How To Breed Crickets For Your Reptiles! (Successful first attempt, ended up with 1000s) 2020

When it comes to bug eating reptiles, frequent trips to the pets store to buy insects may pile up to become quite expensive. In this video we've documented and recorded our entire attempt at breeding our own crickets to feed our pet reptiles and save a little money on crickets!
We will share with you where to start, where we got our equipments, also tips and things to watch out.

Originally we bought 500 two-week old crickets online, we've been feeding the crickets to our reptiles while raising them. There were about 100 to 200 crickets left by the time they were mature. We kept feeding them to our reptiles about 5 per day, until the adult crickets start dying. And we still ended up with thousands of baby crickets, much more than we expected.

You need more cardboard surfaces because crickets have a built in population control. If they cross each other alot the "freak out" and start killing one another. So you have to give the larger population areas more surface to crawl on. I am using that bowl idea though. Good job..

@@pershop4950 I don't know about the original poster, but I go through 1,000 crickets every 4 weeks between 2 dumpy frogs, 3 red eyed tree frogs, and 1 adult leopard gecko. My other frogs eat fruit flies and my gargoyle gecko eats fruit paste. So yes, with only 6 animals who eat crickets I go through 1,000 a month. You have to factor in losses with that number. Not all 1,000 survive, even with proper care. With 3-4 feedings a week that equals roughly 200 crickets a week between 6 animals.

@@XpideRG You can order them for a reasonable price from Josh's Frogs. The benefit to that is you don't have to worry about them being exposed to pesticides like wild caught crickets will have been. That can kill more delicate species like frogs. I get 1,000 crickets for $15 plus $15 shipping. So $30 for 1,000 crickets vs $10 for 100 crickets from the pet store. But that is way more than enough so that you can use some for breeding and the rest for feeding while you wait for the breeding cycle to complete. They do sell them in smaller quantities, too.

yes the soil dry so fast, I spray water multiple times a day, later I tried covering it with a piece of plastic wrap, not covering it completely, leave some space for air, and it helped a lot, keeping the humidity in there. once the pinheads start to come out, I have to spray more carefully.

Another great tip is to remember not to put any type of a water source under a heated area light heat lamps or where a heat pad it. All it will do is evaporate quicker than putting it in the cooler end of the enclosure. Same goes for whatever species of reptile you are raising. It will save you time and the headache of constantly misting it down.

Do baby crickets really need the heat? Or will they do fine at 70 F? I understand that the adults need a minimum temperature of 80 F to breed(at least, that's what I got from my research, maybe I'm wrong?), but do I also need to keep my babies around 80 F minimum or will they hatch and do everything fine at 70 F, which is the average room temperature in my house? Just wondering, as I don't necessarily want to buy something for heat if it's not necessary for the babies. I have a heating pad, an adjustable one, but it's really big, not quite big enough to fit around me, but big nevertheless, probably too big for just heating the crickets so that they breed, so I will need to find a smaller heat source to use for my adults. But do the babies need heat in order to hatch or will they hatch at 70 F? originally I used a regular reptile dome lamp, just hang it on a chair, but there are better choices, like a porcelain clamp lamp, you can clamp it on the container. also, for the heat bulb, later I found out it's better to use Ceramic Heat Emitter, it last longer and it emit no light. hope this helps😊

You're going to be feeding some of these crickets to your chameleon. Feeling guilty about them being eaten might not be the best way to start. Going that route you could end up with a very hungry chameleon.

I have had a bearded dragon for a couple of years now and for about the past 2-3 years I have been feeding him crickets I have caught in my backyard and never has it harmed the lizard in anyway, once he got bigger I started feeding him grasshopper which are much larger but he still manages to eat them. So I would say yes it’s completely safe to feed them wild crickets. I have no idea about breeding them though, I would assume though that they will still breed, I have not personally tried breeding them but I see no reason why they wouldn’t breed. Hope this helps.

yes I did, but you still need to check the temperature near the soil a few times a day, sometimes the temperature changes, so I have to readjust the position of the heat lamp. but now I think an adjustable heat pad would be a better idea, I will try that next time. when I was filming this video, I didn't have one yet. hope this helps😊

Another way of controlling the population of crickets is to separate the adult females from the males ! I was like you when I first started ! As time went on, I had WAaaaaY to many crickets for the 4 frogs I had, so I sold some, gave some away, & donated to the outside wildlife in my backyard !! At this point, it was tooo much ! I had to control the population ! As soon as the crickets became old enough to breed, I separated the females from the males !! Population has been controlled !!

They HAVE to have a water source they won't drown in. No bowls of water. You can either use yellow cricket hydrating gel, a paper towel or small sponge soaked in water. That's a big factor. You don't have to put the tank in the dark as long as you provide enough egg crate carton for them to hide in and so they have more surface area so they don't crush each other.

They love hiding under egg cartons, hundreds of them huddle together under just one egg carton. So just move the egg carton to a different bin before they get to big.

thanks for the info! I went to check the vermiculite that I have at home, on the package, it did say "inhalation over long periods of high amounts of nuisance dust may make lungs more vulnerable to respiratory disease" and "avoid creating dust & goggles are recommended, gloves not required". need to be more careful when handling vermiculite. me too, I hope sand works, let me know how sand works out if you're going to use sand!

I get 1,000 crickets from Josh's Frogs. It's $15 for the crickets and $15 for shipping. Still, $30 for 1,000 is waaaay better than the pet store.

pretty much anything, including each other if you forget to feed them or don't feed them enough. but food and veggie scraps will be just fine for them .

as long as you can maintain a good humidity level at all time, it should be fine, otherwise the eggs will dry out

@@snoodyjones6970 you can use top soil from the store or even garden soil if you don't mind whatever is in the garden soil. however, if you bake both top soil or garden soil for a bit in your oven, that should kill a lot of eggs or parasites from either source.

Don't do that. Outdoor wild crickets are full of pesticides. Just like you can gut load your crickets with vitamins so they're better food for your pets, the same is true with pesticides. They can make your animal sick or even kill them. Order them online.

Wild crickets can also introduce parasites to your pet. Another reason not to do that.

did you get those crickets from reptile store? when I was buying crickets from reptile store, they die a few everyday. If you plan to breed crickets, get at least 50-100, and give them places to hide.
