I think they likely tried this. I'm sure it got messy and most, likely (as you point out) did not survive for long.

I'm sorry my brain just can't wrap around the ribs. Do you remove them completely or do they hang out and how would they hang out and what would they hang off of?

As far as I've understood you crack them open to get access to the lungs. Between the ribs are the intercostal muscles so even if you crack open the ribs I believe these muscles and it's connective tissues would keep the broken ribs from going anywhere.
