I've been doing this for years and it really helps. I use Google docs and I'll make a 3x3 cell with 3 categories: bills, essentials and excess. Essentials are the things you can't live without like groceries and gas, and excess is everything else like eating out and shopping. It's rigid, but it forces me to see my spending in a very cut and dry manner. I make a new document for each month so it's not as streamlined as your approach. A quick sidenote: since covid I've been saving upwards of 60% of my net income each month.

Thank you for this! Very helpful and I will use it once I’m done with school. Quick question though. If you put money into savings say $5000 but then you buy a car for $5000 where do you put that expense? It would obviously be greater than your net income but bc the money came from your savings is there a separate section you use for bigger purchases?
@humphrey3 жыл бұрын
You can create a separate section for bigger purchases that deducts from your savings only. If that makes sense?
@aaronreid3203 Жыл бұрын
Should make a new vid if you havnt already on doing this in conjuction with a google form so people can link a form to the phone as EXPENSE and INCOME that way they dont need a separate app and can even capture receipts/invoices in the same form. Cheers

Do you have advice for using an excel sheet as a way to track all the specific purchases you make? That’s what I’m currently doing instead of using a check register or something like that and I feel like it could be a bit more organized.
@humphrey4 жыл бұрын
I am not sure there is a way other than typing everything in manually which seems like a pain. I do use a Spending Tracker app called "Spending Tracker", and the pro version lets you export all the data. You could try something like that, an app that automatically exports your line by line transactions - a lot of credit cards have this type of report as well. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
