Really good video... You can make up a lot of time in breaking. In the last year I started to concentrate on Breaking and since then I am really fast... Just finished P4 at the Wintercup in Lonato (out of 70 drivers)

Hey Ryan, could you please make a video on how to set your breaking points during & before a race (at quali or practice)? Because I've having serious issues in the last 2 years.. every time I arrive at a corner I forget where did brake the last time!

Hi Ryan, thank you for these video tutorials - they are excellent for amateur kart racers who’s development is highly constrained by extremely limited time! One question: is what you are explaining for modulating the kart using the brake till the apex of the corner what they refer to as “trail-braking”?
@NorbergNation

Fantastic info's, and very grateful because not every kart top driver are willing to share knowledge. Could you do a video on how to save your front tire and still do fast lap especially when you have to carry the same tire to the next day, due to rule ( ICP Cup or Gold Cup )... Thank you

Hi Ryan, thx for the video its awesome and answered lots of my questions. Apart from the braking technique that you mentioned above, I wonder in what circumstances would you use trail breaking in go-karting? would be great you can answer that question for me too, thx a lot!

I'm obviously very late to this party, but excellent video, Ryan, and thank you! I drive a shifter kart and obviously it has front brakes...should I also trail brake with my kart, or is the information you share here just for karts with the brake on the rear axle? I have heard opinions that you should just brake in a straight line and others say that you should trail brake a kart with front brakes. It can be very confusing at best...

Yesterday I've driven a rotax max kart for the first time in my life. And I've only driven 15 hp rental karts before so the speed difference was kind of shocking for me. The main problem was the braking. Every time I tried to break hard i ended up locking the wheels and just sliding forward or spining, so I had to switch to very genltle approach which costed me a lot of time loss comparing to the experienced drivers. What could be the reason for all those lock-ups(unfortunately I dont have a video)? Is it possible that initial braking was too hard or its just about not releasing the brakes quick enough? Anyway it was a great experience!
@NorbergNation
@NorbergNation 3 жыл бұрын
The normal problem for most people is applying the pressure on the brakes incorrectly. What is most likely happening is that as you get closer to the corner you hit the brakes harder. When you are going slower it is much easier to lock them up and spin out. You might think you are hitting them hard initially into the corner but it probably isn't hard enough. The braking zone should have almost immediate lock up pf the rear tires when you apply the brakes, then slowly back off of them as you get closer to the corner.

Taking the brake up to apex. How much pressure do you use as you're approaching the apex after the heavy braking?
@NorbergNation
@NorbergNation 2 жыл бұрын
It depends but you should look at is as the hardest hit is when you hit the brake. As you get closer to the apex you are slowly getting off of the brake. At the apex you should be off of the brake.

hi Ryan I am your 2 years fan and I practiced myself on x30 as an amateur for 2 years. This braking problem confuses me till now. 1. how to you sense the lock ratio, by rear unstable movement or by body sense 2. if by body sense, I am not that sensitive how do I know I reach the max brake efficiency; 3. the theory book says some 0% to 15% slip ratio is the best on the straight brake, so as you says, is the process like 100% lock firstly and then release to 15% lock is the best way? or if we human cannot know its about 15%, do we tend to release more for less lock is better or keep some lock has the max brake efficiency. I am really keen to know about your experience.Thank you
@NorbergNation
@NorbergNation 3 жыл бұрын
I feel the brake by both the rear instability and by my foot. You have to just lock the rear brakes up over and over to feel the difference and to understand the feeling. I don’t think we can feel a 15% difference. But I know that as I slow the kart down, it is easier to lock the rear tires. So as you go slower in the corner you have to release the brake slowly to maintain a high level of brake pressure without locking up the rear tires. I hope that helps
@luobingxing
@luobingxing 3 жыл бұрын
@@NorbergNation that is helpful, thank you Ryan. I don't have the feeling about how much is locked, so I will probably use a 120fps camera to visualize the tyre alongside my pressing.

When you say that you are off the gas and brake for a split second mid corner, isn't better to try and overlap gas and brake a tiny bit to try and keep more grip on the rear and a smoother initial throttle application?
@NorbergNation
@NorbergNation 4 жыл бұрын
No. When you apply the throttle the inside rear tire will sit down the the kart will go straight. It is better to have a part of the corner where you are off both pedals to help the kart rotate.

@thomasdevald7106
@thomasdevald7106 3 жыл бұрын
too early braking and too long braking time zone too,so you loose a speed and you have no acceleration dinamics in corner. better try one short low brake and then a few small and hard braking hits before corner ( so you stay in race line possition ) and just you come into the corner,hit acceleration pedal and get maximum possibily speed when you come out from corner and surely be sure that you have enough speed that you stay on the track,not too much to fly out off the track.
