This was extremely helpful for me as I replaced the turn signal switch in my '98 Chevy Lumina. Wouldn't have known what to do otherwise. Thank you!

Did this job today on a 97 Lumina. Getting that steering wheel locking disc off was quite a job. Really struggled removing the c-clip without tabs. I finally found a right angle pick, and it did the job. Putting it back was even worse. Had to call a friend to come over an lend a third hand. The spring tension was wicked. Anyway I lucked out in one way. My problem was left turn signal would not latch on all the time, and when it did, it would not reset after the turn. After removing the steering wheel disc, I could see the left spring was broken. Took spring off replacement switch, and installed it on the old switch. I see your left spring in the video was missing altogether. Anyway all back together and works great. Thanks

Excellent walk-through on this. This car is not being do-it-yourselfer's dream, I thought this would be a nightmare, but the easy-to-follow, step by step instructions made it pretty darn breezy. AND everything worked great the first time; problem solved! Thanks so much for posting this!

Awesome video. Just replace mine using this guide. FYI...The big Orange wire (2 wires inside) is the VATS security system. You can bypass the system by finding the resistance of the chip in your key and install a resistor of that value (radio shack is easiest) to connect both wires together (from the under dash side not ignition side). You can also do this so you don't have to pay $20+ for a resistor key and get a $2 regular key.

Right on! Your video made it simple. Same exact process for 95-99 Cadillac Devilles. Thanks! Once I had everything apart, noticed some idiot had broke the turn signal canceling cam where the horn wire goes and instead of replacing the cam, he put a toothpick in with the horn wire to tighten it. It worked...ingenious but just plain lazy.

@0button0 If you are asking about the corroded wire, it is in the engine compartment drivers side. There is a fuse panel that has an open bottom. Unbolt it and check the bus bars underneath. There are most likely some wires that have lost their connection completely.

@a40caldon1 Are both your rear running lights out? That is very common for these cars, it is caused by a corroded wire. I should make a video showing how I fixed it...

Hi, what color wire is it?? And is it possible to overlay said burnt wire and test?? 97’ monte z34 3rd lamb works taillamp brake lights inop
@zcomputerwiz4 жыл бұрын
@@colbypelly9010 If I recall correctly, the issue is that the wire corrodes where it is connected to the fuse block in the engine compartment. It may or may not be easy to see depending on how badly it has corroded - the fuse block would have to be freed so that the wires on the bottom could be inspected.
@colbypelly90104 жыл бұрын
Hey, I found out that it is the switch causing my lights to go out. When holding the brakes and wiggling the switch my Taillamps will start to work! Checked the fuse box. No corrosion on mine! 97’ Monte Carlo z34 87,000KM

Shi Wheatley I had to push rather hard against it because it was spring loaded while keeping it even otherwise it would bind. Make sure it is properly aligned - it will only go in one way!
@zcomputerwiz9 жыл бұрын
+Shi Wheatley I just did this job again on a 97 (which is identical) and experienced the same problem. There is a tool 'tilt column spring compressor' that looks something like a 'U' bracket with a hole in the middle. A bolt with a coupler that has the same thread as the steering shaft goes through the hole and has a nut that can be tightened to push the locking plate down. From what I gather I got lucky with my 96 and had the steering wheel tilt in the perfect position that I could get it close enough by force without the tool.

PLEASE HELP ! At 3:59, the video says push the metal plate forward to gain better access to remove the metal retaining ring. But on my vehicle, the metal plate can't be pushed at all, and the metal ring is completely trapped between the metal plate and the steering shaft. There's no gap and no way to pry it out. How would a pro mechanic proceed from here ? .
@zcomputerwiz5 жыл бұрын
There is a steering wheel tilt spring compression tool that can be rented from parts stores, this should provide enough pressure to free the ring.

One part is missing from this... how do you treat the injuries caused by f***ing around with the airbag without disabling it first?????
@zcomputerwiz8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps pay a little attention to the first part of the video that says "WARNING airbags are dangerous disconnect your battery first" to avoid injuries?
@md650008 жыл бұрын
+zcomputerwiz  Just disconnecting the battery does not guarantee that the airbag will not deploy. The proper way to disable the airbags is to pull the fuse and then disconnect the airbags at the connections under the dash.

@kennethmathis-simpson15016 жыл бұрын
For those that are still wondering, the button for your hazards usually connect to the switch for your blinker (if your hazards button is on your column. If it’s somewhere else in your car, you can disregard this). In the early 90’s GM cars/trucks like this, you’ll take a Phillip’s screwdriver, unscrew the screw in the center of the hazards button, and pull it out - DO NOT LOSE any of the pieces for your hazards button, put all of them somewhere safe, preferably all together in a box or container, so you can reuse them later

I turned the connector sideways and pushed it through with the wires. It might bind a little, but should make it all the way through :) If not, try using a straightened metal coat hanger to push it down.

You GLOSS over removal of the second ring clip instead of stating the proper tool to get it off. Picks and screwdrivers do not work with plate pushing against it. Been on that clip for over half an hour and it is no closer to being out of the way then when I started. There is a compress tool that pushes the serrated plate down for easy clip removal. It is 15 bucks at AutoZone or you can rent it there.
