If you have a Pleco, cut the green skin so that it doesn't form a ring. Sometimes a Pleco will get the ring stuck around its gills and will not be able to breathe. If you cut some of the green skin off the edge, this cannot happen. Happy Fishkeeping!

What about adding finely crushed egg shells ... I've been doing that for my mystery snails a couple times per wk ... Seems to keep their shells healthy ... Have to peel the skin lining the shell and that is easier if the shells are placed in a bowl of water and microwaved for a couple of minutes ... A coffee grinder works great for powering the "DRY" egg shells ... The finer the eggs shells are, the better !!!

If I just freeze my veggies & thaw them out do you think that would soften them up enough for the snails & fish to eat?
@traceyxxrose74542 жыл бұрын
Super late to this party but because OP didn’t seem to know if/why salt was bad (at the time he posted this at least) I had to comment saying no one should EVER add salt!!! That should go without saying for freshwater fish, but especially for your snails as well . You’ve never heard of little kids killing snails and slugs by sprinkling a little salt on them? Creek I know, but it really does kill them immediately. It will also kill your freshwater snail almost instantaneously if you give them salted veg. The whole point of blanching veg at home for our fish and snails is to ensure there’s no salt, which may be present in store bought blanched veg.

I tried to feed blanched cucumber to my mystery snail and my betta went nuts! Rolling on it, dive-bombing it... I don't know if he was eating it or not? I got worried and took it out, because he's only supposed to eat insects; I didn't want him to get sick... But it was just a strange, unexpected reaction from a meat-eater. Not sure what to do about that.

so basically the word 'blanch' means to boil?
@ShellyCline6 жыл бұрын
Olivia Butcher not exactly. It means to boil for a short period of time and then immerse in ice water. The ice water is part of what makes this different from just cooking it. Although I have to say boiling coins for 4 and a half minutes seems like a long time for blanching. Usually blanching is 1 to 2 minutes depending on what you're preserving.
@yourmajesty35693 жыл бұрын
Blanch is not fully cooking. To blanch is to very specifically boil for a brief time and then stop the cooking process.

Vegetable are good for almost every living creature! Gold fish will eat ANYTHING. But most people prefer to provide gold fish with peas, as it helps relieve constipation, and gold fish have A LOT of constipation.

Do you need to feed them this daily and can I save the pices of blanched veggies or no if yes I can then can I just feed it to them again or do i have to re-heat it?
@andrewesquivel5 жыл бұрын
It's not something that needs to be a primary part of their diet, but it's always nice to have as a supplementary part of their diet. You can definitely make a whole bunch at once, and whatever you don't feed you can freeze. I usually thaw them out when I take them out of the freezer. No extra work needed at that point. Just drop them in and you're good

Why do I need to cook the cucumbers?
@vanhor1235 жыл бұрын
To help make the cucumbers soft enough for the fish to eat, also helps the cucumber sink to the bottom of the tank allowing your snails/plecos, who eat most of the cucumber, to get to it. ALSO helps the freezing process for long-term storage.

@andrewesquivel6 жыл бұрын
Will Akers when people refer to the danger of overfeeding, they're referring to the idea that the fish won't eat all of the food, thus the food will sit there and rot. When it does this release is ammonia which is not good. You want to make sure everything gets eaten
