This is pure gold, Marty. 5 years learning how to play and I've been stuck with bends till today, doing them in a very noisy way and sliding my finger nails under the strings. The claw-and-then-push movement you've showed us is absolutely great. And leverage the guitar to get that vibratto, what can I say, best teacher in YT. Thanks, Marty.

3 finger bends feel weird to me. I always use two fingers. My biggest problem is how to let the bend out without having the other strings ring out when you let out.

@@danielgonzalez3780 Bend with middle and ring finger, mute higher strings by just touching them with the index finger. Do not fret the notes, just touch and mute them. As for the lower strings, mute it with the palm of your hand :)
@Zacchus2 жыл бұрын
Once you’ve bent your note up try cutting it off with your right hand (pick hand). Basically a palm mute. Chances are you’re probably not going to bend a note up and then back down very often. I feel like most bending is up then followed by some vibrato and then the note ends. P.S. I also have trouble sometimes not hitting unwanted open strings.

Bending and vibrato is a very fine art form. When I first started playing I listened to a lot of Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, SRV, Freddie King, Albert King,Robin Trower and Jeff Beck for the blues call and response. Then I saw a Paul Gilbert lesson many years later where he explained the art of bending and had an exercise for bending. Still love the 2 string SRV bends and especially like the Robert Cray vibrato to this day as well as Hendrix. Cray because he plays so clean.
@slickrick1098 ай бұрын
I know this video was made 3 years ago and I don’t know if you will read this comment but first of all I want to say your vibrato is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m 63 years old and I started playing guitar when I was 10 but I never took any lessons and stopped playing for a bunch of years. But now I’m so into it that it’s all I want to do. Problem is I’m playing the same old stuff so I look at guy’s like you to get inspiration and insight. Some people are great guitarists but I think they forget about some of the things that we get stuck on. I like the way you show us how to do things but don’t run off on some tangent just to show us how much better they are than us . That stuff just makes me change the channel. Anyway thanks again for the great stuff and sorry for the rant

This is a great lesson on bending. Thank you Marty. What I have more trouble with is the vibrato part at the top of a bend. You showed a bit of it in this lesson but a deeper dive would help me greatly. Maybe it's just more practice and finger strengthening that I need, but any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Marty!

There are a few songs where you want to do that on purpose, where you roll up over that next string and purposely pull it down noting it, then pull off. I know I have heard it on something before. Can't think of the song right this second, but it will come to me.
@jhowson37484 жыл бұрын
You avoid the other strings from ringing out during a bend by resting your strumming hand lightly on the strings above. He doesn't mention it, but MArty is palm muting the whole time as you can clearly hear the strings get hit but not ring out, like here 8:48. It takes practice, but it's necessary, and eventually you do it without realizing it.

I saw that too and was amazed at not only the skill but how much it reminded me of the more modern styles of like Yvette Young or the guys from Polyphia. I was never a big fan of the 80s Vai stuff other that technical ability, but he has been able to keep relevant in music for 40 years.

Using the middle finger to assist makes this 50,000 times easier and now I feel like a real pro LOL.
