I feel ya, Jay. I married the daughter of a librarian - I read out of self defense. It looks like she has a little bit of open space for more books there, though... I gotta tell ya there are only 2 differences in the way you made this bookcase and the way we did them back at the custom cabinet shop (and charged a pretty penny for.) One was we used biscuits and glue rather than pocket holes for the case work, and the other was that we used a 1/4" thick back rather than the thicker back you went with. That's it. That's a seriously nice bookcase that should outlive all of us. Great project!

For more information and plans check out the build article: jayscustomcreations.com/?p=54445 My entire business is sponsored by YOU. That means YOU visiting my website, watching my videos, and purchasing my plans allows me to create woodworking content for a living. There are many ways to show your support but purchasing a plan is the best way to do so. Thank you.

Jay, when I watch your videos, I get a major sense of satisfaction. I love your projects, and the reason I said satisfaction earlier, is because you and I work a lot alike. When I watch you do some of the same things I do I in the shop, that makes me feel like I'm doing things right. I'd like to add, I love the way you use pocket holes, and I love your use of materials, especially pine, plywood, and poplar. I use those myself all the time. So, THANKS for the great videos.

Love the finished product, and I'm a big fan of your videos. I think I've followed you from the start and seen them all. This is the only time I have seen something that I think will probably need addressed over time: You need a center foot or two. Books are heavy. Despite the stiffening you achieve for each shelf by attaching the hardwood strip to the face, the weight of all the shelves and books is on the two outside feet, with 6' of books stacked three shelves high, all on a 3/4" piece of plywood. Over time, your bottom shelf is going to sag, with only the base moulding there to stiffen it. Since the bottom is covered by that base moulding, it would be wise to add a couple more points of contact with the floor underneath to transfer the weight to the floor more evenly, so that the long spans of horizontal plywood are less prone to sag. As I said, great project, great video. Much love.

How will the bottom shelf sag when it is connected along it's full length to the front face frame as well as the plywood back?

That is a nice looking back bookcase. when you were installing the shelves, would it have been easier to start at the top and work toward the bottom? That would let the side force from the pocket screw push the shelf against the spacer instead of away from it. You used this concept when you assembled the case itself.

How do you keep the books from sticking to the latex paint? Did you coat the latex with something afterwards? If so what? And what was the application process? Spraying? Wiping? Brushing?

Looks professionally done. And no problem of course using pocket hole joinery where appropriate since the method was used by 18th century masters such as John and Thomas Seymour (w/o a handy jig, look like they were cut with a carving gouge). Have you filled pocket holes with the angle-cut dowels? Seems like that would work fine on a painted piece.

Great build and love your channel. One thing that I am curious about and noticed that Charles Hanson mentioned it too is the fact that you used latex paint. My question is do you have any issues with books or items sticking to the shelves by using latex paint? I have always heard that you should use oil based paints for case work such as a bookcase due to the fact that oil based paints dry completely, while latex paints can take years to completely dry to where things will not stick to them. Cheers and keep you the great builds.
