by conduit there was no junction box.

Practice it over and over again with bone pile, looking and pating attention how you do it each time, until it's perfect. Once you nail it, hit it exactly the same until you're consistent. If you paid attention you'll know how YOU bend a box offset. Also, I find small bends more difficult on the ground, try flipping it over handle down

For DIY folks that have little/no experience with a bender, you can buy offset conduit connectors for metal boxes. Cost a little more but if you don’t need a large number it might be worth considering.

I do conduit on a semi regular basis (low-volt doing 1/2, 3/4 and 1"), instead of buying the end set screw connector, i just buy the offsets. Bending is cheaper, but takes more time since you've got to put a connector on the box anyways.

Greenlee makes a 1/2 and a 3/4 box offset bender. I always leave a 1-2 inch tail so that the conduit end doesn’t become out of round.

Bend them in the air free hand on emt. Typically with rigid were mounting on 7/8 strut so usually not needed but once in awhile we get a wall mount 3/4 rigid and bend it same as i do emt. I cannot recall ever having a bunch of them where i needed to use a mechanical bender to get repeatability. Every job seems like less and less rigid is being used. Materials cost i guess and every penny counts.

I do 2" back 1st mark then 6" back 2nd mark and do 10° bends and it looks pretty good and I cam keep it consistent and matching when I have multiple pipes. I bend a lot of pipe and if I'm not matching other pipes going into say and 8×8 or 12×12 yada yada then I aint marking shyt lol. But I put up probably 500-1000ft of pipe a week depending what's going on, half a billion dollar job site, been there 2 years, still ain't finished but 2 of the 4 food production lines are up and running. I do emt, ridged, and stainless 3/4-3"

Ps: turn the bender upside down and bend to the 10° mark instead of using your foot, so much easier and faster btw You'll be able to bend these in 15-20 seconds

If it’s inside of a wall I never did offset bends. Only on exposed work you need offset bends. The reason is you can only have 4 each 90 degree bends before you need to put another box. The offset is counted as 2 each 45 degree bends equal to a 90 degree bend. Inspectors will catch you on your bends. They make a tool for offset bends which will save you time.

Not being an electrical contractor, can someone explain why I would care about a box offset that's inside my wall and will never be seen? Is there some kind of function that's impeded by not having one, or is it purely cosmetic?

With me, it became a "feel." I could feel how much bend I just put into the EMT. It's just repetition, I guess. With rigid conduit, I always used a hickey, sometimes two hickies, depending. And, manual Chicago benders, too.

Starting at the end of the pipe will cause the pipe to oval and flatten. I typically start about 2” back from the end. You can always cut it off if you want it tighter to the end.

It always depends on where my run is and the framing. If there's 3ft to support the EMT and I can go straight into the box, I will do that whenever I can without the box offset. The less bends the better for the wire pull. Just my take. Also, when you put a strap on it, you have 3ft to do that, so the EMT will be flat on the wall and be symmetrical and Clean in the run, so your gap is at the connector where your offset would be. 😀
