Best tutorial I've seen on shading. A lot of the videos I've seen are the people just talking about how to shade, and not showing how they actually do it. I'm a visual learner...I need to see it being done. You can talk at my for hours on how to do something, but if I don't see you putting your words into practice, I won't retain one whit of what you were saying. Bravo! love it! And the music is extremely relaxing. Love it.

is it possible to hate it ? cause I draw and I'm kinda good at it. like sure I've got potential. the problem is I don't think I ever enjoyed doing it. The only reason I draw is because Im good at it. i absolutely love art but I don't think i love making art. Im majoring in art and I think Im making a mistake.

G....There is nothing wrong with what you are stating/feeling.....I have been a portrait artist...Painter for over 44 years. And I don't actually enjoy it....I have had this talent since the age of 7, and sold my first paining at that age, for $250....But I can honestly tell you that I absolutely don't enjoy drawing/painting.....Just because I can do it...And it comes so naturally to me, doesn't mean I enjoy it. Wow, you are the fist person I have ever heard who draws, but doesn't enjoy it....You're not alone...Just because you don't enjoy it, does not mean you have to stop....I haven't.....I can draw most things in less than half the time it takes for most to draw. like this 33 minuet forehead, for instance, that would normally take me, with my own technique about 5-10 maximun...I could take a standard #2 Dixon Ticonderoga pencil and a blending tool and come out with some awesome artwork. Yes, use other pencils, such a mechanical pencils if I need o draw thin intricate lines, since I am a professional and they need to be PERFECT.!!!!!.....And have dozens of graphite, charcoal , Rapidograph pens. You name it...I work with oils, acrylics and alkyds....But they are a pain to clean up after.....And is why I prefer portrait drawing. Just wanted you to know that professional artists, don't always enjoy what they do just because they are AMAZING at it.....Good luck to you...Keep it up!!! Peace :-)

I draw, its not patience, its the joy of doing something you love, it passes the time so fast. Once you start a drawing to finish you get so transfixed into it your whole world disappears.

animelover3083 Well I'm guessing it's because a mechanical pencil is consistently the same thickness, whereas a regular pencil has to be constantly sharpened to have a fine point. That's why I use one anyway :)

Other great blending tools are: Cotton wool balls (for larger areas), and my personal favorite: tissues, as you can fold them into the best shape for shading. Plus, did you know that you can use the Black and Greys from a colour pencil set to produce a black and white drawing? (this is the method I use) as I prefer colour to graphite pencils.

For me, the lesson wasn't so much how to shade realistically. The lesson was the dedication to the drawing. Like many people who have posted, I want to finish my drawings quickly, and they often disappoint me because they aren't as good as I would like them to be. This video has shown me that rushing through anything immediately leads to an inferior product. If it's worth drawing, it should be worth the time and the patience it requires. Thank you for showing me the right way.

The music is giving the drawing a sense of something slowing coming to life, a wonderful video. I am totally amazed how smooth and well toned and blended you created w cotton swab, when I was using a Chamois it was blochy and forget a blending stump it left streaks. How light of a pressure is used w the swab? Is the mechanical pencil a particular size like the various soft or hardness as the pencil? I would like to hear some narration instruction or is it in the time lasped video?

I should take this long, instead of finishing it in an hour :( .I'll try to take more time into my drawings, I can only improve with time, to think 3-5 years ago I would sit in the back of the room at my house only with a #2 pencil, drawing for 6 hours a big portrait, as big as a table! Drawing every single detail and trust me it was so great to draw every detail

Girl all you need is commitment! :) I am currently working on an extremely detailed pencil drawing using nothing but a 0.3 mechanical pencil and a piece of printer paper, and it's going amazingly well! I've even been using my fingers to shade and blend, although, I think I'm gonna use a cotton swab from now on, that seems less messy lol. Trust me, you don't have to have special equipment to create beautiful art, you only need the time and inspiration :)

@hobisdimples94

I've never really been one for diverse/expensive art tools, I just like to work with the minimum amount, or whatever I have on hand. Whether it's watercolor painting or pencil drawings, I find that it's best to start out simple and ONLY get the bare minimum of tools and supplies you need, so that you don't overwhelm yourself. As you grow as an artist, you can begin to see what tools you might want to consider or what works best, but like I said, begin with what you have on hand and practice as much as you can! Art often intimidates me as well, and starting a new project is sometimes a hassle. However, it is ALWAYS rewarding to accomplish any type of artistic endeavor, and you will only get better with practice. As someone with no formal artistic training, I think the best way to learn is by doing and teaching yourself. Good luck, and remember there's no time like the present! ^-^

I promise that I am not an evil internet troll, just offering a thought as a professional portrait artist. You can get a more dramatic effect (darker darks, smoother blends) in a fraction of the time with charcoal.(meaning-this entire drawing-not just forehead-rendered to at least this level of skill, apx. same size honestly takes me around 30 min. Not bragging just offering a material comparison) I know that charcoal is intimidating to some artists, but with practice it is superior.

I think it can to a degree, as long as the passion for art is there, and of course, practice and push yourself everyday, the unfamiliar teaches you so much, especially when you return to drawing things that you are more comfortable with.

You probably don't know how much I needed this video. Most of the how-to-portrait-videos I've watched are either timelaps / speedpainting style, just the sketching, or they use different art media (like watercolour, acryl,...). I'm practicing pencil portraits for 15 days now, and there hasn't been a single day I haven't beat myself up over how long it takes me to blend the skin. 10 minutes in and I haven't done half of the face, and I start to kick and hate myself.
