This is great! Awesome design and cheap too! Very easy to accomplish

Nice build.I like the way you explained the vent for air flow and the holes for drainage. Many KZbin bird house builds don,t include that. However pressure treated lumber is not recommended

Wesley, here we are two years down the yellow brick road and your instructional video is as informative as the day after your editing. This video was the most useful and understandable than any that I have viewed. Tomorrow I am going to run - well, drive - to my local Home Deeps and purchase at least six dog-ear pickets. I setting the alarm now!

I make it very similar but put vent holes in the side top and drain holes in the bottom. Also a perch under the entrance hole. Nice job.
@WesleyAllenNC Жыл бұрын
I went back and added drain holes myself. Someone told me way back when not to install perches. They said it makes it harder for a bird to defend their next from inside the box.. I guess it might give an attacking bird a better foot-hold?

@@WesleyAllenNC I get a little something from watching all builders...yours show a love for life and that is what is important. I do perches about half/half as the spirit moves me....peace brother.

NEVER use pressure-treated lumber for birdhouses or bird feeders. It contains toxic chemicals that will harm the birds.
@TheWendyJohnson Жыл бұрын
100% true! This is the worst kind of wood you could possibly use for any kind of animal structure.

I thought the same thing.

I also agree, but Cedar pickets would work fine

Hi Wes. When you were assembling the birdhouse, I noticed you used Titebond Original Wood glue. That is not an exterior grade glue. You should use Titebond III. It is an exterior grade Waterproof glue. I like your design. Nice job.

do you think a 2 or 3 inch dowell just below the hole would be good for the bird to perch on?
@WesleyAllenNC2 ай бұрын
It would, and also looks neat, but it gives predatory birds a nice perch to attack a nest. I’m pretty sure that’s why most builders don’t suggest using them.

No ventilation and black roof means 10 degrees higher in July.

No need for a perching overhang - aids predators and I'd fasten the roof down too for similar reasons.

I like your boxes. That roof really makes the house special. For the size hole, what birds would normally choose to live in it?

Is it wise to use pressure treated? Chemicals. And if you're going to give the birds a landing area why not make it big enough for them to land on?

Leave it off, predators.

Hello! Why did you make the bottom off? It will collect moisture! Usually, the bottom plate is interior unless the house is placed in the moisture protected place (under a structure's roof...).

The extra piece you added in front of the hole DOES look nice, however, more importantly, it acts as a predator guard against critters that gnaw around the edges to make the hole bigger. Nice job though, (secure that lid).

The bottom should be inside so water drains away, as you have made it water will find its way in so you will have a wet floor and kill the chicks, Also you need to get in to clean it out a side panel is good for that.

This is similar to the one's I make, I tend to make a 25mm (1" ) hole for blue tits or 28mm for great tits but that's here in the UK, I don't know what birds you have. I think the important thing you are missing is a catch to hold the roof down to stop predators having a snack.
