Took my 12 year old son fishing yesterday to a notoriously tough fishery (Lake Hopatcong in NJ) we got a few great topwater bites first thing in the morning then it just shut off, completely. We were definitely on the struggle bus. We started throwing everything I could think of, then I eventually rigged us both up with some jigs (he's great with a baitcaster but had to show him how to use a jig) and we tore into em, using techniques and fishing the areas I've learned from y'all....that knowledge turned the day around and it was literally the best day I've ever had at that lake, and honestly one of the best days we have had in a long time...thanks for all the great content you guy's consistently share....it makes a difference.

@@MultiXMeGa that would be a hard lake to kayak in during this time of year. Even in a boat, I struggle from all the wake. Musconetcong, Budd lake, cranberry lake and several others will be more kayak friendly this time of year. Hopatcong is pretty damn big and it's a hard lake to fish.

I’ve been studying the TB videos for the last 2 years on jig fishing and I finally developed confidence in a buckeye lures G-man Ballin out jig and man wow. It feels like they are chewing on this thing lol. My favorite is a black and blue 3/8oz with a Googan baits Krackin craw in ocachobee craw. Thank you guys. The best advice I think I got was ;if you want to learn jig fishing, only take your jig rod and nothing else. Lock it in your hand and don’t put it down until it clicks.

I have zero confidence in a jig, but I have one tied on right now & it's going to stay on rest of summer! Need to learn how to fish one. I literally just tied it on last weekend so perfect timing on your vid! I do fish swing head jigs alot & have ton of confidence in those. Just not standard jig. I love your channel. I have been watching you and Tim for a couple years now. I bought a fishing kayak 2 years ago and my confidence is really struggling. when I can go anywhere on the lake, and paddle around looking at my 2D sonar it really opened a lot of opportunities for me. But with that being said, I'm struggling to catch fish. you guys have taught me alot about what areas to look for. Your videos on where bass go in certain times of year are awesome. now its just putting in the time on the kayak and catching a few to get the confidence up. keep up the good work guys!

I'd forget the sonar for now and just pick apart the shallow waters. There's always fish that stay shallow and are easier to catch than finding ledges and rockpiles in the middle of nowhere

Matt, its super funny cause I swear you made this video almost for me lol because I am one of those guys that 100% knows I should throw a jig and I even had the right idea of when and where but literally never have caught a single fish on one. Closed I came was a blow up near the shoreline on a retrieve but never even hooked the fish. I was super curious though and you rarely ever cover it in any of your videos but with casting rods and jig fishing do you find the Gear Ratio making any impact overall? Thanks for all the advise.

Not jig related, but since it's newest video maybe you will see this. I have a power shot combo for you to try. Jigs / Dropshot make up a large portion of my fishing, so I've tried a lot of things. I know in previous vids you guys said you like the 6'10M Expride for power-shotting when it's not in super heavy cover. I've used both the A and B model as well as a bunch of other rods and I think I finally have the ultimate combo figured out and want you to try it. Matt will like this because it's an MBR, lol. Currently I'm running a Conquest 843c with a Metanium Shallow Water edition reel, reel is running 10-12lb Sunline FC Sniper... only hook I run is 2/0 Owner Covershot HD hook. Lots to throw on it, but we all know how good the MM 6" Fat roboworm is so I have that on about 1/2 the time. Either way just give it a try, it blows the pants off the Exprides and many other rods. Obviously you might not have a SW edition Metanium, but I found 70 size reels make all the difference with this combo... so an Aldebaran or equivalent will do.

Jigs have been my fav for over a decade now... which in combination with these videos has resulted in me owning too many jig rods. As far as what you said, the only thing I disagree with is the compact pitching jig. I use 70% Dirty Jigs stuff too and have for a long time, but that jig has always caused problems for me. I'm pretty sure it comes down to the hook bite. I've just resorted to throwing the standard finesse jig if I need it, or I'll cut down the skirt for the smaller profile of the normal casting jig.

Is jig fishing viable from the bank? At the moment I don't have a boat and ive stuck with Texas rig stick baits, trick worms, flukes, etc.. and wacky rigs, frogs... stuff like that. Jigs are my confidence bait, I've been bass fishing for 30y and probably 60-75% of the bass I've caught have been on a jig, I always have a heavy rod with 65lb braid rigged up with a jig. I never have much luck with that "go to" color. If you're learning how to jig, get you two colors: white and black/blue. They seem to hammer the white jig more than any other color. I almost always have a heavy movement trailer. If you're only getting one color, get a pearl white and you will catch fish.

An Extra Heavy is not what I would want to use with treble hooks on top water. A medium action with more bend into the back bone is better for keeping trebles pinned and not ripping them out.

Definitely the worst part of my fishing is my jig fishing. Always wanted to get better. Hard to get a feel for it with slow bites and limited time

@@Just_A_Name14 get a green pumpkin jig with a chunk trailer and dip the claws in chartreuse. Then go to a bluff wall where the river channel swings next to it and pitch it up against the wall. I had ZERO confidence until earlier this summer and now it’s hard for me to put it down.

There's something wrong with the Dirty Jigs compact pitchin jigs in the hematoma color, I ordered some in both 3/8 and 1/2. All the 3/8 size were fine but the 1/2 sizes were wrong, I got 2 1/2 jigheads that were right and the rest were 3/8 size jigheads packed into a 1/2 labeled package. Even the replacements TW is sending are 3/8 size jigheads in a 1/2 size labeled package.
