The fashion industry is worth 20+ billion but all the money goes to the top positions, [super]models and celebrities and rarely trickles downs. People who work in fashion are so poorly paid, especially in the big cities where the cost of living is extortionate - London, New York, Paris and Milan. You are not paid proportionally to what you need to survive. Unfortunately, that is what their market rate is worth and what makes fashion such a difficult career path to choose whether it's designing and creative or head office. It's also one of the few career paths where luck and who you know is a more important factor than in other industries, not just hard work.

i love how this video is talking about people who love fashion but do not need to come from a privileged family. Yet it contradicts when Kane talks about how many internships he's had and how they were unpaid. If you come from a family that is not wealthy how do you afford working for free?? Fashion is about luxury and luxury equals money and that's just the sad truth.

Hello, my name is Delfina I'm a 15 years old girl from Argentina and I dont really know if someone will take the time to read this but this video made me emotional in so many contexts because for me, fashion is the biggest way to express yourself even when words aren't enough. Just like Alexa said earlier, my parents are not supportive of me following anything related to this beautiful world as a career and it pains me so much because it is everything I really want 100% for sure in life. I would love to put my hands in work and create colored feelings and magical trends but I dont know how to strart to, and I'm also at the age where most of the important people of this industry started *which scares me to death*, + study abroad is my dream and I'd love to know if someone with enough experience could tell me some colleges around the world with a good way of teaching in this matter. Alexa, if you happen to read this *fingers crossed* you are my Jane Birkin and I truly adore you. thank you, Delfina x

Sometimes you just have to live for yourself and do what makes you happy.(except from breaking the law and stuff but I'm sure you know that haha!) Even if it's not what your parents think is best maybe you will gain motivation from trying to prove them wrong! :) I don't know about which collages to look at though, sorry! D: Good luck and all that jazz.

+Rem Winks That's true and I hate to be that overly-pessimistic person but in order to show that you are talented or passionate about your work you need a platform to showcase it first, and in fashion it's really tough to have that platform if you don't have a lot of contacts or come from a wealthy background. I think we have to thank social media for making it easier to get your name out there but it's still tough if you don't "mess with the right crowd".

This is so spectacular! I'm already getting the vibe that these videos will be the ones I'll be showing all those who ask me if I've gone crazy for studying journalism related to the fashion industry. As I've seen, it's crucial that the audience addresses the matters they wish to be responded, so here are my questions: Have you seen "The True Cost"? If so, how were the repercussions in the fashion industry? What plans does the fashion industry (the British, in particular) has when it comes to production, both materials and human resources? I believe the world can keep getting outstanding art through fashion, but we can all contribute to it being a more responsible matter.

If people are doing work for you, you should pay them. Especially now where the cost of living is so high in high-density cities. I've heard of multiple interns working at a single place for 6 months unpaid. People should be demanding more from their pseudo-employers too.

this received a lot of negativity. there are a lot of successful ppl directly involved in the industry that went to art school. they're not as highly paid or as well-known as supermodels or the elite designers, but that shouldn't even be your main focus. the reason you want in is bc it's your passion; that requires hard work, intelligence, and yes, you need to have connections, to be in touch with others that will help you. It's why internship is recommended before you start your career, so that you know what to do and how to get there and what you're actually getting yourself into.this industry also used to put thigh gaps and small waists on a pedestal and made it desirable, but they've breaken out and are now accepting all body types which is good. lastly, Alexa was a model, she was scouted at 15; I would use that to my advantage too.
