My name is Courtney,Im 17 years old,i've been singing probably since i was about 7 when i really developed a passion for it.I was never the type of person to involve myself in plays and events so my mom doesnt take me seriously. I have a great voice, im not just telling myself that, i hear from a lot of my friends that i do.The thing is, ive never performed in front of a group of people. So, im thinking of taking a really bold step and performing at my senior dinner. Thanks for the inspiration :)

I too am confused. I am an anatomist and I know that you cannot possibly take a full breath using the diaphragm only. Strictly diaphragmatic breathing expands the lungs "up and down" only. Chest breathing expands the lungs "side to side" and "back and forward". Taking a full breath requires expanding the lungs in all three directions, tensing the diaphragm and lifting and expanding the chest.

This is a really great tip on breathing- I have not heard anyone talk about pushing outward like this- I have looked into a lot of breathing techniques but this is a really great one- well done!!

What I learned that really helped me was confidence ( a different video ) Some people might be scared to do a note that they think they can't do. But if you try to do it you might be surprised. I tried to sing a part of I Have Nothing by Whitney and I was surprised. I sang a high part, but I need to work on not using my throat muscles because I get TOO much tension.

The diaphragm is a muscle that supports your internal organs-- in singing, most importantly, the lungs. Diaphragmatic breathing simply means that instead of controlling the intake of air with your lungs, you OPEN your lungs (by LOWERING the diaphragm), and let the air flood in. If you "lift your chest" when you breathe in, you are are not breathing with the diaphragm. Rather, expand the area BELOW the lungs, expanding your belly and sides, and then slowly LIFT the diaphragm as you sing. Try it.

Mostly through your nose with your mouth slightly open. Breathing through the nose warms and moistens the air as it bypasses the mouth and doesn't dry out your tongue.

I guess I would be referring to the part from 1:40 - 2:30 Where he talks about "keeping your diaphragm pushed out". To "provide support". Not only are both terms vague, but the first sounds impossible to me because your diaphragm naturally collapses as you exhale to sing. He seems to be referring more to the obliques than the diaphragm in this example.

Hi, nice tips ! I already knew them from my teacher. I experienced them a lot but somehow, I've failed to apply them correctly : I can lift and open the rib cage very well all around until the low back, but as soon as I open the mouth and start making a sound, I start collapsing. I never understood where to find the "strength" not to collapse : as soon as I start doing a sound, it's like I have no more sensations down here, almost no more physical balance and therefore I can't feel any muscle I could use to keep it open. Are you able to find words to express the sensation you're feeling when you're in the meantime losing air and pushing outwards your lower "waist" ? Thank you :)

Hey there ! I've been having some problems with my voice for a few months now. I've been singing for about 3 years now, and a few months ago my voice started becoming really dry ( I drink A LOT of water every day, so i don't think that's the problem), Lower notes are easy for me and i can sing them without any problems, but singing high notes, my voice turns very dry and i get tears in my eyes. Do you think you can help me with my problem? Thank you !

I have a question: when i breathe from my diaphragm (rib cage expands, not so much chest rise), when i exhale, should my abdomen (belly button area) be what is controlling the amount of air that comes out from the diaphragm? Like should I "tense" my abs when "breathing out" and singing? thank you for your tips. i subbed.

I do take singing lessons but I need another point of view. I'm able to breath with my belly and sides, just as you show but I really can't figure out how not to lose support. As soon as start singing, my sides gets empty. The only way I have to keep them "full" is to force it and it gets way uncomfortable and then my belly is the one that loses everything. Can you tell more about the what I do have to feel ? Thank you, It really prevents me from improving :(

It's perfectly fine that you feel that way. The thing is, the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm is what allows you to inhale and exhale. Since singing is essentially exhaling air, your diaphragm naturally contracts. As a student of biology, I share your confusion as I feel that it makes NO SENSE to 'hold your diaphragm open' because then it would be impossible to breath! When singers 'push' outward, they are activating a muscle, but it certainly can't be the diaphragm.

Im not really a singer, just a person who has trouble speaking. My voice hurts all day from something (don't know what). I think breathe support is a huge problem for me, and when I really think about it I end up taking a huge breathe before speaking. I can see where that would create a strain in my throat muscles. At the start of the video you were able to sing for like 30 seconds without a break. I cant even come close to that, even breathing from my diaphragm. Is there a secret to it?

I don't know what it means to "hold the diaphragm open." If it means holding the diaphragm's tension steady while exhaling, then yes its impossible However, I am afraid I have lost the context of our discussion. When I observe opera singers and voice teachers, I am completely convinced that their chest rises and falls. Are you somehow supposed to CONTROL your breathing with the diaphragm? Yes, I am still confused!

vocal teachers say you need to let your belly relaxed and don't put any strength in it, but when you do that it just don't look right. i don't want to be singing with my belly hanging out. I see pop musicans and rockers who have flat abs. I am confused about this belly being relaxed and not putting any strength on it. I mean if you want to put more strength into your voice than doesn't little bit of strength go into your belly?
