I'm married to a Filipina, heading back there in 3 weeks and we will have our belated honeymoon in Bohol! I repair fiberglass boats for a living in the U.S. so I want to build a small boat for fishing in and around Quatro Islas in Leyte. This looks really easy, great video and great website thanks for posting.

Awesome good!! Stitch and glue boats are fun to built. Just a word of caution based on previous experience with stitch and glues: try to avoid trailering with outboards if you can on smaller boats. I had an issue with transom cracking from sides even with reinforced corners. Ended up welding a mount to front of trailer to attach 5hp while towing.

I really appreciate the video, I want to start my on boat soon. How is the punt holding up??? i would like to build one, with regards to the transom have u doubled it up? and did you screw in directly into the plywood? why did you not use a chine at the bottom?

Yes, I made the transom stronger because of the 8 HP motor. What is a chine? There is a keel however... For more infos please visit: boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more details and howto's about this boat.

There is no need for the "chine" you mentioned. The fibermat and the epoxy is doing the job to keep the sides and the bottom together. Please read the details at the website I mentioned above. Also: There are NO screws or nails in this boat.

Just wondering do you have to shape the sides so that the front of the boat is off the ground or does that just happen on it's own when you put the ribs in?
@gewibu4 жыл бұрын
If you have a look in the plans, you can see that the lower edge of the side panels is not 100% straight. That's why the front lifts upwards a little. However, I gave the front a new shape anyway. I'm in the planning stage right now, can you please specify the thickness of the frames? Can't find it anywhere. Thanks edit: I have another question, how did the sides react to bending after you glued the butt block? I assume it wouldn't want to bend in that area due to the epoxy and the additional thickness?

As for the frames: You can use 1" x 2" (20mm x 40mm) battens or 12mm plywood. Bending the sides with the butt block is not a problem. It's only 6 mm plywood. Please visit boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more infos.

What happen with the cable ties ones you start with the epoxy. You just cover them with the epoxy ? But that will make bumps .
@gewibu6 жыл бұрын
You glue the inside of the boat first and the cable ties stay in place. They should be covered by the epoxy. When it comes to the outside, the inside part should be dry and hard and the boat sticks together. You may then cut the remainings of the cable ties at the outside or gind them away when you round the edges before you attach the fiber and epoxy. Attaching the epoxy and fiber should be done in one workflow. Inside first and outside the next day or later.

What are the total costs approx? Including the wood and epoxy,etc.. and if it's not too much to ask what is the thickness of the ply?
@gewibu9 жыл бұрын
about 15.000 Peso (Philippines). Most expensive was the Epoxy. Thickness about 5-6 mm for the sides. Bottom and stern a bit stronger.

Great job! When do you remove the cable ties along the edges of the panels?
@gewibu6 жыл бұрын
Same answer as below: You glue the inside of the boat first and the cable ties stay in place. They should be covered by the epoxy. When it comes to the outside, the inside part should be dry and hard and the boat sticks together. You may then cut the remainings of the cable ties at the outside or grind them away when you round the edges before you attach the fiber and epoxy. Attaching the epoxy and fiber should be done in one workflow. Inside first and outside the next day or later.

Would something like this need a trailer or could it go on the roof
@gewibu6 жыл бұрын
It might be a little too big for the roof! However, it needs 4 people to carry it over a distance.
@fatherthomas15755 жыл бұрын
Better make longer runners on the bottom or the surf will toss you, and add some side rails about 6 inches up to keep from rolling over sideways, good build though.
@gewibu5 жыл бұрын
Yea... but the boat is not designed for rough seas. Only for flat waters and costal areas.
@stevestringham10954 жыл бұрын
those side rails are for spray guards Padre. they won't keep you from rolling over.

Did you use Marine ply or normal far eastern ?
@gewibu5 жыл бұрын
I used marine ply but you may use others as well. Painting the raw boat with 2-3 layers of epoxy makes the plywood waterproof. boatbuilder.gewibu.com/materials-to-build-a-boat.html

Hi! I was looking for simple/sturdy boat plans and this video seems perfect. I found the original plans you modified, as well as your plans, but I can't find a weight limit anywhere... What is the maximum weight you have ever loaded the boat with, and how much weight do you think the boat can hold overall? Thanks for your video, and reply!!
@gewibu5 жыл бұрын
Don't know where the limit is. I put up to 5 people inside with a max weight of about 350 kg. Thus the boat is full already. However, in the Philippines they using similar boats as transfer boats from shore to bigger boats and they load them with 10 or more people + luggage. www.alamy.com/tourists-travelling-to-malapascua-island-from-cebu-transfer-from-a-large-vessel-to-a-smaller-one-to-reach-the-island-image227289750.html

You can find the details in the plan: hvartial.kapsi.fi/wpunt/wpunt.htm For a rough working boat use 12 mm (1/2") for the bottom, 9 mm (3/8") for the sides. For a "finer" version the bottom can be 9 mm (3/8"), sides 6.5 mm (1/4").
