Every man deep down wants to possess the knowledge to build, I was fortunate to grow up around a grandfather that could and would build bout anything. He soaked the sides of his boat in water then attached them to the bottom. I think it helped with shaping the boat. That boat lasted till we were grown. "If you do it right, it will last" he would always say. Thank you.

About 10 years ago I built a piroge using similar techniques. I scarfed the 2 sheets of plywood end to end to give me a craft about 15 feet long. It could be paddled like a canoe, but I rigged it for rowing. It weighed about 50 pounds and was cartopable. I sold it about 3 years ago. I was able to complete the build over a Labor Day weekend. The painting took another week.

When you started painting I thought to myself, "He skipped filming the most tedious part...sanding". Then,when the dark paint went on, I realized you just skipped the sanding altogether. 😳😁 The great thing about projects like this is you can build it to whatever level you want. It can be a knockabout or a showpiece. You get to decide.

Absolutely Hannu's Boatyard Portuguese Dingy. Glad you credited him. I like how non boat builders speak of Popular Mechanics, as though the plywood of the 1950s is even feasible anymore. I agree with the different seating set-up with a gap for the tailbone. I thought of the Mini Ekstock but decided it was a bit boxy, though the less-tapered bow is a bit better for capacity and stability. Your little outboard should really move you...my 5 hp is easily enough. The Portuguese Dingy has great lines. Enjoy.

I currently have want of just such an example that will fit into my Mini-van and this is how I found yours. Just a couple oars will do the trick. Once again- very nice build. In the early '60s when I used to sail on cargo ships (Clan Lines) as an engineer, I purchased a kit for 12' sailboat. It was a well-known class in UK, but I do not remember its name. So the kit came with mast fully finished and a large wooden box with plywood portions already cut. We hauled it on board. The construction began on the outward voyage to South Africa. On a steel ship there are a few spare places where I could work unhindered. It was top of a cabin where I was able to do work. I would do my regular watch and then work on the boat. By the time we arrived in Cape Town, it was ready. I had the naming ceremony with a party on board. About 50 people showed up. It was apartheid then and my guests were mainly Indians and Coloured. So the police came on board to see what was happening on the British ship. Anyway, we had a great time. Sprinkled some champagne on the boat and drank the rest of it. I would drop it on the side at each port and go sailing. With British shipmates, I would land on the whites-only beach to the consternation of the beachgoers. I enjoyed the boat very much. P.S.: I immigrated to Canada went to University got Engineering Degree.

About 60 years ago I made a boat like this. The plans were in Popular Science magazine. I made an 8 foot pram out of one sheet of 1/4 inch plywood. I used 1 by 12 for the bow and stern. 1 by 2 for framing. Had a lot of fun building and using. Enjoy

I can understand the "build" portion of a project. It is satisfying to see something completed. As for boats (I've had 5) I've always looked for ones that others have given up on and refinished them. My best project was a 14 foot Gregor (welded aluminum) that sat in a backyard for over 20 years. I bought the boat, trailer and two motors for $500. I sold both motors for $300 and cleaned up the boat and trailer. Of course the new motor was $1500 but I used the boat for two years then sold it for $2500. Subscribing!

I am rebuilding my father's 45 year old fiberglass dinghy. We towed it down the Mississippi River from Oklahoma, by way of several rivers and 19 locks and dams. Nearly lost it once, but was able to retrieve it. It is a sailing vessel. It has only been sailed once. (by me at Lake Ferguson). This thing has been neglected for years, with all of the wood rotted to oblivion. I will be using plastics and glue/screws. Should be ready to sail again in a few weeks.

TGE: U just brought me back 50+ years. In the my youth I built a hydro-plane boat out of 2 sheets of plywood. Not, as complicated as yours. But, it would really scoot with a 5 hp motor, course I only weighted half what I weigh now. I think the plans were from Popular Mechanics. Thanx for the memories.

I'm in the middle of building basically the same boat. I made the transom entirely out of 3/4 ply. and the stem I had a 4x4 to use. waiting for glue to dry. I was thinking about how I was going to attach the Wales but you solved it for me. I have a little nail gun and can use the little brads for the inner rail. I'm sure I'll be referring back to this vid a few more times

Been there, done that. It needs a keel, a 1x2 strip down the middle, or less would add straight line tracking. It’d also be far better with a very lightweight power plant, maybe a tiny four stroke, or a trolling motor and lithium battery.

I'm building a small boat similar to this (without plans - easy) but I'm going to cover it with waterproof glue and canvas when it has been assembled then I will paint it with marine grade paint. If stored properly, it should last for quite a few years. The good thing about this boat is that you can carry it in a pickup or a SUV and you don't need a trailer. It's light enough that you can launch it by hand. Makes a good little fishing boat for a slow creek but I wouldn't want to get out in the middle of a large body of water where waves or someones wake might swamp you. I'm looking to put a little bit of floatation foam in mine just in case. I'm also putting a couple of strakes along the bottom to keep down damage from beaching.

I have plans i've drawn up for a similar boat but more red mbling a drift boat rather than a deep V. Sides angle out so the boat at the transom is 8" wider at the top of the transom compared to where the boat's bottom meets the transom.

I built one from those plans from Hannu’s boatyard (same website). It worked out great for a few years. I left it outside after using it in a couple different river floods and the floor started separating eventually. Where the floor connects to the sides has the most pressure on it. I also used a thicker transom than the plan called for. Nice video 👍

I sealed each and every seam with marine epoxy and then fiberglassed all of the seams with nice quality fiberglass mat. I also used void free plywood. It took tons and tons of abuse before it fell apart. It spent weeks at a time in the water. Takes a toll on little boat like this. I could of probably repaired it but burning it was also a great memory

Impressively simple methods of building the boat single handedly, very creative. I do agree with another comment that a flat or less curved bottom for the boat would provide greater stability and better tracking. Though for rowing purposes the rocker will make the boat more efficient. Awesome job very inspiring makes me want to go and make my own

This is where I got my inspiration. hvartial.kapsi.fi/dinghy1/simboii.htm It took 1 week full time to build. The Spray gun is the $10 Harbor freight gun. Its not ment to be used with latax paint but with some trial and error it works on small to medium projects. Thanks for watching.

Is 1/4" plywood strong enough?? I would add a 2nd sheet for reinforcement. Assuming you put in oarlocks, you'll need the extra strength and stiffness. If you go up to 1/2" or 5/8" it won't bend. I would also add a small keel, maybe 5" or so, to the bottom, for stability, directional fluidity, and to inhibit lateral slide in the water.

@Halibut 1, I have several decades of experience working on, and using small boats. I built two approx. 8' boats using similar techniques. For a boat this small, 1/4" plywood is almost overkill. I would use 1/4" for the bottom, and 3/16" (or metric equiv) for the sides, 3/8" for the transom (or laminate from the bottom and side material). The additional cost of marine grade plywood vs A-C exterior is worth the initial investment. This size boat is a lot more useful if it's light enough for one person to wrestle around on land. The weight of thicker than necessary materials and other excess reinforcements adds up quickly. I agree with your suggestion of an external keel, maybe a replaceable 1x2 on edge. In addition to directional stability, it would stiffen and protect the thin plywood bottom. The plywood-to-plywood joint method shown is quite good, and uses thickened epoxy to fill gaps and angles, rather than precision wood shaping skills. It's a combination of two seam styles. See also "stitch & glue" a.k.a. "tack & tape" which uses more epoxy and fiberglass, and less stick lumber. At the top of the transom, I would have made the long thin horizontal reinforcement continuous for strength, and installed the motor boards below that. The finishing details shown are more appropriate for fresh water use than salt. In my experience, absolutely all plywood needs to be protected with both fiberglass cloth and epoxy. Epoxy resin alone, even several coats with several coats of marine paint over it, eventually develops checking (hairline cracks along the grain from natural changes due to weather exposure). Personally, I'm more careful to avoid skin contact with uncured epoxy. I use gloves on both hands. As others have mentioned, check out boat building plans and techniques by Phillip Bolger, Gougeon Brothers (WEST System), Glen L. Witt and Ken Hankinson.

My dad and I built a similar boat from 2 sheets of plywood in 1960. The plans were in a Popular Mechanics magazine. We put 2 handles on the transom and a handle on the bow which was a flatter bow. I am going to use a 1967 3hp evinrude. I have not mated it to the boat yet and you could be right the transom might be too short. Well see. I can alway modify. Thanks for your comment and watching.

@@TheGarageEngineer believe it or not you might get away with about 8 seven or eight horsepower Nissan outboard they have come a long way I have an 8 horsepower that is about the size and weight of what your plan is with your three horsepower great job!

@@Larrlos Oh, woe; I hope not. Reminds me of the little boat I built when I was a kid. We launched it in the surf and I had my little sister get in it. The joints loosened, it filled with water, the sides came off . . . I learned that I should have used screws & glue instead of nails. It did actually float for almost a minute.

I didn't see any??? The side of the boat is curved a wide blade like a circular saw you couldn't get as close of a cut and would have to do a lot more router work.
