A great way to utilize your junk box items and make a cool modulator for your CW rig. This is the 3rd one that I have made. This one uses a Multi-Elmac transformer.

Hey Terry after watching many of your videos I wish to say thanks for giving me the inspiration to restart my amp repair shop. Didn't realise how much I missed it.. A happy new year to you and your family. Tony

+A Last Roger that man. Glad I could make it intriguing again. Every day in the shop is a new adventure. Plus, there are not too many people in the art anymore. Sky's the limit! Enjoy and have a great 2016

Cool project. Believe it or not, 25 cycle power transformers can be used for plate modulation. Enough iron in 'em that core saturation is not a problem. Audio is broadcast quality up thru about 5 khz then smooth rolloff.. In areas where 25 cycle hydropower was used, these xfmrs were pretty common. They can do single-ended Heising as well as full-on push/pull with two 25 cycle xfmrs running back-to-back, driven by 6L6s in pp.

Enjoyed the video, but you would think in going through all the trouble to build the unit, one would take the time to clean and add a little black paint to the transformers.... Of course, that's just me.

My question is can these old parts be made up? Such as out of new parts and modifications?

Hello Terry. Love your vids. What type modulator transformer is that and what are the typical types normally and best used?
@d-labelectronics7 жыл бұрын
The one is this build came from a Multi-Elmac transmitter. UTC types are very common to find on ebay. Lots of good documentation available.

Can I use a toroidal transformer in place of an old mod transformer?

Now that I've seen this and found out where the needed transformer came from, why would I want to destroy another beautiful old radio for its parts to make this? A better idea would be to restore the Elmac and find a transformer elsewhere.

You mentioned using an "Octo plug?" on the back. I'm looking for something simular to replace a battery supply plug on a farm radio. Could you point me to a good source? Thanks!

+Dan Barrera Hello, I buy mine from the TubeDepot. They are in TN. Good selection of octal plugs/sockets

How much audio power does the modulator throw into a class C amp? I have a nice NOS 809 GE tube good for 25 or 30 watts of AM carrier.... I am considering 6L6 vs 6V6 push pull. I have a nice Stancor A-3845 mod xfrmr.

+Jay “Spirited Soul” Tee Hello, this modulator is approx 15 watts. I have a giant 6L6 modulator that does approx 40 watts
