I play 3 courses most of the time and all have tiny greens so it’s always aim at the middle unless there’s real danger on one side of the green. Perhaps more tips on lag putting since you asked. You guys seem to cover everything though 👍🏻

Generally middle of the green for the most part. More GIR is a key area of the game that could do with some improvement! Would generally always be going at the flag from 60-120 yards unless there is some obvious trouble ie. Water

I’m in the low to mid 80’s consistently on my home course but this is still helpful since I struggle at the 200+ yard fairway shots. I also know these things but great to hear more opinions and options on shot/club selection.

Where is the pin located and what are my distances. If the flag is at the back 125 yds - then an attacking wedge, as it goes 116 yds for me, where as a 9 would go long. Same distance but the flag is at the front then the 9 iron to get me putting. Keep the tips coming it is strengthening my game thank you.

Unfortunately there is no real secret to lag putting. Yes you need to account for conditions, but ultimately it comes down to feel. You can't "tell" someone how hard to hit it, just have to put the hard work in🤷‍♂️

Great video guys. As someone with some physical limitations, I have had to accept that I cannot hit the ball as far as many others. I have lost over two club lengths worth of distance and now rely heavily on my short game. What I will say is that by accepting my limits and playing smarter, I am happier with my game and enjoying it a lot more and by putting more effort into my short game my handicap has really not increased that much. Main thing is I still love the game. 👍🏻

Played my first round of golf in over 2 years after having to deal with a ton of back issues. I made sure to put some work in on the range before going out, watched a bunch of your videos on how to fix my common misses and made sure to remember that I'm not a pro so just have fun. I've always averaged in the mid to high 90's with my best round being a 93 but today I made smart club choices, smart shots, and minimized my risk as much as possible and shot an 89 on a tough course I'd never played. You and your golf knowledge have given me great confidence, thank you and your team Mark!

Hope you don't mind comments on old videos. I've been watching your videos for years and this one is timely to revisit. I'm 61 and hit my Driver on average 210, but spray it all over with a hard pull being the most common miss. (My longest drive was a 258 yard hard pull because pulls go farther and it skittered between the trees.) Because of lack of consistency, I hit my 5-wood off the tee most times and consistently hit it 185-190 off the tee. That worked so well I traded my miserable 5-iron for a 9-wood and hit that consistently 155-165 off the deck (shotscope V3 data). So now if I've got 200 approach I hit my 9-wood and really practice hitting 50-60 yard wedge shots a lot. I'm super confident hitting a 3/4 50° gap wedge 75 yards, and my 56° SW I hit a super confident 50% swing to 50 yards to within 15 ft. I have to depend on this wedge game because I'm not long. I've broke 90 maybe a half dozen times and none in the last year or so. I know I should be capable of doing so more often but I'm struggling with several blow-up holes every round - trips and worse. I average 34 putts per round so the blow-ups are usually a cascade of mis-hits. Recently I picked up a 5-hybrid which I changed the loft to 25° to become my 150 yard club. I'm hitting that much better than my 5-iron or 6-iron.

These videos are great! Golf is a funny game. I've shot from 80 up to 101 this year, on the same course from the same tees. Last week I comfortably hit a 5i from 190y to the middle of the green and had a chance at eagle (made birdie). The very next hole I flared my 5 iron 25y right on my approach from 185y, bladed my pitch into a bunker, duffed my bunker shot, and two putted. Life as a handicap (14 for me) golfer is a constant adventure.

This vido perfectly illustrates why most of us struggle at golf. You said you need to be able to attack from 100 yards, but that's assuming the weekend golfer has better control with a shorter club. Obviously the chances of hitting the green or placing the ball improve at shorter differences regardless of skill level, but I think that you should make a video on playing in from 60-70 yards because that's the range where no one is worrying that they don't have the swing speed to get to target and it's imperative to hone in on what you can do to make sure that you're striking the ball correctly.

Managing the 200 yd, getting a 4 wood that could hit off fairway, learning my shot shape, 20 yd cut, has helped me score more on par 5’s. Last round hit the green in 2 on par 5 from 210 to 25 feet. Then made par after missing 2 foot putt. Need the short putt lesson now

I am that golfer! I've been playing for 37 years on and off. I just play with friends for fun on a variety of courses. I usually break 90 but sometimes fail. I've watched your videos for years but this series on breaking 90 and the videos on strokes gained have made me rethink my play. My last three rounds have been 88, 86 and 84, on courses that I have shot over 90 on before. I can hit a 3 wood 200 yards plus and a 4 iron 170 to 180 yards, my wedge play from 100 yards is straight to a slight pull. Chipping around the green (like you bruh) is the weakest part of my game, putting usually averages out at 2 putts per hole or better over 18. I would like to know if you have any tips more on the mental side of keeping a good score going, how do you maintain concentration? I often find that I flag around holes 12, 13 and 14 and a couple of 7s there can really screw up a good score. It's a tough game but that's why I love it. Keep up the good work, cheers bruh.

Totally agree with the message in this post - expecting that your short game will save every green miss is unrealistic. Improvement in hitting GIR will lower your score quick than short game improvement in my view

I am a Break 90 kinda guy. I attack from 220 yards. I hardly hit the green if I am past 180 yards. Unless there's water around the green I feel like not going for it is a wasted shot. Especially since I can shank a pitching wedge just as easy as a 5 wood. Great vid Guys! And thanks for playing James in a 3 hole contest!

Excellent video. Type and length of course is also a huge factor. I play several courses around me. The main course I play is pretty long and challenging. From the back tees I struggle to break 90. From the middle tees I usually shoot around 85. Then there is a shorter, easier course I play where I regularly break 70.

“Your weakness is making you attack.” Exactly. That is the fact that makes it tough. That is why those “in the scoring zone” shots are so important and frankly, difficult for the once a week golfer.

Good concept and ideas - agree with the end debate about how to improve incrementally - My strategy for each hole is to look what I need to get to 150 yards and then ideally 100 yards and similar to you guys assess where the danger is if looking to attack - I've got a reliable short game so missing greens either drop offs or bunkers doesn't faze me and look to get up and down most times. By the way Rory has just gone 2 over gross for 27 holes in Morocco so has got his game back!!!

There's a whole stack of (good) stuff out there about the golf swing which I have found really useful in trying to build my own swing but this is about "playing golf" which is what many of us perhaps need to focus more on. Would love to see more of this kind of thing on different types of holes.

Valuable information, if I could putt more consistently I would improve each round by about 5 shots. I love to hit my driver but will at some stage try to hit it hard and slice one out of bounds. Very easy to analyze where my game is rubbish and I know I can do better but I have yet to break 90 ( have shot 90 often ) . I pretend I am on 18 and try for a bogey on every hole, I get a few pars but the double and triple bogies still get creep in to cancel out the better holes. Bad shots knock my confidence and I then feel I am mucking up the fun side of the game for the others in our four. I play better when I go out to practise on my own so I guess nerves and a lack of confidence kicks in when I play in a group on a Saturday. Long story but that's my current game. I am determined to play better as I have been told a few times I should be on a mid teens handicap.

Deffo mostly about short game. I've played off around 5 for 30 years and I've never hit the ball that well at all. Every other ball game apart from golf makes sense (until recently that is, now watching Shawn Clement and it makes perfect sense now). If I was 130 ish to 200 yards out it would be a duffed shot followed mostly by a good chip and 1 putt. Great to watch as usual MC :-)

More of these videos guys , approach play course strategy . I play everyday on breaks , I see the biggest problem with average golfers is not so much the errant drives, and the 50 yards in they go alright , it’s between 200 in to 50 the dispersion sideways , hitting into trouble or trying to go at the greens from rough or out of the trees , watching you guys hitting from rough or Matt pulling off great shots through tree gaps is a skill people under estimate , I truly believe if you really are interested in lowering scores you need to be hitting off the fairways to ensure the best chance of ball contact , concentrate on straight ball flights and forget about distance chasing and shot shaping on purpose needs lots of practice to gain control of the shape to any degree of accuracy , skill takes time and practice , we all watch your muppet tours with great enthusiasm , but I think you forget you have great skill for recovery shots and you guys have short games that get you up and down , your approaches I’m just gonna hit a little cutty one with a 6 iron , or I’m just gonna hit a little chippy 9 iron and knock it down under the wind , these are skills the average guy shooting 90-100 just doesn’t have in the bag , mark and Matt recently did a vid swinging the average 85 mph swing speed and even with their ball striking consitency and short game skill found it very difficult to play bogey golf , certainly better club choices would help with less longer irons and more hybrids in the higher end of the bag , keep your approaches to a distance and clubs that you can hit straight with enough height to get it to stop on the greens you play on , practice chippping and putting , course management can save you many strokes a round , instead of just hitting it as far as you can as straight as you can , look at where you want to be hitting your next shot from ,distance angle up the fairway or into the green , where on the green gives you the least break or an uphill putt and try and get it near there , in practice I’ve found the best way to improve is practice like you play , hit one or two shots with every club , ie: driver , 3 wood long iron mid iron wedge and chip exactly as if you were playing golf , you only get one chance on the course so unless your working on swing mechanics there’s no point hitting 40 7 irons at one flag , hit to different targets with different clubs like you were playing , spend 65% of time on your pitching chipping and putting and you will see big gains quickly .

Im a 57 year old , 22 hc. Have broken 90, a dozen times in the last two years, playing about 30 rounds a year. My putting ave is 1.8 rearly three put. Im not greatest at driving, but can hit my 3 wood ave about 170m. Chipping ave, sometimes good sometimes bad. I think my approach shots are the key to me getting a good round. If im hitting the greens on par 3's and parring then i'll be there or there abouts for an 80 score.

I’m a 21 handicap, I find that my main issue with breaking 90 is getting off the tee. My best rounds have been where I’ve had minimal if any 3 off the tee. I’ve broken 90 twice and these rounds felt fantastic. I’ve had lessons with my driver where I get good distance and dispersion but as soon as I’m about to hit that first tee shot my mind goes from the lessons to hit it as far as you can

A very good comment was made - which hopefully wasn't lost out there. I was concerned the quality of strike by you all didn't give a true reflection of the golfer aiming to break 90. Your face-to-path will be so much purer. But Mark said something to the effect of - "our strikes are of a golfer on a good day". This is worth being reiterated so golfers stop trying the 'Hollywood' approach and losing a shot here and there. Great video.

I liked your conversation at the end. I had that same talk with my Dad about getting stronger to hit it farther. Either gain power by increased mobility or strength. He doesn't want to do that and keeps looking for technique changes to get more speed. I think he has some opportunities to gain speed by better technique but he's over 70 and carries it 230 on a good hit. You have a couple of choices: increase mobility, increase strength, get younger. I do powerlifting and golf. I think keeping strength through lifting as you get older and less mobile, etc is the best thing you can do for your golf game. What's the worst thing that can happen? -- you get too strong ? Thanks....

Great content! Thanks to these videos, I'm the guy who talks his way around while my playing partners look at me with a face that says "does he think he's Tiger or something?" My Dad however, is the golfer that says "I'm in the rough stuck between 6 trees 170 metres out. My 3 wood goes 170 metres- I'll hit that." The dumb look he gives me when I ask if he thought about chipping out or under back to the fairway...

Maybe you could mix it up a little more as not all amateurs hit a 6 iron 150 yards. I play off 19 but I hit my 9 iron around the 150 Mark (not always but that’s why I play off 19). Maybe one of you could play at one amateur speed then the next a little faster and the last faster again. Love your videos and I hope you don’t think this is a criticism. Over the right over the left is one of the best things I’ve ever heard in coaching so helpful.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would think that the swing speed you guys are using is a bit slow. I consistently break 90, but swing a LOT faster than a 6 iron for 150. Either way, I really like the idea of identifying when to attack. I probably attack way too often. Good stuff, keep it up boys

At our course we have several holes with water hazards varying from 50 yds to 1yd from the front of greens I find that 18-25 handicappers tend to play up as near to the water hazard as possible despite frequently going to far and into hazard. I also see them going for a 190/200yd shot to a green with a water hazard in front of it with a club that if they hit perfect then they make the green and anything shy of perfect is looking at a penalty. I asked one guy (19 handicapper) why not lay up to 50yds or similar (as he usually ends up in the hazard) and he responded that sometimes he makes it. 18-25 handicappers play the shot as if it will be perfect despite results proving that it usually isn't for them.

At what level does distance control become the most important part of approaches? I see so many hit a shot online to a green that looks ok and they are happy. When you get up to the green it 15yards short of the pin and they are still happy. Yet the same person pulls it 10 yards left and is ready to snap a club. From what I see pro put so much importance on distance control

I'm loving the breaking 90 series. For my game; 200 yards in is a 5 wood that goes 180 to 150 depending on whether it's a good or bad day, either way my next club is a 58° wedge and I'm happy about that. 150 yards is a punchy running 22° hybrid or a smoking 7 iron depending on into or with the wind, I have no real love for my 5 or 6 iron so I tend not to play them. 100 yards is a PW all day long at the flag unless some bastard has put it close to the edge of the green, then I play for middle of the green. My normal thought process for a par 4 and 5 hole says close to the green in two or three (70 yards or in I don't care about distance inside 70), 58° wedge onto the green at the flag, one or two putts for par or bogie and I'm playing too my 18 handicap.

Sometimes distance isn't the problem. When that's the case, if I lose a shot off the tee or have a rough hole, its feeling like now I need to make up some ground. Now that middle of the green shot needs to be a closer shot and the pressure goes up. It's almost how do I keep it under control when my strikes arent perfect or I'm struggling off the tee. I know you've heard it but even with the less distance, you all are still calling your shots and hitting it there. If I'm that accurate, I dont care what club I'll shoot decent or at minimum break 90. Food for thought.

I understand the good golf day argument: yes the day your average golfer breaks 90 he tops it less... but still tops a few. At least I did at least 6 times when accidently breaking 90 in september. It's just those tops still flew and roll a bit without too much penalty to the score. No water/OB, trees or high rough. Also it did not affect my mood and I was able to recover and hit a good average shot after that. So bad shot will happen when first breaking 90. But you have to manage them too.

as a 20 hcp, from 200 out I´m with Dan all day long, taking a 5 wood, just because the percentage of decent strikes from the fairway or fluffy lie is significantly higher with a 5 wood than a 3 wood.

I'm exactly the same I'm taking 5 wood or my 4 hybrid. I don't think many 20 handicappers can hit a 3 wood off the fairway with much confidence.I hit my 5 wood 200-210 and hybrid 185-200. Which one I take would depend on where the trouble is; I'm not hitting my 5 wood if a slice gets me in trouble.

@@chrislewis7 my miss with 5 wood is usually left, either a draw or pull hook, due to overturning my hands. If I can keep them neutral it usually goes fairly straight.

@@alanwaterworth6464 Thanks. I'm actually left handed and my problem is the opposite, I sometimes get too cautious in my swing and try to place it down the middle and I don't turn my hands over enough.

I understand some yardages are a fiddle but isn't it just easier the closer a player is? Interesting point on the pros avoiding a yardage but you can afford to give up 30 to avoid 70 if you are good at 100. But in the AM game I don't see many folks that are better from further away over 1000 shots.

This video highlights the importance of finding the best clubs for YOU in the distance ranges of 175-200 & 200-225 yards. Whether it's 5,7&9 woods and or 3/4/5/6/7 hybrids, finding these 'best & optimal' 3 to 5 clubs in this range is critical to scoring.

If I'm really trying to get under 90 I'm not trying to hit 3w off the deck, I'm laying up with a 7/6 iron maybe 5. Golf is hard!😓

I'm pulling my 4H from that distance. It'll go about 200. I want to avoid the right side. I tend to push draw it so it'll likely miss that bunker. If it lands short (depending upon the wind) it could roll up and I'll still have a 40 footer. 3W off the deck is a no go unless for some reason the ball got teed up on the grass. I'm just not good with it off the deck. 5W? I've compared distance with the 4H and it's a why bother? 150 - attack with a 7 iron (it's 29.5 degrees). 100 yds - attack GW. The question is always if the shot is executed well. If I could only keep the ball in play off the tee....

I think the point that people are missing with the whole "Well you guys are hitting good shots" comments is that if you're hitting it 100 yards offline, toping it or fatting it 30 yards, it doesn't really matter where you're aiming, because it's not going where you're aiming. You plan for a decent strike and how you're going to hit/miss - not factoring in that you might top it 15 yards.

Keeping it on the fairway keeps me below 90...but so does whacking it when the fairway is wide and gives me room for error.

I think my biggest problem is I’m see the potential to be shooting in the 70s 80s but I’m usually hovering around 90. And it’s a let down and i get frustrated and lose my confidence and then i start getting extra wild. I lose most of my shots off the tee and early in the round in my short game because i haven’t warmed up properly.

I attack no matter what yardage unless there is danger of a drop like water.. but my philosophy from beyond 200 yards is get is close or on the green, chip and putt if I have to, and I bet If I were to make 10 chips from 10 yards away vs 10 layed up shots from say 80 yards, I would chip it closer than hitting that 80 yard shot on average. So Attack !!

In 2018, this is the last year I can find the information on, Tiger shot a 62 and a 78, and these seem about the norm for a year. Clearly this will be over a variety of courses in a variety of weather conditions. However I think the idea that all the pros shoot constant scores is a myth. They have good and bad days just as much as us. Just their worse day is about as good as my best, but they are playing a course about 1000 yards longer.

If you struggle to break 90 (as I do), you probably also struggle hitting a 3W (as I do). When you're 180 yards out, you lay up in front of the greenside bunkers, using a hybrid or an iron. As much as I appreciate your content Mark, this series is not working (for me). You, Dan and Coach are all very skilled golfers, but you can't play like you're an 18 or 20 handicap golfer, it's just not possible (in my opinion). If you really want to do a "Break 90" series, bring along a couple of 18-20 hcp players, and talk us trough their game. Best regards.

Guys love the channel and content but think your yardages for higher handicap is not a true reflection of younger or newer golfers. I carry my 3 wood according to one years worth of data 240, but am obviously having dispersion issues. I think personally you need to play taking into account dispersion
