In this video I give some simple tips to consider when breaking up a dog fight. There is no video on dogs fighting, just my tips that I've used over many years of working with sometimes very dominant dog in the shelters. These tips are merely advice and I urge you to be very cautious around dogs that are fighting.

An arm lock on the windpipe of attacking dog whilst pulling up on the snout of attacking dog makes them release pretty much immediately. Something I've learnt recently when my springer was attacked by a German shepherd. Ex British army and having learned these techniques on humans it was my instant reaction. It worked almost instantly and luckily other than a few harsh words and guidance to the owner both dogs came of unhurt. Some breeds will try to crush the windpipe of other dogs. So glad when this happened it was me walking him and not the wife or kids. Owners ..... Know what you are buying and if they go wild if you know you couldn't control them don't fucking buy one.

Im so thankful that here in sweden we have dog parks that are not free for all. If you are there and someone comes, they wait or ask if they can enter. Mutual respect. If you say no they wait.

That is how it should be! Here in Canada, good dog owners are too afraid to go to dog parks. I wish they were available for private rentals, and would be more than willing to pay.

Good content. As a handler, the only way is to choke the biting dog out. Most dogs have flat collars. I was trained to place the biting dog on “2 wheels” and twist the flat collar. Unfortunately that is assuming the biting dog will not redirect on me. I handle a GSD. We do not go near dog parks.

This is the best tip i was walking my dog and two pitbulls got out that was before i knew how to break up a dog fight so i tryed to restrain her but that didnt help so the owners reluctnatly came out and shocked him and he pulle off (she was ok) then i stopped going down there that same male pitbull got out and was running loose he latched onto my dog and i knew what to do i took my dogs leash off and choked out the pibull and then they had to end up putting him down becouse of how many attacks he did 😢 (im not saying pittbulls are bad they are amazing dogs and they are really friendly but he eather had a bad past or his owners didtn know how to handle him it wasnt their fault for the most part or the dogs) my dog is perfectly ok and i know what to do now jusst like any dog walker should know stay safe out there! If we were to write down a set of golden rules, this would be No. 1: Never go to a dog park. Ever. I feel just so sorry for them, they meant well for their dog and all they got was a trauma for everyone, so sad 😑 I hope dog and owner will recover and get well soon!

If no dog parks, how do you socialize a dog? Seriously, I hate dog parks too but I go because I thought it was good for my dog and yes, I do believe he will get bit. He already was in 2 fights that he didn’t start. He fights back but always winds up on his back - it’s just not in him 😢

I also advise against my clients going to dog parks. Play dates with balanced dogs with similar play styles and sizes is great. Puppy socialization with other puppies, super. But not at a dog park. Not only is there a high chance of a dog fight but also disease transmission. Having spent 8 years at a municipal shelter (and I'm sure Robert has had similar experiences), if you try to break up a dog fight, expect to get bitten and if you don't, you got lucky. Wheelbarrowing sometimes works but you have to expect a re-direct from the dog (it works better with 1 person on each dog). Another thing we used to do was shoot water from a hose at the dogs. Sure you should avoid it going right to the face, but a strong jet of water may buy you enough time to separate the dogs. Again, this is best if there are 2 people... one to restrain each dog. Sadly, the bulk of my fight experiences were in the shelter and due to people either not being able to properly get dogs in/out of kennels, broken latches on kennels or people simply not closing kennels and checking that the gate was closed (or that the outside run gate was closed before letting the dog to their outside run).

i have a rottie/lab puppy and a grown up dog of 7 years, also a rottie/lab. So, i went to show how the puppy grows to the people that gave her to me and her mom which is a purebreed rottie. My older one came with us, as the two dogs knew eachother and there werent any problems ever, they tolerated eachother, my oldest is an easy going dog, she likes people, and the other dogs family was all there, kids grandma grandpa mom etc. We knew she was protective of the grandma, but not to the extent we seen. My older just went to sniff the grandma, slowly, politely, she barely managed to get a sniff in when the rottie attacked her out of nowhere and attached herself on the neck of my eldest. We could not get them apart by screaming and pushing the rottie away so the granpa came with some iron tool and put that in the mouth of the rottie and she let go instantly, thing is she barley did anything to my dog, it was mainly just pulled hair out and just a little bit of skin was hurt, she wasnt even bleeding. Even trusted dogs sometimes can make a whole mess.

I used to take my dog to a dog park, when she was young, she enjoyed running with others but she got bullied a few times. As she grew, she developed a bubble and thus doesn't care for other dogs in her space. Now, I take her when the park is empty. Our park has some new agility equipment so I use this for training. If another dog does come in, I leash my girl and continue working her, but I move away. Most people are respectful enough to recognize that I'm working and they maintain distance. Some people have poor recall and are slow to get their dog to leave us alone. When the park is full, I work outside on a long line. The thing I hate about dog parks is how people fail to police their dogs. So many times when a new person comes in, dogs run to crowd the gate, and owners just sit there watching. This makes for an overwhelming experience. I think dog parks have their perks, but they are not used responsibly.

I lost control when the chow bite me on my thigh and I went down. Kali was on tbe chow instantly it was wearing an abnormally wide collar so she did not kill the chow right away. I was able to make her drop the chow in time to save it. We still got tbe blame I had to move to anothet county and lost my job. The owner of the chow had called the police and even thougj I denied any wolf blood they were suspisus.

I'm alwaya leary about breaking dog fights between large dogs. And tight confinement. U need to have a leash on hand and a firm hand and control over the dogs. I knew of a gentleman i used to work with loose 3 fingers and nearly his life when his male Rotweiler redirected his aggression when he tried to break it up trying to fight with another large dog he kept. He swore the Rottie was his baby, etc etc. To me, there was something off about it. From what I remember he said he was trying f to break up the fight. Male turns around and redirects and latches on to his fingers, pulls his hands free and stumbles back over a coffee table? Anway dog goes around and proceeds to chew on his thigh. The onpy thi g thay saved him was his size. He's about 260lbs 6'1. He managed to crawl away and fainted outside in the hallway of his apartment building.

1:15 100%, I hike with my dog 2 times a week to break up our road work schedule. On the trails we run into dogs that are off leash with no owners in sight and whenever this happens I just let my boy go (he is trained in recall, i generally keep him on long line to have some control on him while on winding trails with little visibility.), restraining your dog in a situation like this is similar to the girlfriend grabbing your arms in a brawl.

Blood choked a hundred men in Jui Jitsu and it took all my strength for about 60 seconds to make her pass out and release. They are so much stronger than us. If you still insist on going to dog fight rings... I mean dog parks, then at least bring pepper spray with you. You will have to spray the attacking dog before they latch on to your dog and then you will have to spray the pissed off irresponsible dog owner who brought their aggressive dog to the park, because they will be threatening and screaming at you.

Absolutely right about dog parks. But here in South Africa we really have a lot of stray dogs running around looking for fights and I am sorry to say, but the majority are Pit Bull dogs because their owners have no idea what type of dog they really have. Anyways, I have learned over the years that the only way I can prevent a fight or defend my dog is to be super vigilent and carry a hand held tazer and shoo the attacking dog away before it bites.

Great advice, another thing that I have done is to grab the back legs of the attacking dog if you can and lift them really high. Dogs are startled by suddenly being nearly upside down. Of course this depends on your size, strength and the size of the dog.
@mell.7817
@mell.7817 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Carol. I agree. I have done this a number of times over the years with complete success. Grabbing the back legs and lifting them as high as possible really is the best and safest way for 60 lbs. or less sized dog fights. I can’t speak for larger dogs. Raising the back legs of the attacking dog really high usually stops the fighting, though you may need to wait a few moments for the actual release. (Robert is right in never trying to pull one off the other or flesh will come too.) I have never attempted to break up fights of huge muscled dogs that Robert is so knowledgeable about. I do carry a small extra leash at all times, however, being coordinated enough to get a leash hooked around a fighting dog’s neck isn’t always that easy since they are usually whipping round quickly and can sometimes redirect.

Amen to that. So many issues with dog parks and most of them are to do with the humans either being neglectful or entitled. Yes we want to socialise our dogs, but they can also learn bad habits and negative behaviour from other dogs too.

I take my girl to our local dog park but I wouldn't go to ones in some areas. Ours is fenced, divided in two sections and you can see anyone pulling up to come in. Most people who go ask if it is ok to bring their dogs in if you are there or you simply tell them to wait whilst you put your dog on leash and leave if you don't want interaction, or they will wait till you leave. I never let mine play with dogs I don't know and if I do see one that looks relaxed, I will gauge reactions first before they are let off to play. Bearing in mind, ours is not usually crowded either - some days I can be there for an hour and have both sides to ourselves. You get to know the busy times. If there are people there, I just drive somewhere else and we go for a walk - but often there are off leash, unattended dogs roaming so the park is probably safer! Depends where you are.

Straddle the dog with heels together. Grab the collar in 10&2 position, slide it high up on the dog”s neck(mandibles ) and roll it forward while keeping the elbows tucked in ( more strength). Dog will eventually (30 - 60 seconds) open up his mouth. If you pull on the leash, it will put the dog in opposition reflex mode thus will create more drive.

I have been in the middle of my Pit mix and husky during a fierce fight 3 times and just this morning my pit mix and Belgian Malinois locked onto each other in another horrible fight. The only way I have found that even remotely works is grabbing their collars and twisting as hard as I possibly can to choke both out at the same time, It is not a easy task. I actually have a sound video of the last time I broke up the fight, I was recording my Mals catch balls and the pit just attacked, I dropped my phone and ran to them, as my other 4 dogs tried to join in or help (not sure) but every time It has happened My instinct is to choke the dogs out. But let me tell you it is not easy and it’s crazy how strong, a dog is during a fight. I actually ripped the skin off my knuckles, trying to twist the collar Hard enough to choke them out. And I’m not sure if it works or we are all just exhausted. And I don’t have time to run in the house and get a rope or lead when all hell breaks loose. But the damage has been minimal a few punctures and small tears. I am 56 years old, and cannot take much more abuse, trying to break up dog fights lol And that is why I started research on quickest way to stop a dog fight. and found these videos Sometimes it might be better to let them fight it out, but I haven’t seen any suggestions on that yet. Will the dogs kill each other eventually or will they separate on their own If I just let them fight. My pit mix is my sons and had her as a pup, can’t give her up, she’s the princess, the Husky is a rescue from my bro in law and has taken her back (thank god) My mals are my hobbie I love the interaction, training and affection. So I I am just looking to expand my knowledge on the proper way to disengage two dogs locked onto each other. I guess The only true method has been the choke out? It’s not for the week and I’m sure it works better with two people. God forbid a young lady Or boy has to break up a dog fight, there’s no way they could Muster enough strength to choke out even a medium to small dog no less 75 pound pit-bull.

My dog was attacked yesterday. I have a standard schnauzer, the only thing that saved him from having his face torn off was his long beard, the staffy that attacked him tore his entire beard off. As of today, im carrying a stout stick to create a tourniquet with the attacking dogs collar. If I didnt live in the UK, I'd carry a serrated pocket knife. 0:43 "Those people were smart". You say you will explain why later, but unfortunately you don't. I will go out on a limb and guess that your reason for saying this is that most people don't know what to do and will make it worse. We breed Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and for those who don't know them, they are a very tough determined little breed. Think of a 300 lb dog in a 30 lb body. We have a friend who also breeds Staffords, and she has always run a pack of 5 or 6 animals. She didn't make them wear collars at home. We do, our dogs ALWAYS have a strong non-metalic collar so you can twist it to cut off their air if something happens. I asked her if she had ever had a fight and she replied she had. I asked her how she broke it up if they were not wearing collars. She said she used a broom. I said you didn't have a fight. A few months later she called in tears, she had finally had a fight between two bitches, and the pack piled on. She lives alone and had to deal with it single handed and it got ugly. NEVER go to a dog park, ALWAYS have a collar on your dog. If your dog is approached by another dog, give it a slack leash and let the dogs sort out the initial contact. Don't use a chain or metal choke (you can walk them with one but it is best to have a regular collar as well) because you will hurt your hand long before the dog is choked. It is worth specifying that you choke the dog with the most dangerous grip first, and you do it by putting your hand through the collar and rotate until it restricts the neck. You don't choke the dog until it is unconscious, it will go slack in your hand and release, at which point you separate the dogs without further injury. Then you sit down and try not to have a heart attack.

My dog was attacked by my friend's dog. I had never seen a fight and had no idea what to do. I tried to pull the dog off and couldn't, no matter how hard I tried., but she was too strong. (Fortunately, my friend's dog wasn't trying to kill my dog... just teach him a lesson.) She had a collar on and I put my hand underneath it and twisted to cut off her air supply, and pulled her backwards out of the room and shut the door. It was scary as all get-out. I hope to never go through that again. I was so thankful that the dog had a collar, otherwise I don't know what I would have done. I did what you commented on after... sat down trying to avoid a heart attack., lol. I held my dog, called the vet, and took him in. I'm sorry for what happened to your dog, but the fault lies with an owner who cannot control their dog. Either they haven't put enough time into training or they don't know what they should be doing. As a dog trainer, I spend most of my time teaching people and little of my time teaching dogs (the only time it's the opposite was the years I spent in a shelter where the dogs didn't have owners).

Lucky for me I watched Robert before I got my shepherd. One time I did just inspect a local dog park and what a cluster.... Anyways. I do worry about off leash dogs rushing us on walks. This has happened. For some reason people just let their dogs outside without a good recall to potty. Not ideal. Anyways I mostly walk at night or morning. Before or right after bed. Less interactions. It's sad because I socialized my pup so much that she wants to meet every dog and person. Covid I guess has helped avoid interactions over the last 2 years for better or worse. This answer to the question is very limited… I’m a professional Dogwalker 20 years not all dogs are at the park some are actually in a house with the dogs don’t have the collars on and they’re going after each other and they’re locked in… When they’re locked in that mindset and they’re biting down… You can’t just pull them apart, choke them or grab them ! You can try to pull them apart, but I guarantee you might get bit in there and done it… Pitbull and a Dash hound… Anyways… If you have water nearby… Pour some water on to give you that time to then be able to take the one away or put something between them… The best thing you can do if you can is the pick the other one up and get them away from the dog… I had to break up to Akita‘s in the house they did have collars… I was able to put a leash on one and put him back in the crate… I was on scene with a pitbull and a dash hound that broke every single bone in that - and when I got on scene… I did pick up the dash hound him , he clamped down hard on my hand, but I carried him home… Inside the house t, Have to pick up water and throw it on them to give you that time to be able to pick the one up to get them away from the scene… God bless bless

I own a vigorous dog that needs to run off energy. Living in populated area, off leash dog park is where we go. Dog does not live in vacuum, so she encounters other dogs/people. The untrained aggressive dog owned by the blase apathetic person responsible for it is indeed a menace at the park. His dog could kill a small nondefensive dog very quickly and in the commotion take his dog and leave the area, and be gone. This happened at our park. We also had a nut case show up at our park . This guy maced a lady's Burmese mountain dog totally uncalled for. Options to exercise and get out if you have dog are problematic, dog food, vet care, dog clubs/groups,special dog events, time and money to meet your goals - all challenging, be aware and love your best best friend.

I have taken my 2 malinois to dog parks for over 9 years without an incident. My approach is reading the park and being in charge. I am 5'8" 145lbs and 64yo and there are plenty of unfriendly pits in Richmond Ca. I tell my dogs off and they obey. If an aggressive dog comes up I am armed with bear spray and a lock-blade knife which I have never used. Maybe it's because it would be 3 against 1 and most aggressive dog owners are pussies. I have been applauded numerous times for stopping fights never involving my dogs and so far nobody has been hurt. It's very easy to intimidate these people when you are in control. I'm just saying being an absolutist against dog parks is why bad people go there and I have met some great people and made quite a few friends there.

@@cherylschaeffer7832 I've known people who did this and it worked, the problem is it often doesn't, andmost people don't have the experience to assess the situation, then decide on the best course. When you have a dog that has heavily clamped on another dog, you can swing them in the air by one dog's back legs and it won't let go. I have seen it. You also normally don't want to use a process of elimination, trying different techniques to see what will work. Choking works 100% of the time, it does no permanent harm to the dog being choked, and it stops the attack and minimizes harm to the dog being bitten (or person for that matter). So, as someone who works with dogs, would you advise people to use a less effective method first, especially in a very frightening moment?

The majority of purebred American pit bull terriers won't let go because they've been grabbed by the legs. Causing them pain or discomfort will cause them to bite harder. Prying or choking them off a hold are the two most efficient methods when dealing with dogs like American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull terriers, American bullies, American Bulldogs, Presa Canario, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, Bandogs, etc. There are a lot of breeds that won't hang on with as much determination, but whether or not the wheelbarrow method will work depends a lot on the individual dog. This most likely won't be a scenario that many people will encounter, but anyway. I had seen a scuffle between two dogs that most people would consider pitbulls. This scuffle broke out down by the river, and one of the dogs had the other one by the back near the base of the neck. While the other dog had ahold of it by the armpit. There were 4 girls and 3 guys. 2 of the guys and 1 of the girls were in the water. 3 of the girls and 1 guy were on land and closer to the dogs. It was the screaming that got my attention, and when I looked over, it seemed like only the people who were on land were aware of what was happening, but they were all frozen for a second. Then, one of the girls jumped up and started sprinting towards the dogs who were spinning in circles. By the time she was able to grab onto one of the dogs, everyone knew what was going on, and the guy who was land was making his way over to help her. Now, the two of them were trying to pull the dogs apart, but they weren't having any luck. This goes on for a few seconds, and then one of the guys who had been in the water reaches them. He grabs the bigger dog by the back legs and starts pulling both dogs towards the water. Once he gets to the water, he grabs a dog in each arm with them still holding on to each other and throws both dogs in the water. This is a deep part of the American River, and the dogs can't touch the bottom even though they are close to the shore. As soon as they went under the water, they let go of each other and started swimming towards the shore. Once they made it out of the water, one dog went one way, and the other dog went the other way. Everyone calmed down, and nothing else happened by the time I left 4 or 5 hours later. That's just a little dog fight story that I thought I'd share. Throwing the dogs in water seemed to be a very effective way to stop the fight.

If the biting dog has a collar grabbing, twisting it about 180⁰ and then lifting upwards is the quickest most reliable way I know of to choke out a dog. Just be sure the collar isn't sitting on their trachea before lifting. If there isn't a collar any leash can be turned into an emergency slip leash by running the clasp end around the offending dog's neck and then through the leash handle. Again choking and pulling up applies a pressure that seems to make dogs let go. When I was a first time puppy/dog owner my furball (about 4 months old at the time) got attacked in a pet store by a loose dog. I would have done anything to have that knowledge at the time. Made sure I would be ready if God forbid I ever had to go through something similar again.

@@Bushanie24 The other dog was on a long leash but the owner wasn't even holding it. The dog had come around a corner into our isle outside the other dog owner's view. At first the dogs were okay with very loose relaxed body language but then the owner picked up his leash and started pulling right as my pup was giving submissive face licks. The pulling I think instantly frustrated the other dog and as a reaction grabbed my pup. My pup was left with a few punctures through one of his jowls and a small puncture through the floor of his mouth. A few antibiotics and restful days and he was okay but in the moment it was terrifying. I can still hear his scream when I think about it. Unfortunately in the moment I had no idea how to handle it and basically had to wait till the owner came around the corner and practically beat his dog to get it to let go. It wasn't fun. That sort of sparked my obsession with learning about dogs beyond the typical pet owner level to ensure I could keep him safe in the future. There also weren't any cameras in the store aside from near the registers so I wasn't able to get the guy to pay for the vet bill. I found out later through animal control that the other dog had already had a history of a couple dog vs dog incidents. I know I was niave and could have likely done something to avoid the situation but this other dude seemed like a total 10/10 scum bag. Became even more of a head ache because scummy dude went as far as to try to blame my puppy for the incident even though mine was by my side the whole time and this dude didn't even know where his dog was.

Edit. I guess I spoke about the "ball of teeth and screaming" type of fight before the "lock on". I've had 2 Malinois and one of them had a particularly bad humor when she was young. Very reactive and I've had to break up several fights she's been in. But she never had the lock on and murder drive toward other dogs or thankfully ever humans. The grab legs and pull always worked with her and others. The only time I had to do something more drastic is when she caught a ground squirrel and she became absolutely enraged and went into the hunt/murder mode. I had to literally pick her up and slam her on the ground for her to break the contact. Unfortunately by then it was too late for the critter. Got her from the shelter in 2016 and she's grown into a very loving and fun family dog. She's NEVER been aggressive toward humans.
