Train your dog NOT to Jump on people. This is a very important thing for dogs to learn. Manners and basic obedience is something we should expect from our dogs. Some dogs jump on people to be friendly and some do it to be dominant.
In this video Sandy and her dog Tasha spend a little time learning the basics of teaching Tasha not to jump on people. As you'll hear in the beginning of the video, Tasha jumped on someone a while ago and knocked them over.

My f GSD was doing this a few months ago and my trainer basically said the same thing. This technique works if you put the time in with training. On a side note, I just want to thank Robert for his honesty. I am a first time dog owner and was seriously considering an Akita. A friend recommended his channel and after watching his videos I decided against that idea. To much dog for me at this time. Happy Holidays everyone!

I would say your right and your wrong. Akitas are not the best choice for novice owners but as far as for jumping on people Akitas are more often than not a a real fan of or have the tendency to do that. They do need exercise but are not a real energetic breed per say.

@Chanocmacias Thank you, but I wasn't saying Akitas were. I was just thanking Robert for doing these videos. I was seriously going to buy one and already had breeder picked. My friend recommended watching Roberts videos before I put money down. I did and decided against it. My F working GSD is more than enough for me.....even working with a trainer

@@camillahunt3247 Well the option will always be there if you ever have to rehome a GSP or one of your dogs passes away don't shut the door on owning an American Akita. From my experience the only issue I have had with mine is same sex dog aggression. Mine have always been accepting of kids and strangers. They aren't overly friendly but by all means not standoffish in defense mode either.

@Chanocmacias Oh I definitely plan on getting an Akita. Just not for a few years at least. Venus is enough of a handful right now. She will be a year old soon and starting to get difficult. I made a mistake when I was looking for reputable GSD breeders and put my deposit down before I fully understand what a working line GSD actually was 😆 Her energy level is off the charts. Even after really long walks she is ready for more. I recently trained her to run with me while I am on a bike. A few good runs a week really helps. I love her so much I couldn't imagine rehoming her. If the worst happens my breeder will take her back though...no questions asked. Which I think is really nice of them to do.

my biggest training challenge is other people….reaching their hands through my wrought iron fence to pet my dog…like we’re a petting zoo. i’ve had to put up a 3’ inner corral fence to keep her away from the fence because people won’t stop even though i’ve asked them to ignore her, she was destroying my plants in her excitement to the people plus practicing such bad behavior.

Smooth Robert; very smooth! Win win for both the dog & owner. You going to shelters, volunteering both you're training experience & expertise is past huge; it's GIGANTIC! Love it. By doing this type work at the shelters creates well balanced animals, making them that much more obtainable for new owners. It also opens up kennel space for ( unfortunately) new dogs to arrive. This pioneering effort in offering you're personal time & effort to shelters will hopefully become a trend for ALL dog trainers across the country. They could all learn that much more by engaging with imprisoned dogs in shelters. Keep up the great work Robert!

A neighbor has a sweet poodle, dog gets so excited and happy to see me, he jumps up. Problem is the owner doesn't have the patience or understanding for me or he to do exactly what you are doing here. So frustrating for me because dogs can do and learn all these things..... if given a chance to learn

Love this video. This is a great technique for training the "No Jump". I've been using it myself with many of my clients.and it's always successful. Some dogs get it in seconds and some need a few sessions. I suspect the difference in the time it takes isn't just the dog's intelligence or willingness to work but more to do with the clients determination to practise the steps.;)

You said something interesting here. You said something about how the lady needs to look at you and look around but not at the dog. I find I watch my dog closely a lot, especially in heel. I'm looking down at him, not at where we're going and what's around as much. I'm paying attention to what's around and watching for potential challenges but does the dog interpret us looking down at them in some sort of way like we're looking to them instead of leading? I struggle to show my dog that "I've got it" and that's one area I really need to improve on while he's just barely over a year old.

Hi Robert, How do feel about training the dog to jump up on a command word so that the handler can control the instances of the behaviour's occurrence better so as to train the "No Jump" vs the "Paws Up"? I've used both techniques and both have worked. Stepping on the leash so that dog self corrects works very quickly while training the dog "Paws Up" and "No Jump" with two different commands for each behaviour takes longer but now I have a secondary command and behaviour to shape for other tasks. Most clients do better with the technique in the video, probably because it follows the K.I.S.S. principle; However, some clients prefer the method of teaching the "Paws Up" to teach the "No Jump" so as to have an existing behaviour to shape. What do you think?

Do you have any tips on barking? We had a trainer tell us to put an e-collar on him and correct when he barks. But he’s now learned that when the collar is on he shouldn’t bark and as soon as it’s off he can bark at anything. We hate keeping it on him and we’re looking for a better solution.

It works but be patient, I've done it with a Bully, but he didn't respond to the catching himself on the leash. It was more a patience game with him. Like not giving him playful energy til he does what I'm asking, had to shut down when he's stubborn. Good luck!!

??????Robert I have a serious question. How to properly introduce my almost 1 year old GSD to my brother's 8 week old Great Dane puppy. We are both adults and live in separate homes. I have followed your advice on my dog and he has not met other dogs. He sees them and sometimes barks and sometimes walks right past them unbothered. The reason I am taking this so seriously is because my dog and my brothers will spend time together. We go on family camping trips 3-4 times a year and we bring the dogs. Also we meet up a ton and want them to get along. Any advice how to first introduce them? Merry Christmas!!!

If your dog doesn’t have any aggression issues it shouldn’t be an issue. Take them for a walk. Nose to tail meetings, watch body language.

Love your videos but I swear my dog is not meant for any conventional training. He is super patient for treats and will wait forever so this won't help teach him to stop jumping.

The dog isn't correcting herself. She's being blocked from following through with a behavior and being rewarded when she gives up. She may learn not to jump up, but she's also going to learn to give up. She's not being a choice to make a decision. This can be done with shaping, by practicing saying hello, with repetition it becomes less interesting and your dog will jump up less, then reward them for all four on the floor. No corrections necessary. Practice with the same person, over and over, and then add someone new, practice, practice, practice. Allowing a dog to learn through making a choice builds their confidence and understanding.
