Come along with Matt and Tim as they break down a new lake! These guys have dropped into a new fishery with zero information and immediately start putting the pieces together to catch quality fish with ease. It really is easy if you know what to look for!
While this lake didn't seem to have giant fish in it, the guys immediately figured out how to catch top quality fish for that lake. Along the way they share how they choose spots, how mapping can help, and the mindset behind their bait selection. This information will help you build a pattern on any lake, anywhere!
Below you'll find links to the exact baits and equipment the guys fished throughout the evening. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

The sound of the water lapping on that aluminum hull, that unique sound was a part of the soundtrack of my youth. Not to mention, that lake looks like quintessential Michigan.

When the grass is topped out on the surface, it just limits the type of baits you can throw 👍

The difference in lakes is fascinating. I recently found a quarry that is loaded with big bass. I have never seen so many 5+ pounders and some that where twice as big. But I haven't been able to even get a dink to bite on this place, not even when they are feeding. I can walk 100 yards to another lake and catch fish no problem one after another, but none are over 3 pounds.

I enjoyed watching you guys catch fish. Especially because it was 27 degrees this morning when I left for work. BUT it seems you got sidetracked and never went into any depth about how to break down a new or unknown lake/body of water - except for mentioning “pockets”. But honestly you did what we usually do, we look for structure, weeds or grass, and drop offs. Anyway tight lines!

Would you guys consider that body of water to be on a fall pattern already? How far north are you guys? Started noticing the nights dropping a few degrees here in GA and wondering if that’s enough to warrant a change in fishing patterns.

Man- fishing from a real bass boat is a whole different world- could you imagine trying to break down a lake like this using a kayak powered by nothing but you and a paddle? It would e impossible. We have to choose a small section of the lake and break it down- one section at a time. And if you happen to choose the wrong section for that day- tough luck bud. This is why I love little rivers and creeks- the current moves you through the fishery and you have a chance to fish it all as you go. If you find a good section- stop and make the best of it. The only issue I have with this is the logistics of getting dropped off and having a vehicle waiting where I'll get out- it's not always easy to get everything setup and find someone who will come pick you up wherever you leave your truck and take you up stream to drop you off. In fact, that's the one thing that keeps me from fishing daily- finding someone who will do this for me. But on the days when I can't find anyone- I usually go hit a local 20 acre lake where I can easily paddle back to my truck. Try patterning a 20 acre lake- you have to get really general and not be very specific with your pattern, because the chances that there is another bank or stump or whatever just like this one- very low. That said- who cares about a pattern- you can fish the whole thing- you don't need a pattern. They're somewhere in the lake- that's all you need to know.
