I feel like running a business in the fashion space is even harder because not only does your business rely on your entrepreneurial skills but your creativity will also make or break you

I am not even 13 yet, and i know that people see me still as a kid. Kids say they want to be an astronaut, ballerina, a princess, but they are just kids. Let me tell you I have not had a perfect life. I know other people have it a lot worse, but after everything I’ve gone through, I know by now, I have to do it. While I can, I’ve got to do it. One second you can be with your best friend, and the other second, your best friend passes away. One day your playing monopoly with your family, the other your mother is diagnosed with cancer. I promised my best friend that we would build a fashion empire. We were children obviously, foolish, young, still innocent. She passed away. I couldn’t be there with her. I moved schools, when my best friend needed me I ran away like a coward. I want to do this. I have to do this. I need to do this. For my friend, for my promise. I always say I never break a promise, and I mean it.

hey Irman, great talk - I really appreciate what you're doing and how much effort you put in BoF and educating fashion industry. This is also one of my goals and as a fashion-tech blogger - I see BoF as a great benchmark. So thank you :). I find this video interesting and worth sharing with young designers (I live and work in Poland and we have many talents here). The one thing I can't agree with is the 1st statement: that starting a fashion business requires a lot of money, actually it really depands on creativity. The question is: do I need staff, do I need PR agency, do I need to hire a graphic designer or even a programmer to start a business? The fact is that in today's world many things can be done for free or for small amount of money. It doesn't differ that much from making a tech start-up (believe me, I'm a startup co-founder as well). All you need to do is to be and think AGILE. In today's world we have internet, cheap apps, free knowledge. So all a designer needs to do is to be creative and lean. And he/she doesn't need to make a full collection! 1-2 piece[s] is[are] enough to try a market. It doesn't mean that he/she doesn't need it at all. But it's not that bad (here is my AGILE fashion manifesto: geekgoeschic.co/2015/06/03/agile-fashion-manifesto). Everything else that you say is true and I think it's quite universal: starting your own business is always hard. You're always eating glass and you're always alone in that. (but it's also really exciting and challenging and you learn 10x faster and 10x more than while working in someone's else company! :)). Greetings from Poland! Kasia

Every single thing he says is true. Every single word. And we have a CMT business and no one with 10 units gets looked at. UNLESS they show you they are worth it, and serious. And most are flash in the pan dreamers and here today gone tomorrow. 99.9% will not make it. Most lack the talent, and if they have talent are terrible at business. The rule is YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL. Then work from there.

Being able to communicate your designs to others and knowing some of the technical sides of fashion will help. So really, as long as you can clearly tell people what your vision is and you're really committed to starting a business not being able to draw perfectly is the least of your worries.
