Knife Scales too slick, not enough grip??? Here is my not quite so scientific way to brighten scales but more importantly loosen up that outer layer of resin and gain all that grippy texture you want from micarta and g10. Enjoy!

FOR SCIENCE! Just found your video. I'm doing a few of these later. Glad you didn't slap ammonia in that mix!

Also ventilation is extremely important when you’re mixing even common household chemicals like that, for example - bleach and ammonia mix makes *chlorine gas* fumes and that can literally *kill* you… (I know you didn’t actually mix in ammonia with bleach, just using as an example)

well he mixed bleach and Rubbing alcohol which when combined creates chloroform lol. Definitely something you want to do outside

@@TDOLLA Well ventilated, if not outside and also with gloves. Bleach and chloroform is absorbed through skin and then your liver breaks it and gets it out however exposure to the dermal, inhalation and and swallowing, no matter if your liver takes care of it or not, exposes you to cancerogens. Increases the possibility of mainly bladder and lower GI tract cancer. It's absorbed by mammals incredibly quickly, which is why it works as anesthetic like that *snaps finger* No need to increase your exposure to it by dipping in your fingers and swirling around..

I'm really glad to have found a video that involves lightening up the scales prior to dying. I've got an olive green Brazen and I thought I was SOL with regard to taking it from baby puke to dark blue or purple. They aren't that more textured micarta like yours, but a really smooth kind. I'm hopeful your method will still help me. Other videos have shown great results, but I knew I'd have to have them lighter prior to trying to get what I want. Thank you!

How did it go? I'm gonna dye my micarta soon, worried about ruining them or messing up the structural integrity

@@Gelattoh you won't mess up the structural integrity that much I can say. What color are they now? If you mess up and don't like the color remember that you can always go with black.

@@Gelattoh so same as mine! What color are you wanting to dye? If you do want black, a complimentary green shade, rich brown or gray I'd say give it a try without doing the whole stripping/bleaching process. Those should work with that base color fairly well. If you don't like it then you can do that step and redye. Red or orange no way, must strip it. I'm wanting purple, so I feel like I can't just go straight to dye.

Next time maybe try sanding the micarta a bit beforehand, might pull some of that finish off and expose some more fibers

what happens if you not heat up the mixture? It works slower or do not work at all?
@UrbanWoodsman87
@UrbanWoodsman87 Жыл бұрын
Having the mixture hot helps it Breakdown that outer layer of of resin so that the fiber can be brightened and lifted a bit for texture.

You confirmed some of my thoughts. I blacked some G10 scales for my beretta. Wanna try for a "wood" tone. I suspected either bleach or peroxide. Bleach is likely the best way to go. The oxy and borax didnt seem to help in your case but I liked the "used" look it gave the scales. Wouldnt take much to darken them if you ever wanted. Appreciate the time spent!

Do you know if g10 works the same?
@UrbanWoodsman87
@UrbanWoodsman87 2 жыл бұрын
It does but not as well. Many g10 scales are very heavy on the epoxy and it can be more difficult to re color.

Yes. It typically takes around 70% of the color from the scales.

I did not because the hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol stabilizes it. One has to truly know their chemistry.
