Whenever I start to sing or practice i feels tight around my throat quickly. It's really hard for me to relax my throat when I sing even though im singing notes that are comfortable. I'm literally watching you videos for like half an hour in a row now and you really are a great teacher. I hope I'll manage to sing strain freebone day haha.
@Victoria-Victorious3 жыл бұрын
First of all, it is GOOD that you notice this tension. That is the start! I would practice non-singing exercises like the spoken sirens in an easy part of your voice. Also humming. Do the exercises with the 3 fingers as I show in the video.

I have been a squeezer most of my singing life LOL! And it’s sometimes hard to unlearn but not impossible! My poor folds & muscles took a beating for years! I love the humming but only recently learned there’s a difference between humming nasally or even just closed as opposed to on a “mmmmm” but with space in the back of the teeth. Victoria uses the “taller” visualization and I instantly yawn! That’s a good thing! How I do it is almost like “ohhllmm” but no “oh”, just “mmmm”. Feels much more open (taller) especially in the back. My lips buzz. Supported core breathing is super important too. It’s working wonders for me and the great thing is teachers like Victoria (and my personal/class teachers) give different methods to give us students the choice to see what works best. Keep at it! 👏🏻😃

I have a singing competition tomorrow and I searched this up because some days my throat is really tensed and others it isn’t and I don’t know how to control that and when it’s relaxed I’m hitting those notes really well. I just took this advice and immediately found myself able to sing at my best UNDER MY OWN control. Thank you so much
@EmmaMorgan09 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting that the same technique applies in ballet! When jumping think down! It makes for lighter elevation. If you think “up” when you jump, the upper body strains. It’s so similar!!

Hi Victoria, Thanks for your great advice. I've been singing over 40 yrs. Never warmed up until about 3 years ago. Well, of course, I'm paying the price now. I stopped singing for the past 2 years but I want to get back into it professionally and have been working on my voice. The doctors advised that I go to a voice teacher and and speech therapist. I've been to a speech therapist and I do vocal exercises like yours. She encouraged me to work with a straw and work with a vocal coach...) My main problem is that I need to clear my throat often (while I sing) Sometimes I have to cough. I crack too. (I have been diagnosed by specialists and I've been told that I have "habit" cough and my vocal cords don't close completely at one end. I believe it may be a type of vocal cord paralysis although the doc did not use that word) I think I've improved a little but of course, this is a big issue when I sing "live". Can you advice me? I have searched your KZbins and haven't found anything like this exactly. But I'd love to get your professional advice. Or, is it too late for me?? Thank you!!
@Pickaxe19643 жыл бұрын
Victoria, you are definitely the best voice/vocal teacher on KZbin and perhaps anywhere else!!! You have explained so many things that other voice teachers are just not able to explain. In the past I went to two vocal teachers and after a number of lessons, they still could not help me or tell what I was doing wrong. I would ask them questions which they never seemed able to answer. You are an amazing teacher and your incredible singing examples indicate you really can sing professionally and flawlessly and that you know what you are saying!! God bless you abundantly for your videos!!!

I play a Japanese bamboo flute (the shakuhachi). I used these techniques because I'm tensing my throat while playing my flute. I get throat sounds, and my teacher can tell it's affecting my tone. I sang octave slides enough to hear and feel the difference between when I was tensing and not tensing. Then I tried to mimic the feeling of not tensing when playing my flute. I alternated between singing slides and playing octave jumps on my flute. Sing, play, sing, play. This made a huge difference in my tone, I had no throat sounds, and now I think I can actually tell when I'm tensing. Thank you so much! Before your video, I was struggling with not being able to achieve the body awareness to not tense while playing. Now I think playing without tensing is achievable if I continue to retrain myself with your exercises.

Say I'm just starting to learn it. Some essential guidelines. Thank you again for your hard work on these videos😊, they help immensely.
@Victoria-Victorious4 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy that my videos are helping you! So when you first choose a song, practice it for technique first: (1) sing it on a single. easy vowel or something like BUB BUB or BEEP BEEP. If easy, then (2) add the lyrics. (3) Take any hard parts and make them into exercises . (4) Sing the whole song again for technique. (5) Then practice and add expression, word stress, dynamics. I will make a video on this specifically, but I do discuss and show how to do some of this in: Want Faster Progress in Your Singing? Practice Correctly - Have a Plan! kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4PNZ5qId7Spi6c

Thank you very much for these videos. I've been taking lessons for about a year now. Me and my teacher have been attempting to fix my tightness since the beginning without much luck. My chest voice has improved a lot and I've managed to get into mixed voice but it's been described as very "heady". I am unable to actually sing in head voice or falsetto without completely locking up with tightness. My teacher is very good but he is young and somewhat inexperienced, he's 19 and I'm 18. He has a degree and is classically trained but I think the experience you have is unattainable without age as you have had more time to develope your teaching. I guess this was a long way of saying I appreciate what you do. Thank you.

You’re amazing Victoria, glad I stumbled onto your channel. So much wisdom and the gift of communicating it. I started having problems singing, even though I’ve had proper training and the things I’ve been taught align with what you communicate. I play guitar and sing for a living and sometimes I go through phases where I don’t realize I’m screwing up my vocal technique because I’m having to focus on the physical and mental challenges of doing two things at once. Sometimes the guitar parts are complicated In juxtaposition to the vocals, so keeping mindful about everything is a challenge. But luckily your voice is in my head now steadily coaching while play each tune, and it is helping immensely. 🙏

Can you do a video on chest voice high tones? I don’t know if it is called belting, but like, using “the big voice” on high notes. Like Maria’s Carey in the chores of “And I-I-I will always love you” …. I was able to do the highest tone in Golden Eye a couple of years ago, but I’ve done so much head voice to not disturb the neighbors I’ve gone rusty; and now I actually really struggle with my “big voice” that I love using so much. 🙁 Btw: I watch your videos almost every day and used this video to help my singer boyfriend!
